The preliminary results of "AKB48 World Selection General Election"[1] was unveiled the other day, and well ... um ... I don't know what to say about my rank ... "46th place" ... yup. (laugh)

I was willing to show some results from the preliminaries this year, so I personally found myself in an awkward situation. I hope everything turns over from now. In other words, it's just the results of the first day, it's just the start!

I have to say, thank you very much for voting. And I will repeat what I said before because it's important: It's just the start!!

Same as last year, Ogiyuka (Ogino Yuka) ranked 1st in the preliminaries overwhelmingly! It's really amazing. Besides her, from NGT48, Ayakani (Tano Ayaka), Katomina (Kato Minami) and Renapon (Hasegawa Rena) entered the Senbatsu (Selection). Half of those from NGT48 who are participating in the election have ranked within the Top 100. We can sense the Niigata Tornado coming this year too. I wasn't at the theater on the announcement but it looks like everyone was very excited there. I must work harder, otherwise things can turn out being very bad ...

This year the event will be held in Nagoya and since it's the 10th anniversary of SKE48, its members -- with the lead of Matsui Jurina-san -- their fans must be very motivated, and the amount of their votes must increase much more than those of the preliminaries. And we can't forget the oversea's and other groups as well, I can't relax the guard ... I have no idea how thing will turn out at the end, but you cannot take your eyes off of the main event.

Honestly, the General Election isn't something to participate ... If I were on the viewer's side, it must be very fun ...


Since this is important, I'm going to say it once again. It's just the start!!

sorry, I didn't get what was so confusing about my reply - when it comes to to AKB, ANN abbreviation usually means "AKB48 no All Night Nippon".

what I meant by AKB losing "AKB48 no All Night Nippon" is that it feels to me that the whole directing of ANN has changed recently, and it becomes less and less "AKB no ANN" and more of a general radio show with various guests including AKB members. and it's not just about Rika being more frequent in it, there are other signs as well. it's not something new that members from other 4648 groups "hijack" ANN, special occasions like that occurred for a long time now, but I think they started to happen more frequently recently. but I don't think various geinoujins (not members) coming for several weeks straight happened before. and another thing that feels like a change in directing and "almost mocking to AKB" is how SSK - AKB's biggest event - being treated this year. inviting Ririka, who is hated by many wota, to a show before SSK and inviting hiragana keyaki instead of SSK winners (or other 48g girls who were prominent in SSK) to a show right after SSK is something that probably didn't happen before either...

yeah, all those changes might be just a temporary thing and things will get back to normal again, and I might be just overthinking it, but it's not like it's some crazy sci-fi, these changes (AKB kanmuri shows closing or slowly changing to non-kanmuri) happened before, so yeah... it might or might not happen, only time will tell, not going to argue about that. and no, I'm not pro or against those changes (if there are really any), those were simply my thoughts))

This time, it's about AKB48 World Selection General Election[1]! The outcome hasn't been announced yet at the time of writing this manuscript, but it will have been when the Weekly Playboy with this article is released. Probably at that time, I'll be relieved for having ranked in a good position and be bragging about it (... so I want to believe).

I'm writing it in the middle of the period of the General Election. And with only one week left, it's as if we have just entered in the home stretch. Moreover, I'm also fighting in a fierce battle in the election event of SHOWROOM (SR). Honestly, it's been very hard! (laugh) I'm so sleep-deprived!! (laugh)

But I want to work hard, imagining that I will get a good rank and see everyone's smile on the stage of the General Election. Perhaps it will happen that people reading this column will think: "Poor Rikachan, she didn't know yet that her result was bad ..." (laugh)

Now I can only believe in my fans! Also, I hope I can get 1st place in the SR. I'm happy that I could get even closer to my fans in this election period, because we were together for soooooooo long time in SR! (laugh) Next year, I want to spend the election period in a more relaxed manner but since I'm very competitive, I'll probably be battling in the SR again.

"Why is Nakai Rika loved?" The attempt to unravel the back side of the merciless poisonous tongue

This is a series of interviews of performers who showed remarkable success in SHOWROOM. This time, we interviewed Nakai Rika-san of NGT48, known for her "flaming" character who -- unlike an idol (?) -- doesn't mince matters.

Contrary to her lovely looks, Nakai Rika-san of NGT48 has drawn attention with her "flaming" character for addressing her sharp tongue towards fans.

On 2018's New Year's Day, she got into flames by counter attacking a commentary from an anti.

By listening her in this interview, we soon knew that it's of her nature not to mince words and to speak briskly, but it seems that "very often she ends up becoming topic unintentionally."

