It's the one month since the devastating March 11 earthquake. And the earth is not pleased yet. 2 strong aftershocks just hit in a span of 20 mins, both Shindo 6 upper (around Richter scale of 6). One of them was 7.1 Magnitude. 1meter tsunami warnings have been issued, and there are reports of lowering sea level (a sign of incoming tsunami). could be serious.

Sorry I just came back from a long vacation, and that's the reason why I was absent here for the past few days (went to California and Hearst Castle!), but we hope they're all safe after those past two strong aftershocks...

As far as I know, the rating change only reflects the situation (radiation levels) at the earlier stages of the crisis (reportedly, the radiation level has decreased over time up till now). Either way, you'd think with all the surrounding crops, evacuation, rolling power blackouts and effects to marine life that it'd constitute a "major accident with widespread consequences".

Personally, I think they're now just playing it safe/conservative - whether it's a wholly accurate depiction of the crisis I don't know.

After all, changing the rating doesn't change the real situation. I guess they were already doing their best to fix it and this will only make everyone (the Japanese more than anyone) worry even more. However, I hope this will help other countries to decide to help more instead of worrying only about their own butts....

The thing is quite a few people assumed that they were refering to another Chernobyl where infact the Chernobyl reference was there because it was the only other level 7 there has ever been, the incidents themselves are very different types of nuclear disasters.

    edit
some stuff from the BBC Website

    Press Release (Apr 17,2011)
Roadmap towards Restoration from the Accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

With regard to the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station due to the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyo-Oki Earthquake occurred on Friday, March 11th, 2011, we are currently making our utmost effort to bring the situation under control. This announcement is to notify the roadmap that we have put together towards restoration from the accident.

    1. Basic Policy
By bringing the reactors and spent fuel pools to a stable cooling condition and mitigating the release of radioactive materials, we will make every effort to enable evacuees to return to their homes and for all
citizens to be able to secure a sound life.
    2. Targets
Based on the basic policy, the following two steps are set as targets: "Radiation dose is in steady decline" as "Step 1" and "Release of radioactive materials is under control and radiation dose is being
significantly held down" as "Step 2." Target achievement dates are tentatively set as follows: "Step 1" is set at around 3 months and "Step 2" is set at around 3 to 6 months after achieving Step 1.
    3. Immediate Actions
Immediate actions were divided into three groups, namely, "I. Cooling", "II. Mitigation", "III. Monitoring and Decontamination." For the following five issues—"Cooling the Reactors," "Cooling the Spent Fuel
Pools," "Containment, Storage, Processing, and Reuse of Water Contaminated by Radioactive Materials (Accumulated Water)," "Mitigation of Release of Radioactive Materials to Atmosphere and from Soil," and "Measurement, Reduction and Announcement of Radiation Dose in Evacuation Order/Planned
Evacuation/ Emergency Evacuation Preparation Areas"—targets are set for each of the five issues and various countermeasures will be implemented simultaneously. Please see the attachment for detailed actions.

We would like to deeply apologize again for the grave inconvenience and anxiety that the broad public has been suffering due to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. We will continue to make every endeavor to bring the situation under control.

So...6 to 9 months until everything is 'under control'... I hope they have not underestimated the task ahead (and I pray for no aftershocks before they succeed) [sweat]

No, I doubt he even knew about AKB before he took that picture. Probably forgot who they are already by now.
