Having sushi in a ramen restaurant? Of course!
    (1:00 pm, March 12, 2020)

I’m Ruka Yamamoto of AKB 48 Team 8. You know how there are things that are obvious to us, but may not be obvious to others, right?
Well, as a representative of Wakayama Prefecture, me loving Wakayama ramen is one of those things.

Locally, we call it Chuka soba (Chinese noodles) or just Chuka (Chinese), and it’s main draw is the richly flavored soup made from pork bone and soy sauce,
which sounds ordinary, but what’s out of the ordinary is the ramen restaurants’ service.

After all, I’m sure in other prefectures you can’t get sushi in ramen restaurants!

While I’m sure everyone in Wakayama Prefecture is already very familiar with this, but it is common for ramen restaurants to have hayasushi (fast sushi) on the tables.
Hayasushi is a kind of oshizushi made by pressing vinegared rice and slices of mackerel on top, and customers nibble on it while eating ramen.

Some people eat the sushi as they wait for their ramen to arrive, and others, like me, eat the sushi and ramen in turns.
I absolutely recommend you experience this cycle of carbs rotating between deep and light flavors! I’m sure you’ll like it.

Even better is the boiled egg that’s also on the table. You can put one in your ramen or enjoy it as is by breaking off the shell.
Basically, customers pay for both the hayasushi and boiled eggs according to the number you take, so you can eat your fill!

I really wonder why this kind of culture grew in Wakayama Prefecture.

    ‘Wakayama peeling’ is amazing!
    (1:00 pm, March 12, 2020)

In the last entry, I wrote about how I sent Arida mikan to the homes of other members.
Now I want to tell you about the Wakayama Prefecture style of mikan peeling.

It’s called “Wakayama peeling.” It might be an obvious way to peel a mikan for people in Wakayama,
but in other regions, people have told me that it’s a revolutionary discovery.

Wakayama peeling is just as it looks in the photo, where you split the mikan with the skin still on it.
First, put your thumb on the bottom — the opposite side to the stem end — of the mikan, and without peeling, just break it in half.
Then, break it in half again with the skin still on, and there you have it! The final step is to just take out the pieces of fruit and enjoy!

This way is a lot faster than the normal way to peel a mikan. Also, the stem end of the mikan keeps the pieces together,
so it’s really easy to throw away the peel away when you finish.

It was surprising that something so obvious for the people in my hometown was such a revelation to others.
People of Wakayama Prefecture, please spread the word about this to people from other prefectures. I’m sure they’ll say, “Whoa! Wakayama is amazing!”

I have tried the Wakayama peeling and it's indeed amazing... coronavirus prevention - took me 5 minutes to wash all the spilled juice off of my hands

The Mikan sisters and the deliciousness debate

    (1:00 pm, March 12, 2020)

(Together with my “mikan sister,” Kaoru Takaoka, right)

We Team 8 members, who represent each prefecture in Japan, have a kind of culture of sending local specialties to each other.
What I choose to share with everyone is, of course, Arida mikan. Every year in winter, I send one box to members I’m close with as well as any members
who want a box for themselves. Well, to be honest, I have my parents send them for me.

Every year, I think they send about 20 boxes in total. It’s quite a lot, but every time I hear, “You just can’t beat the taste of a Wakayama mikan,”
it makes me feel like I have to send them next year too.

But you know, there is one member I’ve never sent mikan to, even though we get along really well. Ehime Prefecture’s representative Kaoru Takaoka, or “Rumba.”

When you mention Ehime Prefecture, you automatically think of mikan, right? When it comes to the number of mikan grown nationwide,
Wakayama is number one and Ehime is number two. Makes it seem like the winner is pretty much decided,
but even so, sending an Arida mikan to the home of your rival is as you would expect, a risky venture.
On the other hand, if I’m sent one it might make me think, “Are you trying to pick a fight?” (lol)

But all jokes aside, whenever Rumba and I are together, we talk pretty heavily about mikan. It becomes a debate on whose hometown has the best mikan,
but when I really, really think about it, I don’t think either of us has ever eaten the other’s mikan before.
We’ve been friends for five years now, so I think it’s about time I make her try a real Wakayama mikan.

Wakayama’s famous baths are overflowing with individuality
    (1:00 pm, March 12, 2020)

This time, I want to talk about something loved by many Japanese people: onsen hot spring resorts.
I think residents of the Kansai region are already aware, but there are many wonderful hot springs in Wakayama Prefecture!
Especially the Shirahama Onsen, mentioned in Nihon Shoki (The Chronicle of Japan),
which is a long-established hot spring resort said to be one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan
along with Dogo Onsen in Ehime Prefecture and Arima Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture.

At Shirahama Onsen, I recommend visiting the foot baths because there are so many unique ones,
like the Mifune Ashiyu foot bath right by the seaside. You can enjoy soaking your feet while getting a look at Engetsuto island.

In summer, after swimming in the sea of the white, sandy Shirarahama beach, it may be a good idea to soak your feet in a foot bath to heal your fatigue.

When it comes to Wakayama’s winter attractions, you certainly can’t miss the Senninburo hot spring bath at the Kawayu Onsen resort in Tanabe.
The large-scale open-air bath is filled with hot spring water from the bottom of a river. You can only enjoy this bath in winter, and people wear a swimsuit while in the bath.

There are many unique hot spring baths where you feel one with nature in Wakayama and I’d like people from all across the nation to know about them.

The giant fortunes of Kumano Nachi Grand shrine will shock you!
    (1:00 pm, March 12, 2020)

I’d like to introduce you to the Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine. There are many things to see, like the Nachi Waterfall,
but definitely the most surprising are the “giant omikuji fortunes,” which are said to be the best in Japan.
They’re 133 centimeters tall! Just like ordinary omikuji fortunes, there are sticks with numbers written on them in large containers.
For ¥100, you get a chance to pull a stick from a container. When you do, you tell the person in charge what number is on your stick,
and they’ll give you the corresponding fortune!

Of course, I tried my luck at New Year’s [last year], too. My result was suekichi, which means there is good luck to come.
For my desire reading, it said, “For the time being, it’s best to wait for opportunity to knock.
And my competitive luck reading said, “Now isn’t a great time, but upon reflection victory can be yours.”
So, I started this year with a lesson in patience from the gods.

Looking back, I went through a lot of changes and 2019 was a year of improvement for me.
In January, our song “47 no suteki na machi e” (To the 47 wonderful towns)
was voted by fans as their favorite song out of 100 AKB48 songs during the AKB48 Request Hour.
As for my personal life, in February, I got my driver’s license! In April,
I began classes at university, some of my fellow members graduated
and we also welcomed new members ...

It’s been quite a hectic year, huh?

Even in a year like that, with things like touring, public performances, appearing on local TV and radio, and taking about all of this work,
what probably got me through it all was the support from the fans and the heads-up I received for the year in my fortune.

What kind of things await us this year? I, for one, am looking forward to it.