She says: "I just speak what I've got in mind at that instant, so I don't remember later the exact words I said," and "Even though there are antis, I will be glad if what I do serves for people to know me or if it draws attention to the group." She has a robust mentality unimaginable for a 20 years old girl.

We asked her the reason why she started SHOWROOM, her prospects as an idol, and the reason she decided to speak her mind without fearing its risks.


1. Even though I get flamed, I will be glad if it becomes topic. I believe my fans from SHOWROOM will be with me, no matter what



-- Shall we start?
Sure.

-- When we talk about Nakai Rika, soon comes the image of SHOWROOM. What do you think in this regard?
I'm happy people think so. SHOWROOM was the key for the turning point in my career. This association is so strong that when the SHOWROOM setting was showed on the stage of NGT48's solo concert last year, people didn't have doubt who would appear next: "Oh, it's Rikachan!"

-- By speaking a quite brisk speech in the SHOWROOM broadcast, you have become topic in the internet for your "flaming" character.

Well, I can only say "Thank you!" (laugh) Antis' fervent remarks become news and draw attention of people who don't know me. A single broadcast I do on SHOWROOM can yield up to three topics on the message board sites. It's pretty convenient.



-- (laugh) But, don't you afraid of the risks in speaking your mind most of the time?

Normally, people care a lot about their image, but I don't care speaking my mind. I don't mind being hated. If we don't speak clearly what we don't like, people will never understand us.

-- Have you always thought this way, even before your debut?

Well, yeah. I've always been very frank and pick up a fight if provoked too. My popularity level is already at the bottom in the first place and it can't fall any lower, so I've got nothing to lose. Also, my fans have developed immunity and they're no longer shocked by the extreme thing I say. (laugh)

-- The sharp-tongued speech has become normal, or should I say, your standard to speak. (laugh)

Yeah. Thanks to SHOWROOM, I got many hardcore fans. I used to say "Don't cheat me!" to my fans before, but now I'm quite sure that they'll follow me, no matter how much I make them crazy.

-- On the other hand, don't you get hurt because some antis' comments?

I used to get hurt before. I used to regret a lot for what I said: "Maybe I shouldn't have said that!" but all that ended up bearing fruits, so now I think "That was not bad at all," and I don't get hurt anymore.

-- So, you have become confident that you were not wrong.

You're right. I've become confident because there're people who accept me and my fans are always with me. When I hear complaints, I tend to think "Here come the outsiders bitching." Moreover, antis bothering to make a fuss of it only proves how they are interested in me. Thinking so, they're actually cute to see.


2. Whatever I used to do before, I would only get an average score. With SHOWROOM, I could finally say I had a specialty



-- I would like to ask a little more about the SHOWROOM broadcast. What was the reason why you decided to broadcast this much, in the first place?

I've never had something I could say "this is my specialty" before. Even though I could sing and dance in a satisfactory level, it was nothing close to high level. I'm the so-called "Jack of all trades, master of none." I was always in the average position within the group.

But when I received the specific explanation about SHOWROOM from my idol-manager, I thought: "Definitely, this is for me!" The girls around me were afraid to broadcast without a script telling them what to do, so there weren't so many people streaming at the beginning. I thought that was my chance and streamed more than everyone, so that I could turn SHOWROOM in my specialty.

-- Why have you thought you were good at it?

Work is my life. On my day-off, when I'm not working, I'm not better than a dead man. I want people looking at me all the time, I'm an attention seeker. With SHOWROOM, I can stream it and catch people's eyes even after theater performances or on my day-off. It suits me well.

-- Have you never thought it was tiresome?

Not much, not at all. I enjoy broadcasting. I joined NGT48 because I always loved idols, ever since I was a kid. At first, I tried to act cute like any other idol, but when you talk in a live broadcast, your true self ends up showing up. It's hard to stream for a long period of time trying to hide your true self. Thus, I decided to speak my mind, and it was when I started to get flamed. (laugh)

But I prefer this way, it's more fun, and I can answer to fans with my own words. I guess they are happier too.



-- Watching your broadcast, it definitely make us feel as if we were relaxing and talking to girl in a coffee shop. We can feel an affinity with that ambience.

I'm really happy to hear it. (The reporter is a woman) Actually, I think this is very important. At first, there was a part of me thinking it was important to increase the amount of male fans, but I changed my plans because I wanted to get female fans as well, "a broadcast with a girls' talk." So, what you noticed is right.

