With Follower’s tweet 『Karen-chan is graduating⁉︎』as guide for the time being, we googled the article. That article was… 「AKB48’s Iwata Karen Announced Graduation」and the reason for the graduation was 「Aimed to be a stage actress」

We are sorry for the fans, but we are not interested in Idols, to be honest our usual reactions end with 『Hmm』. But, something caught our attention. 『Stage Play』keyword of course, but the name 『Iwata Karen』… This name, somehow really caught our attention that it cannot got away from our head.

Since 「Iwata Karen」cannot got away from our head, for the time being we searched for her profile and checked her videos. By the way, the first one we saw was the “Mandoku” (LOL). Our impression, she’s a little bit different kind of Idol. Because of musical experience, especially having lessons history since childhood, we tried to talk to the producers about her.

02 August 2016

Producers also checked her videos and profile, 「She’s interesting, looks good, isn’t she? Let’s ask about her (schedule)」. And then under the consent of Total Producer Kuroiwa, we contacted AKB’s side. As the story rapidly progressed, casting as Maria was decided.

I'm really glad to know that Karen's hardworks all these time are finally paid off nicely. As expected, hardworks are never wasted.

本日は、仙台放送さんの『生中継!第47回仙台七夕花火祭　～ミルキーウェイ・ファンタジー!2016～』に出演させて頂きました〜！
Today, I was allowed to appear on Sendai Television’s program 『Live Broadcast! 47th Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival　～Milky Way Fantasy! 2016～』

仙台七夕祭りは全国的にも有名で、商店街に吹き流しがたくさん並んだり、花火も大迫力な、仙台の一大イベントなんです！
私も小さい頃から毎年お祭り行ってました♪
でも上京してからは1度もこの時期に帰れていなかったので、実に6年ぶりの仙台七夕祭りでした！
久しぶりにみた花火、相変わらず綺麗だったな〜！
Sendai Tanabata Festival is also famous nationally, it is lined up along the shopping district, the fireworks are also great, it is really a big event in Sendai!
I also went to the festival every year when I was little ♪
But since I was in the capital I cannot return even once, this was actually my first Sendai Tanabata Festival after six years!
It’s been a long time since I saw the fireworks, it is still pretty as usual~!

私はスタジオからの出演だったのですが、気分はすっかりお祭り気分！浴衣を着付けして頂きました♡
I was participating in the studio, but my mood is quite a festival mood! I wore a yukata ♡


なんとこの浴衣を着付けしてくれた方、私が3歳の時からお世話になっている方で。
七五三は全部着付けて頂いたんです！
約10年ぶりにお会いして、大きくなったね〜と涙ぐまれました…
Somehow while wearing this yukata, I felt like my 3 years old self.
I have worn yukata in every Shichigosan!
It’s been 10 years since we’ve met, I’ve grown up~ then I was moved to tears…


七五三と言えば、伝説のこの写真……

『Danganronpa』 has just reached its final stage, yet another stage play has been decided. This time is musical, moreover it’s a main role!

「The work is『Maria and Princess the Green』, I will play the main character Maria」

What kind of girl is Maria?

「She’s working hard at a local theatre company with a dream of becoming a musical actress. But, because her mother was sick, she’s wavered from her chance to study abroad in Broadway. She always talked about her problems with The Green Princess of her imagination, but that world and reality are linked… it was that kind of story. Because it’s The Musical of “Life”, it is the fantastic entertainment with big themes like how great it is to live and how important is the nature」

The work’s involving many child actors to appear, the musical series is like a gateway to success for the children who aimed to be actors.

「That’s right. Actually when I was a child, I have auditioned for this musical. But I failed the second one (LOL). That’s why when seeing the child actors’ hardworks, I painfully remembered my past self. Now I feel like a parent (LOL)」

You’ve been having a dream to be a musical actress since you were a child, finally you are able to stand on the stage as the main role. Now, how do you feel?

「I feel really emotional about it, but I think that this is the first step. To connect from this to the next is important. Stage play for me is something that I have done since I was a child, it’s now a part of my life. That’s why I cannot imagine if I cannot stand on the stage, but not only being tied there, I think I would like to challenge many things. Now I’m desperately trying to regain my sense of song for the musical. Because『Danganronpa』is a 2.5 dimension stage play so no singing and dancing」

First time working as the chairman*, how do you want it to go?

