@Neve - Thank you for the translation! It brings a new perspective to how things go as a fan. The part of the newer members worrying about AKB losing popularity (holes on the seating, people not actually paying attention to the mini concerts, etc.) is a really interesting counterpoint to the idea of "newer members just riding on AKB's popularity brought about by the old members". I think it really shows how, sometimes painfully, aware these girls are about the dynamics in the group. The part about senbatsu members half filled with sister groups and feeling it's because they're not "strong" enough is a bit frustrating to me because it's definitely not all their fault.

It worries me about the future, too. It feels like the old members are graduating all at once, and the new members are being pushed to develop too fast to take their places when they aren't ready. Poor Mako having to worry that she's not in the 16-member senbatsu, when she only joined the group two-and-a-half years ago.

 

Safe to see she's growing fast.

 

^ Oh, I didn't notice that. Well, I saw the photo on her Google+ a little while ago, though. Pretty hot - definitely not my normal image of her!
The article isn't very interesting, though. Like most news articles, it's mostly padding. They speculate that it's from a gravure shoot for a magazine, and it says (about five times) that when she put it up, her male fans went crazy. They have a couple of examples of comments on the post, "I really like Kojimako recently, she's becoming so cute." That kind of thing. The only one that surprised me was this one:「クリームがはみ出すぞ」I might be mistranslating, but "I'm about to come!" Really!? They printed that in the news!? Haha. At the end, it just says some stuff about her election rank, and that she's expected to rise up a lot this year.

 

@Neve Thanks a lot for the interview translation! That was so interesting to read.

I think it's not the first time Mako has been worried for AKB... Ever since Yuko's graduation announcement (one year ago) she started to talk about AKB's future. Even if she's a new gen, she already thinks so much and speaks so well too. I love the way she thinks! It's true that many fans assume that new gens just get it easy because they join a group who's already at the top so they have nothing to worry about, but people forget that when old gens are leaving, who knows what will happen to the group... New gens have lots of things to worry about, especially in situations like Mako said (how they don't have enough fans attending events when there's only new gens). I hope she (and the rest of new gens) will take all this in a positive way, and use it to encourage themselves to improve their popularity, skills, etc. in order to have their own big fandoms and keep AKB at the top in the future too.

Btw I noticed Mako talks a lot about Tentoumu Chu!, I think it's because she's now in team K, she's far from her same gen friends, she probably miss the times when they promoted in TTMC together, and she really doesn't want the subunit to disband... They got their own songs already, but didn't have an official debut... I hope management won't give up on the subunit, and this year they can have their official debut (and also a new Tv show!).

Oh also, I'm happy Mako got a role in Maji 4! I already expected that she would be selected for the drama ^-^
It's even better that she has a combi with Naanya, since they're both my favs from new gens. wHiroko and now Kamisori & Zombie!

Btw at the beginning of the interview, it says they did an interview before too, related to AKB49 with Mako and Naanya, is there any translation of that? Because I love these two together. and I love the AKB49 friendships. I'm glad AKB49 musical will be back this year! I hope they release it in DVD too!

And although I'm not really into gravure, but actually I really love that picture of Mako @paman22 She looks so adorable! I love her expression!

 

It was like I was going through a tumblr run; I was like "let's see what Makotin's up to". I see one of her shoots where she was wearing white. Then I was like when in the hell... Oh welp, she is a Kojima after all.

 

For a long time now, there has been a lot of talk about a wave of graduations coming but so far, from senbatsu only Acchan, Mariko, Tomochin, Sayaka and Yuko graduated. That's five girls in total.

Here and there I read that juniors aren't ready yet. Seniors have to stay on because juniors aren't ready yet or something along those lines.

Well Acchan, Mariko, Tomochin, Sayaka and Yuko didn't have any seniors to depend on either. Nobody warned Takamina a full year in advance that she will have to lead the group. Sometimes I think everyone including management thinks AKB48 juniors are a bunch of helpless little babies.

They are not helpless. They want to take over the baton and they want to do it rather sooner than later. Kojimako wants to be center. Tano wants to be captain. Yui wants to be general manager for a long time now. She is going to have to wait for another year. For as long as I am following her, Kojimako is talking about how seniors are graduating and juniors want to step up. And they are stepping up. But they are not getting the opportunities to make their dreams come true.

Instead management is clogging half of senbatsu with sister group members. Disbanding Tentoumuchu. Disbanding team 4. For the Majisuka lead they use a sister group member and a 9th generation member. The 9th generation has been around since 2009. They are not exactly juniors anymore.

I'm sorry - I didn't mean to sound like I was insulting the later generation girls

For dedicated fans, the members you mentioned are a small part of the group as a whole. But for most normal people in Japan who aren't serious wota, those people are still the ones that everyone knows. One of the things that makes AKB great is that they succeeded not only as a wota-oriented idol band, but also as a mainstream pop band. If you talk to just ordinary people over here, everyone knows Acchan, Yuko and Takamina, but most people have never heard of Kojimako (or even modern senbatsu like Yuihan). I think that's where the worry comes from for those of us who live here.

It's not that I think they aren't capable. On the contrary, these days almost all the members I think are really interesting and follow are late generation members. They've become so awesome in such a short time. Just that you can't become famous overnight. As Kojimako herself mentioned in the interview, they had a pretty bad experience at Kyocera Dome. If you'd put Acchan and Yuko in that dome, I'm guessing things would've been different.

 

I know you were not being insulting at all. All of your arguments are very reasonable. I fully agree.

Okada: I was surprised when I heard that Mako was going to Team K by herself. What I imagine was that I’d go to A, Miki would stay in 4 and Mako would go to B. Or alternatively, they’d keep the three of us together.

Nishino: It feels like she’s become more adult since she went to K. She has a different atmosphere. Even her clothes are more adult.

Okada: It definitely tells us how much she’s grown. She said that we’re doing our best in Team 4, so she also had to do her best in Team K.

Nishino: But when the three of us are together, we still get really noisy, so nothing’s really changed [laughs].

^ I thought all 3 would move out of Team 4 and in A, K, and B. I predicted Mako would actually go to Team K though. It seems quite obvious that most would see her go to A or B, but Team K was very much in decline and management likes to throw surprises.

Makotin was so adorable in the Kouhaku warm-up. The event was boring me up until that point.