-- Thank you. (laugh) Speaking of it, has the amount of female fans increased?

Considerably. They say "It's refreshing to see you saying what we would like to say." I can have a close conversation with the girls, as if I were talking to my own family at home.


By drawing people's attention, I want to make them interested in idols. And I want to be able to earn more money too (laugh)



-- What has changed, work-wise and for yourself, after you started getting attention with your "flaming" character?

Work has changed drastically. My SHOWROOM was considered interesting and people started to talk about it. I have (already) been chosen to integrate Senbatsu (AKB48's Selection) but I started to be called to appear in a lot of TV shows.

In the past, I was known to be a fisher (an idol who attracts fans with cute behavior and fan service) and I used to act cute quite a lot, but I didn't get much work. I aimed to be an "idol-ish idol" but I realized that I would draw more attention if I weren't a standard idol, then I changed.

-- Were there any changes in your activities as an idol too?

I still want to make an idol-ish performance on the stage, so I act cute there, but the MCs are much easier, because now I don't mince words and speak my mind.



-- You have said that "you became an idol because you like idols", but do you have a specific goal or career prospects now that you became an actual idol and got attention?

Idols can cheer people up with their singing and dance, something I always thought amazing. In this way, this feeling of willing to "deliver dreams" to people hasn't changed even now. However, I pretty much have distanced myself from the image of an idol I had at the beginning. (laugh)

I want to be a spice-like presence different from the other members in the AKB48 Group. I want to draw the attention of people who have no interest in the group or in idols at all. I want people of the whole country to get interested in the group.

-- You are thinking about the group!

And of course, I want to be famous too, and to be able to earn money on my own.

-- (laugh) Okay, you want to earn money, right?

Yeah, I want to earn money with my own hands and expand my activities outside the frame of idols.

-- Is there someone -- idol or not -- you are aiming at or want to be like?

Nope. (straightforward)

-- You don't do that on purpose?

Oh yeah. If you establish someone as you goal, you will end up just being a copy of that person. I want to be who I am. There're Sashihara Rino-san and SHEILA-san*, they are quick-witted and I always think their ability to reply to the comments very impressive. In such a meaning, I try to learn from them by watching the TV shows they are in, but I avoid to "set them as my goal".

(*) Who's SHEILA? Didn't she mean SHELLY instead?


We only live once. In order to make your dream come true, we have to enjoy it while you can.



-- By talking to you, I found you have a strong will for someone as young as 20, but do you have confidence in yourself?

Yes, I have. I think you can shine when you've got confidence and it's always important to be confident when you tell people something. I was able to work hard on SHOWROOM because I was confident from the start. In the TV shows, when I go to a recording, I try not to research about the participants beforehand. This way I can act myself without getting nervous. I look after their information afterwards and many times I got shocked how great people I was with. (laugh)

-- I guess it's important to have confidence in everything we do.

I was also confident that "I could reply in a funny way" to the commentaries of the SHOWROOM broadcast.

-- I have already asked you of your prospects, but do you have something you want to accomplish on SHOWROOM?

I want to appear on a commercial of SHOWROOM! That's my dream right now. I was really able to experience many things thanks to SHOWROOM and I don't want to do anything that could blacken its name. I'll do my best for that.



-- Thank you for your words. How do you define SHOWROOM for you in a few words?

There're so many things that I couldn't put it into only few words, but "it was the starting point for me to become what I am now". It has become my specialty. It's got also a sense of a warm home, it's a part of my life. If I get a job from SHOWROOM, I can do it with no worries.

-- Nakai-san, you have realized one dream after another with the SHOWROOM. Please, leave some advice to everyone who is pursuing their dreams.

I'm not in a position to give anyone advice, but I think it's extremely important to broadcast yourselves. Each broadcast gives people lots of information. The more you broadcast the more people will watch you. No effort is useless.

There are a lot of people who realized their dreams making use of SHOWROOM. It's a tool fun to use, with gifts and statistics you can easily understand. We only live once, we must make an effort for our dreams, enjoy every moment we can, without giving up.

-- Strong words. At last, leave a message to your fans!

I really wouldn't be where I am if there wasn't SHOWROOM. I feel a sense of security because of all those people in SHOWROOM. I want my fans to continue watching me and I will also do as much as I can to meet their expectations. So please, keep supporting me. And don't you ever think in cheat SHOWROOM with another video broadcast app!

But she has said she won't participate next year if they don't change the rules (possibly by imposing a limit of broadcasting time per day), as she also thinks it's unfair to young members who attend school, who have a limited time to compete with the older members.