(* note: I think the ‘chairman’ here means ‘lead role’)

「In stage play because during both practice and performance period we meet each other face-to-face, the atmosphere of the company is really important. In『Danganronpa』, the chairman Hongo Kanata-san delivered good mood to his surroundings, he was able to make a good atmosphere. It was different from his usual image, I was really surprised, I was allowed to learn from him. Taking advantage of what I’ve learned there, I want to make a good company. But as for now, I can only bring sweets to the children (LOL)」

舞台稽古初日でした〜〜
It was the first day of dress rehearsal~~

メイクして、衣装を着て、
マイクを付けて、、、今までと違う分、戸惑いもありますが、なんかいよいよ始まるんだなって感じがして、より一層気合いが入った舞台稽古でした^ ^
Applying make up, wearing the outfit,
Using the microphone,,, It’s a different thing from before, I was confused, but somehow I had the feeling like it’s finally started, more spirits came to me in this dress rehearsal ^ ^

舞台美術、セットも幻想的で、、見とれてしまった！
緑の星の雰囲気が、見事に表現されていました……

明日が終われば、いよいよゲネプロです。1日が終わるのが早すぎる笑

- She'll be participating in Miyashita Yuya's birthday show. He's her co-star in Danganronpa The Stage.

- So it seems that there hasn't been much news about Karen's activities except for Maria. Looking forward for more announcement later on!

 

She did mention like a million years ago that she won't dye her hair until she graduates.

 

She did mention in her blog post that she's wondering when will she actually change her hair colour for real, and she said that perhaps it might be for a role. Talking about seriousness just like her senpais and a certain serious kouhai

 

[News Flash]

Karen is one of the cast in this program "Sakura -Japan In the Box-", produced by Meijiza along with Nito Moeno & Ishida Haruka. I guess it's some kind of stage performance? Perhaps anyone can give more information about this?

大阪はダンガンロンパぶりだったので、約1ヶ月ぶりでしたが、
初主演舞台で大好きな大阪に来られたこと、個人的には凄く嬉しかったです(*^^*)

It’s been since Danganronpa that I’ve been to Osaka, around 1 month ago, but it’s the first time I’m in Osaka as the main role of stage play, personally I was happy (*^^*)

『マリアと緑のプリンセス』は、早いもので、全11公演中9公演が終了しました。あと2公演
『Maria and Princess the Green』, it’s fast, from all 11 performances, 9 performances has ended. Two more performances left

残すところ来月の神奈川公演のみとなりましたが、ここから丸1ヶ月空いてしまうので、色々忘れないように(^_^、気を抜かずにがんばります！
All that’s left is Kanagawa performances next month, but one month from now I’ll be free, I hope I will not forget various things (*about the performance) (^_^, I will work hard to stay sharp!

24時間テレビ、無事に終了しました〜！
24 hour TV, has ended safely~!

今回私は宮城テレビさんのみの出演でしたが、長年にわたって続いてきた歴史ある「24時間テレビ」に、少しでも携われたこと、本当に光栄です
昨日、今日と勾当台公園に会いに来て下さったすべての方に、ありがとう
事務所の方針もあり、基本的にサインや写真はお断りしているのですが、それをちゃんと事前にお知らせしていなかったから、ガッカリさせちゃった方はごめんなさいでした私も心が苦しいけれど、ご理解頂ければ幸いです。
This time I was allowed to appear in Miyagi TV only, but for 「24 hour TV」that has a long following history, even though just a little, I was really honoured.
Yesterday, and today, for those who came to see us at Kotodai Park, thank you.
There’s a policy from my agency, so I had to refuse signing and photos, but because I didn’t inform it in advance, for those who are disappointed, I’m really sorry, it really hurts, but I hope you understand.

勾当台公園も屋台やたくさんのお客様でいっぱいで、また賑わいが戻ってきた故郷の姿を見ることができて、なんだか胸が熱くなりました。
Kotodai Park is also full of stalls and a lot of customers, and to be able to see my hometown is crowded by people when I got back here, somehow I was fired up.

