Macharin has been sick for the past few days... :cold:
Despite that, she's still doing her daily showroom streams, though today, she isn't speaking at all and instead communicating by writing on a sign board. My respect and admiration for her grows each day, she's definitely one of my oshi.:inlove:
(She is really beautiful as well :fear:)

    I hope she'll get better soon.:cold:

I've just come across a lengthy article about Macharin which was published today in Business Weekly in Taiwan:

    http://www.businessweekly.com.tw/article.aspx?id=21794&type=Blog

Google Translate seems to work better for me with Mandarin than with Japanese. The article would appear to be about her fast rise in AKB48 (the 'variety show' mentioned is presumably AKBINGO) and her selection for the next single.

I did a rough translation. Putting it in spoiler text since it's a little long.

When the Taiwan Media has forgotten about Ma Jia Ling, why should you notice her hard work more?

From not knowing Japanese, with average Talent, to becoming the first foreigner in AKB48 history to enter the ‘First String’! The inspirational story of the Taiwanese girl Ma Jia Ling

    2018.01.26

20th January, most of the students at Shih Chien University would have just ended their troublesome end of year exams and reports, and are beginning to enjoy their one month winter holiday; and on that night, a girl who used to be a student at Shih Chien, appeared on the News section of various Japanese media.

If she had chosen to stay in Taiwan that year, she would still be in her third year of university, and might be planning her holiday trip itinerary, just like the other students. However, she chose to end her studies two years ago, transferring to Japan to challenge herself. Her name is Ma Jia Ling, the Taiwanese member in the Japanese idol group AKB48, during the evening concert on 20th January, she was announced by the agency as one of the ‘Senbatsu members’ of the new Single, becoming the first foreign Senbatsu member in the 10 plus years of AKB48 history.

Two years ago, other than herself and her small group of supporters, no one believed that she had any chance of winning. In a situation where she lacked favourable conditions and resources, how did she turn this around?

Many people in Taiwan have heard of AKB48, but the impression they have is probably limited to ‘a group with many people’. It is true that they are the idol group with the most members in the world: including all the related groups with ‘48’ in their name, there are currently around 320 members, and the‘AKB48 Senbatsu members’, who stand at the top, normally number at slightly more than 20 members.

And because there are so many monks and too little gruel, at least 80% of the ‘48’ group members have never been included in the AKB48 Single Senbatsu list. This is similar to the American Baseball Major League, the top most tier is only made up to 25 people, but the number of players who have signed a contract at various levels could number 200-300 people. Therefore, for Ma Jia Ling to obtain an AKB48 Senbatsu slot, is just as glorious as a baseball player ‘rising up to the Major League’.

The more surprising thing is, Ma Jia Ling only spent two years to climb to this position, it might not be the fastest, but this is already much faster than most members. Does she actually possess any especially advantageous conditions?

It was the opposite, other than an appearance which can be considered cute, the her two years ago, was weaker than many other members in terms of her Japanese ability, singing ability, dance ability and various other areas. The more problematic issue was her age: the average age of the new joiners of AKB48 kept decreasing over time, and more than half of them are middle schoolers, Ma Jia Ling may be in first year of university when she entered the group, but it was already at the age where many AKB48 members began to think about leaving the group.

She was beset with crisis, but as the only AKB48 Taiwan research student (similar to a trainee status in Korean idol groups) who was chosen to go to Japan to develop, she still hardened her resolve and accepted the challenge. Her performance during her first year was lacklustre, and she had cried in front of the camera; and the AKB48 management did not seem willing to invest too much in her.

However, since 2017, she found her direction. When many members became less and less motivated to conduct live streams, Ma Jia Ling was determined to do live streams every day, and all of them were over one hour. Her hard work accumulated into popularity, and she gradually pushed to the forefront amongst the members.

Perhaps her fluency in Japanese continued to improve as she continued to stream, the management started to allow her to appear in the AKB48 exclusive television show. In this show, 20-30 members will appear in every episode, however some people might not get any screen time, and disappear the next time. During Ma Jia Ling’s first appearance, she appeared with the character of ‘the foreigner who specialised in learning weird Japanese’, thinking of ways to say a few sentences of ‘Japanese language which would not be spoken by a normal Japanese person’ in order to grab some screen time.

