A boy with a ponytail.... I really like that.

That opens up even more possibilities. Wow!

So, we could have, if we take at face value, the claim that the song is about 'boy feelings' then we now have a male homoerotic song sung by young women.

Or, a song sung by a transgendered female- essentially a male homosexual in the body of a woman.

Or a girl crushing on a guy who is himself a cross-dresser (or just has long hair).

    The possibilities are nearly endless.

Though I do agree- whoever or whatever it is about- it is fun. The video really makes me wish I had gotten that teaching job I applied for in Guam. It looks so beautiful.

Let's just agree that the song is about someone longing for some other person.

I am so over this XD

Unrelated response to RSL, so it's under a spoiler~
I do know how art works XD. I fully understand where discussion comes from, but 9 times out of 10, an artist does not blatantly state the meaning of their work. They can give their intent like "oh I was feeling this when I made it~" & then you can infer from that. Regardless if someone thinks an artist is crazy, if they explicitly describe the meaning behind a piece, than that is the meaning.
Regardless of what YOU take from a piece, there is always the artist's original intent, that no matter how you feel, you can't change that.

The lyrics could have meant they wanted the guy to be as carefree as girls are.

Actually, in Japanese, the subject is never mentioned. We just believe the translations. It could have just been as easily read as "MY ponytail".

I like to think the song is actually a girl singing about herself and the guy.

    Ummm yes..... its about......

Hmm lets listen to Ponytail once more. Now, just by listening to it, can you say what the song is about now? The answer should be no unless you have a good understanding of the japanese langauge. My point is, to a majority of us, it sounds good yeah? That's really all you need to know. The rest are just gravy little bonuses that appeal to us listeners.

But what a rich gravy of potential interpretation and meaning. Potentially it has spice and flavors for all varied tastes.

I think the fun challenge would be to deconstruct the song to see it as a warning regarding potential nuclear war.

What if we take the entire attraction metaphor for the imposition of neocolonial relations throughout the world?

Guam is a nonstate occupied territory of the United States, I believe gained during the Second World War from Japan. Perhaps the decision to pick Guam as a location for the video is a metaphor for the location's dependence on Japanese tourism. Guam is attracted to Japan, but knows a real relationship is unrealistic (US military presence).

Then all the gender issues disappear, as Guam realizes it can only, at best, have a flirty connection to Japan. Ah, but what then does the scrunchy represent?

^ The scrunchie represents an elastic that holds a girl's hair back.

The scrunchy represents Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. It holds back their full aggressive potential, as a scrunchy holds back the full aggressive potential of sexuality. Guam is attracted to the peaceful nature of the new Japan- but knows it can't be more than a flirtation, because Japan lacks the military potential to consummate the relationship.

The song is definitely about the economic and political relations between Guam and Japan. It is the only logical explanation.

    :D

ARTICLE 9. Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. (2) To accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.

It's a scrunchie. It's used to tie up your hair. I doubt it has any deep meaning, like the rest of the song.

Actually, I am now certain Douglas Adams had it wrong, but was only off by a bit.

48 seems to be the ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything.

*wonders how this got all political* What started out as fun has now gone waaayy off course. [think]

Hafa Adai! (Chamorro greeting) Let me add some input (even though I'm a tad late) being a person from Guam, I feel I'm qualified to answer anything about my island. Guam and Japan have had close ties after WWII. Despite the occupational atrocities, we welcome the Japanese with open arms. The Japanese love Guam for it's beautiful location. Rather then fly thousands of miles to Hawaii, Guam is convenient. We have no natural resources other then what we pull out of the ocean. The beaches are beautiful- It's a warm tropical climate. Our hospitality is genuine and it's part of the reason why the Japanese love our island.

We rely heavily on tourism from Asia and Federal spending . We Chamorros are a people trying to recover our identity. Due to previous occupations our culture has all but disappeared as we integrated with our oppressors. If there's anything we admire from the Japanese its how they held on to their culture and at the same time live in the modern world.

I can go on, but I'll spare you all and get off the soap box. If you really want to hear my speech, shot me an email. Me personally, I think the song is about Summer fun. Fun to be young wild and free with not a care in the world. It doesn't matter if you a boy in love with a girl or a girl in love with another girl... I'll just take it a face value from what I see.

And I see that the girls look awesome in their bikinis!