レポーターとしてはまだまだ未熟すぎる私を、宮城テレビアナウンサーの皆様やオコチャさん、菊地亜美さんなどがたくさん助けてくださって、本当に感謝のみです
もっともっと勉強して、知名度上げて、もしまた呼んで頂いた折には、更に仙台を盛り上げられるように頑張ります！！

I just have known that AKB have a wonderful member like Karen for just a hour. It means that 2 hours ago, i have no idea who she is. I noticed when i watch akbingo and right away i was impressed by her. Karen is really pretty, a little crazy and a good voice, too. I went to google and sadly, she annouced graduated in the last january. So sad and pity that i can watch her in akb anymore. I really want to see this girl grow up and success. But i wonder, how could she have not ranked in all ssk? With all i have said, she could rank in future girls or even senbatsu. The question is why?

1- The way that AKS pushed back in 2011/2012 was so wrong that in one point the amount of fans and antis she had was THE SAME... luckily, as the years passed, that issue settle a bit... but...

2- As some couple of years one guy asked in 2ch, Karen was liked by the fans... as 2oshi... most of people liked, but not enough to spent votes on her...

 

Just as @Crossheart said already, let me add some points and fun fact about Karen (?):

- AKS are pushing her really hard in her early career, which is understandable because Tohoku earthquake, so she was made a poster girl, which resulting fans and antis.

- Yet people cannot deny she actually have talents, that's why people liked her.

- Note that in an interview, she said that she doesn't want to be an idol. She went to AKB because she saw Takamina in a variety show.

- During her audition, while others said their motivation is to be center and something similar, Karen said: "I want to stand on Broadway".

- As AKB is usually a place to develop from 0 to something, Karen was not a 0 at all. She already experienced with stage play, hence her acting and singing are already good.

- Perhaps that's why people saw Karen more like an entertainer than a Idol.

- People in Japan like gravure (duh) and Karen almost never did gravure. At some point gravure helps in popularity (which I don't like, IMO)

- While she wasn't able to rank in sousenkyou, we can see how big her fans are in RH 2015, where "Kono Namida wo Kimi ni Sasagu" ranked 20th out of 1035 song at that time. And Sailor Zombie still managed to rank in RH 2016. Pretty damn sure that was mostly because of Karen fans.

- While her push was fading away back then, she's still recognised by management (mostly for Charity events) and given spotlight there. Karen's wish back in AKB is to bring AKB back to her hometown to perform there. A wish that management fulfilled back in the final Zenkoku Tour in Sendai, Miyagi, with Karen as the spotlight.

- She was also loved by members. If you watched Karen's Graduation Performance, almost every members participating cried (heck, even Annin cried, which surprised me), or had a very teary eyes.

SAKURA in Meijiza

明治座で絶賛公演中の、「SAKURA」を観てきました！(*^^*)
I have come to watch 「SAKURA」, the critically acclaimed performance in Meijiza (*^^*)

プロジェクションマッピングや和楽器の音色、すべてが美しくて、世界観に引き込まれ、あっと言う間の60分でした。
The quality of projection mapping and traditional Japanese musical instrument, everything is beautiful, the view of the world is drawn, what a fast 60 minutes.

日本人として、絶対に一度は観た方がいい作品！
As a Japanese, it is a great work that people need to see at least once!

そしてお客様には海外の方も多く、日本の美が、世界中に伝わって行くようで、とても嬉しく感じました^ ^
And there are so many customers from other countries, the Japanese beauty is transmitted to all over the world, I felt very happy ^ ^

いやぁ、改めて日本に生まれてよかったと思える作品だったなあ。素晴らしかった。

Following Maria, she got herself jobs in Sakura Meijiza and main role yet again in Dubbing Opera "Dear Sir, Do You Know Vocaloid?". Her character is a high school student who is actually a Vocalo-P known as Parco. It is said that this dubbing opera is a mix of dubbing, acting, and singing. A new start, from the ground of Miyagi. With Iwata Karen-san to see Sendai now.