In order to avoid getting dependent on ‘One shot gags’ and losing favour when it was no longer fresh, she continued to improve their conversational ability, and in a Japanese variety show where she needed to react quickly and be the responder, her high level of adaptability and versatility finally got acknowledged by the hosts and production team, and not only did she become a ‘fixed guest’ in the second half of 2017, she received the annual best variety performance award for the show.

She is an idol, yet she took a huge detour, avoiding her weakness in singing and dancing, finding a path using her Japanese conversational ability where she was not expected to do well, and in doing so, not only did she build up her fanbase, she strove hard to dispel the bad image of ‘being a transfer student who would immediately return to Taiwan’ and ‘she’s will only be a Japan for a while’.

There were some results, but she did not have much time left. As she celebrated her ‘fifth 17th birthday’, her supporters began to ask, how far, can she still go?

Unexpectedly, the good news came quickly: Ma Jia Long was chosen as one of the 27 members in the new Single. As the large screen at the concert began to announce the names of the selected members, Ma Jia Ling received the loudest ‘cheers’ at the venue, most of them were congratulations and acknowledgement, but there were also people who felt shocked at the mangement’s ‘abnormal selection’.

Part of these critics felt that she got selected through the ‘unjust path’ (gags and live streams), and not fitting of an orthodox idol. However, if being funny at shows and doing live streams was really that easy, then why did so few of the other 200 plus members fail to reap the same results as her? And she achieved this with a severe disadvantage in language ability.

Of course, ‘Senbatsu member’ was a type of acknowledgement, but also a challenge. Can Ma Jia Ling prove that she is really qualified as an orthodox singing and dancing idol during this promotional period two months, and stay in the ‘Major League’ name list in the next Single? This would be her most important task at hand.

Her entrance into Senbatsu did not gain much attention in Taiwan, but it would worth it for the young people in Taiwan to spend time understanding her hard work during these two years. I am not asking everyone to jump out of their comfort zone and make a living in other countries, but to think about, when in a situation where all the conditions are not favourable, how should you break out of it.

Perhaps, it might be in an area where all the strong players cannot be bothered to invest in?

Thanks for the translation, that was a great read. I'm a newcomer fan to idol groups in general, but instead of the many regular senbatsu members, it is Macharin who really caught my attention (among a few others), seeing her daily showroom streams and listening to her, coming to gradually see how much of a hard worker she is. I'm bad at saying this kind of things, but well... I want to see her continuing to climb much higher, reaching ever greater heights.:)

Just to be clear, her "fifth 17th birthday"「第5次的17歲生日」 is a joking way of talking about turning 21 (just like some American women can be "29 years old" for a decade or more.) I wasn't sure, so double checked with a friend from Taiwan.

    ^^^Thanks for the translation.

In a way, it's good that most Taiwanese don't know about her. It means she gets no special foreign support and her nationality doesn't matter. She is like any other 48G girl working to get to the top.:approve:

I'll repost this video because I think many missed it, but she talks about being selected and sheds a lot of happy tears. It was really touching.

Thanks for the translation! She certainly has come a long way. I was reminded of her first appearance during Request Hour (?) while reading this and how she was trying her best with the Japanese she was just learning and performing Heavy Rotation solo.

Again, I'm really happy for her and I do hope this isn't just a one and done for senbatsu appearances.

@mittens_220 Thanks also from me for the translation! After Mayuyu graduated I was expecting either Yukirin or Seichan to become my favourite member in Team B but it's actually turned out to be Macharin. She appeals to me so much in her talent, personality and appearance. I'm happy for her too in making the senbatsu for the 51st single and I hope she'll have a good ranking in the SSK this year.

Macharin is indeed a hardworking girl, language barrier /being from Taiwan/ people seeing her as another girl that wouldnt last long, all this negativity makes her to work hard and that hardwork pays off, i will be looking forward for her future appearances and live shows.

I think calling her "international member" when she sees herself as just another regular member also motivates her to work hard.
