Even though British English is natural to me I do try and use the singular verb forms with collective nouns as I think generally it's easier to understand but sometimes I do forget and use the plural. I don't think that there should necessarily be a "no British English" rule in the wiki or the forum as long as the meaning is clear. For example, I always use 'soccer' rather than 'football' and 'vacation' rather than 'holiday' when posting on Stage48 but I generally use British spellings of words like 'rumour' and 'metre'. (but I always use 'theater' and 'center' in the wiki)

I speak British English and wasn't aware of this difference. I try to use American English on the wiki; not because there's a rule against BE but just because it's what's being used more commonly internationally, and also AKB48 uses AE. See how they spell Ne mo Ha mo Rumor, not rumour.

While chatting on the forum, I think it shouldn't make any difference whatsoever. In my posts on here, I frequently use British spelling, but I think for the wiki, consistency would be good.

That being said, if there are inconsistency due to this difference, I'm happy with it being pointed out and adjusted to an American standard.

The following paragraph is taken from http://www.english-for-students.com/plural-and-every.html and I think it summarizes the rule on collective nouns adequately:
"The collective noun is singular when it denotes one undivided whole, but when it refers to a number of different individuals it becomes a plural noun and it is called a noun of multitude."

I believe that the difference between these two instances of 'team' is less about following British or American English but more on how the word 'team' is used.

"Usually, this team contain 47 members from every prefectures." refers to 'team' as, for a lack of better word, a 'container of people'. It is focused on the unit, not the people in the unit. Therefore, I believe that 'team' is considered singular.

"The team have finished the project." refers to the team as a group of individuals. 'The team' is used here as a way to not have to list each individual member of said group. For example, you can rephrase it as "Jurina, Rena, and Churi have finished the project." therefore making 'team' plural.

In contrast, you can't do that same replacement with the former use of 'team'. "Hiichan, Yuiyui, Odaeri, etc. contain 47 members from every prefecture." doesn't make much sense.

On another note, I also agree with "every prefecture" without an s.

I'm really not sure why you quoted this. Both the collective noun page and the American and British English grammatical differences page make it pretty clear that this doesn't apply in all cases, nor randomly, nor especially in this case.

Clearly the subject of "contain" in this sense must be the body as a whole, not the individuals within. Thus it must always take the singular form. (Obviously there are other senses of contain.)

(Also I don't think this rule is absent from AmE even if we tend to err on the side of caution and overuse singular. But then I read a lot of British lit growing up so my idiolect may be unreliable.)

How did you send a request? Where to?

 

I read that it's hard to get accounts right now but that I can try sending a message to natsu-kun so I did that... I sent a message and gave my mail address. I'm not sure if I'll ever get a reply or ever have an account but I gave it a try just in case ^^ Just thought that it would be easier if I edited rather than asking... we'll see what happens ^^
