before 2008 i listened to mainstream american music. 2008 i switched to heavy metal, i was trying to impress a crush like the usual immature 8th grader 2009 i listened to alternative rock because i liked it 2009 i started listening to japanese music because thats when i started learning japanese and ever since then ive been into jpop
I guess my taste in music is rather eclectic. And I listen to a lot. At home I spend a lot of time listening to classical music and/or watching performances. Having been pretty much raised on it (and the Beatles) and having studied the piano myself, I'm reasonably educated about periods, composers and recordings. I've got a good collection of classical recordings. I devote about the same amount of time listening to a mixture of Classic Rock (70s), R&B (mainly 70-80's Motown), Jazz (mainly Blue Note) and 80s pop. To mention a few artists (in alphabetical order cause it would be ridiculous to rank): I'm familiar with the entire discography of about a third of these. I don't really follow up on current music, but newer artists that I like are Dispatch, The Killers and a number of mostly Japanese indie acts. The Japanese music I listen to ranges from current artists like Mr.Children, Bump of Chicken and other really poppy pop to ones that were active in the 70s/80s like Oda Kazumasa, Yamaguchi Momoe or Ozaki Yutaka. And then there's AKB of course. Certainly got phases where I listen to nothing but. I really stopped listening to alot of other music in the last few years. Music I usually do not listen to is techno, rap, metal and the like. There's exceptions though.
Anything good from any genre is good with me, but in general I don't like rap & heavy metal, but as HRP said, there is an exceptions. I am a big fan of Backstreet Boy, Westlife & The Corrs, & then around 2005 I started to like "Micheal Jackson" a lot, I listened to most of his most amazing songs. I think the worst period for me is from 2005 ~ 2009, I gave up listening to the western music, because they stopped giving me a great songs, for me it was a void period, I started to dig somewhere else around here & there, & sometimes I came back to the west to see if there is anything good from there, but the result is zero. then I stumbled in a very good singer from Vietnam who sing in English, her name is "Trish Thuy Trang", I recommend her to anyone who love beautiful & romantic pop music, & because of her I discovered a great Vietnamese singer who have the best & the most beautiful & perfect voice in humanity, she is the folklore queen "Nhu Quynh" & her most amazing song "Chuyen dui hoa sim". Watching J-Drama & Anime helped me discover the J-Pop I found "Arashi", "KATTUN", "NEWS", YUI, Aragaki Yui, Watariroka Hashiritai ~ & then the most beautiful BOOM of my life AKB48 & the rest of the 48 family, I can say that they saved my music life.
Wow, I never realized I got asked a question over a month ago. Sorry. They're probably not technically labled as "hardcore" though, more like metalcore. But my favorite bands are Chiodos, A Day To Remember, The Devil Wears Prada, Miss May I, Asking Alexandria, Blessthefall, August Burns Red, Enter Shikari, iwrestledabearonce. And that's about it. But right now I'm really into Parkway Drive, I've been listening to their album Horizons non-stop. It's so good.
Jpop, all the way (have not seriously listened to any english songs for the past 2 years and proud of it )

I don't really have a favorite genre, come to think of it. I grew up listening to classical and New Age such as Enya. When I was 12 or so I started listening to the radio, which made me a fan of some pop and dance music. Eventually I discovered the J-pop scene thanx to Kalafina, and went from there into the careers of Kajiura Yuki and Korenaga Koichi (respectively). Since then I've been listening to a majority of Japanese music, from '90s bands to Touhou remixes and of course AKB. Artists/groups/bands whose music I currently listen to: AKB48 NMB48 Enya Loreena McKennitt Coldplay Keane Owl City Camille Saint-Saens (classical) Kalafina FictionJunction FictionJunction YUUKA Chiba Saeko See-Saw Kajiura Yuki (soundtracks) Ishikawa Chiaki Korenaga Koichi (soundtracks) Utsunomiya Takashi Baby's Breath Touhou remixes (Syrufit, etc.) Itou Kanako 12-O-Clock I also listen to some other music on occasion from: Rebecca, Nakano Aiko, Utada Hikaru, TM Revolution, Saitou Saori, Hikasa Youko, Chihara Minori, Matsushita Yuya, girugamesh, lolita23q, Colbie Caillat, Sara Bareilles, The Killers, Celtic Woman, etc. If anybody's curious, I can recommend some music from these artists.
I used to be an altermative/rock listening kind of girl... until I moved to Japan almost 12 years ago. Now it's pop, lots of pop. My favourite artists are AKB48 (of course), Hamasaki Ayumi, Shiina Ringo, and L'Arc~en~Ciel.
Nearly all, but if I had to choose one which gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it, it would be classical. Specifically though, example are like game's OST turned orchestras like Zelda's expecially, would give sheer goosebumps in a good way while listening to every track, as it reminds you of the game like no other.