Coming back to support Tohoku.

「 If there was no earthquake, I wouldn’t be like this now. When I think so, it’s somewhat a strange feeling」

The sunlight of summer is squinting eyes, said the former AKB48, Iwata Karen-san, who is currently active as an actress. This year, 1, 2 times fighting heat a day, she went to Miyagino-ku and Wakabayashi-ku in the coast of Sendai.

When the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, Iwata-san was in 6th grade. With the dream of becoming a talent, she’s in the middle of advancing to the next round of AKB48 Audition.

「I was troubled because I wondered, is it okay to do this? However, people around me said because it is now I should do it, they are supporting me. I also thought that If I became Idol, perhaps there is something that I can do, so I decided to come to Tokyo」

Iwata-san’s Idol activity was partially related to Tohoku.

「What I remembered, was the first time I sang in the disaster-struck area. Even though they were happy, somehow it felt lonely…. What I can do at that time is just to make them smile. I thought I wanted Tohoku to revive and to be strong quickly」

Junior High School, the susceptible period of high school, the scar left was still fresh from disaster-struck area visit, did she feel the burden of it?

「 I didn’t think of that heavily, not even once」

Albeit short, she answered it clearly.

「 I’m from Miyagi, but now, where I’m standing, all of Tohoku feels like my hometown. When I heard good news about Tohoku, I am as happy to hear that as I would be if it were about myself. Everyone in my hometown is working hard, I cannot give up, I feel like I’ll also work hard」

Daily life of regenerating each of the area.

The first visit of the day is Sendai 3.11 Memorial Community Center. The concept of『A place where history,「Records」of the disaster and 「Memories」 of every person intersected』, diorama, illustration map are displayed. While looking at the diorama 「I remember this neighbourhood well. I came here for sea bathing when I was small」as the day narrowed.

Next is to the south of Gamou area. Verdant rice fields, crowded shops. The view from the car’s window is common, but this area was struck by tsunami before.

「Every time I come it has changed little by little. I’m glad on the other hand, I think there are people who are influenced by 3.11, it’s a painful feeling」

South Gamou, a little less than 200 households are living there.

「 The coast of Sendai is the area of massive relocation, and also the area of local reconstruction. South Gamou is the latter. Residents have done workshops for more than 60 times, they made a liveable town on their own」as spoken, after the earthquake, by Sakakibara Susumu-san, who is supporting the town development for the revival of the coast of Sendai.

South Gamou’s meeting place, is the building where the residents’ feelings are able to be gathered.

「I wanted a place just like the old countryside where easiness gathered, the residents are joining for the layout. This land is surrounded by trees, igune* regeneration project has also started, little by little, life will be regenerated」

(*note: Igune is a stand of trees planted to enclose a farmhouse, and you find them on the plains of Northeastern Japan.)

The last place to go is Arahama Elementary School, where it was the remains of the earthquake and was decided to be preserved. The classroom that have been washed away by the tsunami, was just left as it is like the time has stopped.

「The people of my same generation, there are some of them who gave up their dream because of the disaster. Luckily for me, I received the mission from the people in the disaster-struck area to dispatch to all around the country 」

Reflecting through every words as she speaks, Iwata Karen, graduated from AKB48 March this year. Now on the road of actress, she’s beginning to proceed step by step.

「I’ll work harder, become famous, and give my spirit to everyone. I think I want to tell a lot of people about Tohoku」

So as we can see, she is still active in visiting Tohoku areas as well.

 

I got it now, thanks you guys so much. Sorry but I think she lack of something that others in senbatsu have. And most people will like her because of her talents, but it's not enough. So pity for her...

 

It's all in the past now, but I'm glad you like her because of her talent, too.

I agree that most people like her because she got talents. Her talents will bring her to places, I'm pretty sure of it.

Like she said from a long time ago: "Great effort may not always be rewarded. If that’s the case then, until you get rewarded, keep it coming!"

Well, certainly not that rewarded back in AKB, but look at her now. Her great effort has rewarder her with a main role in stage play. Works keep coming to her one after another. It's more like, she keeps herself busy with work, and she's enjoying herself. That's awesome.
