Modelpress article (with photos) about the group's appearance and performance of 'Jiwaru DAYS' on Fuji TV's 'HEY HEY NEO!' show on 4/1: https://mdpr.jp/music/detail/1829894
From PRI (Public Radio International): an article plus the audio of the 7 minute radio broadcast. How a Japanese girl-group empire is conquering Asian pop Much of the focus is on handshaking as a business model. "The world’s biggest pop group, literally speaking, is AKB48. This Tokyo-based power-pop ensemble typically features between 110 and 140 singers. Most are in their late teens with a smattering of 13-year-olds and women in their mid-20s. When the group debuted in the mid-2000s, AKB48 was more easily dismissed as a novelty act. But in recent years, the group has expanded into a bona fide musical empire — one that has spread across Asia. It is now reimagining what it even means to be a pop group, borrowing elements from both “The Mickey Mouse Club” and “The Hunger Games.” AKB48 produces what is called “idol” music: in-your-face melodic cuteness, hypercatchy choruses, coquettishness that sometimes takes a turn for the PG-13. The AKB48 empire appears to have solved a puzzle that has vexed the global music industry for nearly two decades: How can musical acts profit when fans keep pirating and streaming instead of buying albums? BNK48’s reigning singer — Cherprang Areekul, 22, now one of the most popular entertainers in Thailand, period — once described this culling process [gaining popularity] as “brutality.” “It’s like … we have to slaughter our friends,” she said in an authorized BNK48 documentary titled “Girls Don’t Cry.” https://www.pri.org/stories/2019-04-04/how-japanese-girl-group-empire-conquering-asian-pop Note: the radio broadcast doesn't match the text. For example, it plays clips of Aitakatta in four languages. You should listen to it.
With the SSK out of the way, there's no schedule to follow. I feel like everything is kinda frozen until something happens with NGT. I doubt they want/can just keep releasing singles and expect the same level of support from TV shows, news stations and the like. They've also most probably lost their slot on Kouhaku, so if they stay silent for most of the year, they get an out to say they didn't get in because they haven't done much this year or something. Also... SKE added another HS event in May for Stand By You. NMB has HS events until the end of July (I think?) HKT went from less than 800 slots to 1200 in their new single and has HS events until September. It all looks as if the SG are taking up the slack somehow. They've probably been told that AKB, as the mothership and face of the 48G, can't really do much in the public until the NGT mess is solved. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a release like Love Crescendo with AKB members. That way they could give the girls something to do while keeping the AKB name out of it. Actual new stages would be the perfect distraction for the fandom though.
Here is a historical tidbit that popped up in my Yahoo jp news feed. It is from Sony about the Sakura no Hanabiratachi 2008 scandal. I have no idea why it showed up today. http://www.sonymusic.co.jp/Music/Info/akb48/info/080229/index.html
It looks related to Sony refunding canceled NGT HS events. Thing they only did before for the scandal above. See @Cisalpine88 's post http://stage48.net/forum/index.php?threads/ngt48-assault-case.22622/page-136#post-1586036
Thanks for posting this article. I try to tell people about AKB and they look at me like I just climbed out of a spaceship. They simply don't get it. At all. This article sums it up much better than I ever could. Now I can send them this in hopes they understand better. Thanks again.
