ITZY is the subject of Billboard's Emerging Artists Spotlight.

"Whether they are new to the industry, or have been around for a while but are just starting to have a chart impact, the intention is to showcase where they are here and now. This week’s pick is five-piece K-pop act ITZY, who debuted at No. 34 on the chart dated August 10 following the release of their debut EP, It'z Icy.

K-pop quintet ITZY arrived on the South Korean music scene earlier this year with their debut single “Dalla Dalla,” a vibrant, addicting track all about reveling in one’s own special differences and loving oneself. Since its release in February, the song has gone on to become one of the biggest K-pop hits of the year, peaking at No. 2 on the World Digital Song Sales chart on March 2.

Now ITZY is back with their second single “Icy” and first album It’z Icy, and the new music landed them on the Emerging Artists chart, where the girl group premiered at No. 34 on the chart dated Aug. 10. Their debut on the chart can be credited to the act’s strong social media presence and growing following, landing them at No. 20 on the Social 50 chart this week too; they previously peaked on that chart at No. 19 ahead of the release of "Icy."

ITZY will perform for the first time in the U.S. later this month at KCON 2019 Los Angeles, but ahead of that appearance, get to learn a bit more about ITZY below.

The reviewer for the OC Weekly recommends five acts to watch at KCON LA.

"With a roster of 16 acts (seven female and nine male) split between the two concert nights, we selected five groups that you should definitely keep eyes and ears on, even beyond KCON."

AB6IX
Daehwi (who went to school in Fullerton, by the way), Woojin, Youngmin, Donghyun and added member Woong have made splashes in the K-pop scene quickly, after only a few months since debuting their strong single “Breathe.”

LOONA
Loona has one of the most dedicated international fan bases from the new generation of girl groups. They also have a prominent LGBTQIA+ fan base, which Loona has come out in support of recently—something atypical for the K-pop world, though slowly becoming more common.

ATEEZ
A sold-out worldwide tour and EPs making it onto the Billboard charts are achievements that many established K-pop groups have on their resumes years into their careers. ATEEZ, however, did this not even a full year into theirs. With a solid stage presence due to their polished choreography and carefully crafted identity through their music’s messaging, ATEEZ quickly built an established fan base abroad that is akin to what groups with more years active achieve.

ITZY
On the girl front, one of the breakout acts of the year is Itzy. The music video for their debut song “Dalla Dalla” broke the record for the most viewed K-pop debut within 24 hours, and the song became the best-selling K-pop cut in the U.S. during the week of its release.

N.FLYING
The four-piece band’s track “Rooftop” was not going anywhere until about a month after release earlier this year, when a random user posted the song’s music video on an online forum–and it immediately went viral and hit No. 1 on every major Korean chart, making them superstars overnight.

"KCON LA 2019 Puts the Spotlight on Rookie K-Pop Acts & Girl Groups

With over a dozen K-pop acts in attendance, this year more than ever before turned its eyes towards rising newer acts, such as girl groups ITZY and Loona, and put a larger emphasis than ever before on female-oriented acts, like vocal-pop group Mamamoo and Japanese-Korean team IZ*ONE.

The main concert events at KCON Los Angeles witnessed the first-ever Stateside concert performances from LOONA and ITZY, two newer girl groups, and also featured rising acts like AB6IX, ATEEZ, IZ*ONE, Stray Kids, and Verivery, all of which put out their first albums in either 2018 or 2019 and many of whom have already gained sizable followings in the U.S., especially Stray Kids and ATEEZ who have both toured in the country this year.

For years, KCON has heavily veered towards male acts, but this year’s Los Angeles event featured the lineup leveling out, with six female teams countering the eight boy bands in attendance. While the male acts -- including SF9, and concert-closers NU’EST (Saturday) and Seventeen (Sunday), each of which had appeared at KCON NY and, as at that event, performed not only singles but also offered up some B-sides -- served up dynamic performances that had the Staples Center crowd singing and dancing along, the two nights saw the audience come together en masse to cheer on the girl groups.

Whether it was welcoming ITZY and LOONA to the U.S. with roars of approval for their captivating performances or dancing along to Momoland and fromis_9’s viral hits like "Bboom Bboom" and a remix of "Love Bomb" or joining Mamamoo -- who still dominated the stage as a trio even though they were down a member due to Wheein falling ill before heading to L.A. -- KCON 2019 LA was a surefire sign that K-pop fans in the U.S. are ready and waiting for even more estrogen to head over the Pacific in the future."
