Really enjoyed her performance at the HUETONE concert, she and Ayaka are such mood makers. Another Team 8 member I wasn't aware of earlier but really impressed by.

Gifu? Boring? There are so many fascinating things!
    (1:00 pm, March 26, 2020)

[Many people dance at Gujo Odori dance festival in 2018]

Hi! I’m Yuna! The theme of my series is “I’m going to settle this!” Gifu Prefecture is the location of the decisive Battle of Sekigahara. With that in mind, because I have the chance, I want to clear something up once and for all. We can finally settle the issue thanks to all of our fans sending in their votes. I’ve been afraid of what the answer might be, being a Gifu native, but we asked the question, “Is Gifu really as boring as I think it is?”

The results were 258 votes for “Yeah, pretty boring” and 207 votes for “Not as boring as I expected.”

Not a great result for the citizens of Gifu. I think those who voted “Yeah, pretty boring” are being a little harsh. Some people in that group wrote things like “How many people can even correctly write the kanji for Gifu?” “It seems like it’s just part of Aichi Prefecture,” “It doesn’t really stand out because it’s in Aichi’s shadow, like Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures [are to Tokyo].”

The response that especially stood out to me was, “No famous places or people come to mind.” I made me think that perhaps the charms of Gifu just aren’t well-known. For example, the traditional style of Japanese architecture found at the historic village of Shirakawa-go is not only beautiful, but the village has also been registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site. The traditional cormorant fishing of Nagara River is fantastic and the ayu sweetfish are delicious. Of course, they can be grilled and seasoned with salt, but when served as sashimi, it’s very crisp and unbelievably delicious.

In summer, the Gujo Odori dance festival is also amazing! The festival is held for roughly 30 days between the months of July and September, and people dance with all of their hearts. It a paradise for those who love festivals.

A spot I would definitely recommend to young visitors is the Site of Reversible Destiny in the town of Yoro. At this site, you can immerse yourself in the works created by world-famous entertainer Shusaku Arakawa, but it’s something you have to see for yourself. The buildings, walls and even the streets are distorted and slanted so you feel as though you’re not walking in a straight line. It’s as though heaven and earth have switched places. You’ll be able to take photos that are sure to wind up on Instagram.

I want to tell you about so many other places like Gero Onsen bathhouse and Monet’s Pond, but I’ll have to end it here for now.

Paying on a date to look cool
    (1:00 pm, March 26, 2020)

“When you’re on a date, should you split the bill? Yes or no?” We often receive a lot of feedback from our readers and fans, and this month, the subject is dating. The results of this month’s survey were surprising to me, as I was sure that “Generally, the man should pay for everything” would far and away be the most popular answer, but it only received 33.8% of the votes. The opinion that “the bill should absolutely be split” came in second with 30%, “It depends on the situation” came in third with 23.8% and 12.5% of the voters thought “Generally, the man should pay more than half of the bill.”

When I read, “the bill should absolutely be split” and “it depends on the situation,” it made me realize a few things. For example, for women who seek gender equality, having someone pay for them wouldn’t really make them happy. Also, since more and more women have successful careers, paying for a bill would depend on the situation. If my income was higher than the person I was dating, I would consider paying ...

What really made these ideas clear to me was reading the opinion of a teenage girl from Chiba Prefecture. She wrote, “Because I’m a high school student, I wouldn’t mind splitting the bill if the other person was around my age. But I find it attractive and cool when a guy can pay.”

Yes, I agree with that. That coolness level is important!

A man in his 40s from Saitama Prefecture had a pretty funny opinion, too. He said, “A guy should do his best to look cool. Even when money’s tight, he should pay for the entire bill and not make it seem like a big deal. Afterward, he can cry while he spends the next few weeks eating nothing but cheap meals like natto and rice.”

As I suspected, you don’t want to look as though you’re too concerned about money while you’re on a date, do you? It’s important in a relationship for both parties to feel good and cool when spending money.

When it comes to being an idol, ‘strike while the iron’s hot’
    (1:00 pm, March 26, 2020)

I’ve always wondered about this, but you know how there are proverbs with completely opposite meanings, right? It’s sometimes difficult to know which ones I should follow and I get a little confused.

For example, “Strike while the iron’s hot,” and “Haste makes waste.” After asking our readers and fans, which one makes more sense to them, and “Strike while the iron’s hot” got 103 votes, and there were 101 votes for the “Haste makes waste.” The opinion is splendidly split down the middle.

Someone who chose “Haste makes waste,” said, “I keep this phrase in mind to warn myself against recklessly acting without consideration.”

I totally agree with this person because I’m the type of person who immediately jumps at things I think are cool, and later come to regret it thinking, “Maybe I should’ve chosen something else, after all.” On top of that, I immediately say anything that comes to mind. I should probably take this proverb to heart.

But, when it comes to being an idol, “Strike while the iron’s hot” suits me more. There are some who think, “If you’re always waiting for the next opportunity, you’ll miss out.”

I personally believe that it’s important to grab and cherish every opportunity as they come, otherwise, the next on may never come.

The other day, I was given the chance to sub for Yuki Kashiwagi in a Team B performance. I was nervous and wasn’t really confident, but I gave it my all. I watched Kashiwagi’s video over and over to study her facial expressions and movements and managed to get through it in one piece! This experience actually gave me more confidence than I was expecting.

Enrolling in Team 8 itself was a big deal. My elder sister applied for an audition for me, so that it didn’t really make sense to me when they told me that I passed the audition. But, I thought, “Let’s give this a go anyway,” and stepped forward. That attitude created who I am today. So from now on, I’m going to keep grabbing those opportunities and doing my best!

    Landlocked prefectures need love too
    (1:00 pm, March 26, 2020)

Welcome to my series of articles that compiles the likely split opinions of fans and readers on a variety of subjects. This time, though, I’m thinking that I may have asked something I shouldn’t have.

Our question this time was, “Which landlocked prefecture is the most interesting?” which ended in a runaway victory for my neighboring Nagano Prefecture. My Gifu Prefecture managed to beat out two northern Kanto region prefectures and came sixth.

In Japan, there are only eight prefectures that are completely landlocked, so the results were as follows: Tochigi Prefecture came eighth with 30 votes, seventh was Gunma Prefecture with 33 votes, then Gifu Prefecture in sixth with 38 votes, fifth was Shiga Prefecture with 42 votes, not too far ahead in fourth was Yamanashi Prefecture with 48 votes, Nara Prefecture came third with 59 votes, very close to second-place Saitama Prefecture with 61 votes, first place was Nagano Prefecture with 160 votes!

I have to be honest, when I went Nagano Prefecture for a vacation, I thought it was a really great place.

“I thought Karuizawa was very stylish, and the nature of Azumino and Hakuba is amazing. You can visit some tourist destinations in the summer and ski in the winter, so it’s a great place to go year-round,” was an opinion of one of our voters.

I thought Saitama Prefecture coming second was a little unexpected, but as one of our voters said, “It’s convenient, comfortable and right next to Tokyo so I can go to the city and enjoy all the great things it has to offer. Also, rent is cheap,”

Perhaps one of the perks of Saitama is that people can enjoy the city!

Third-place winner Nara Prefecture is steeped in cultural heritage in addition to being close to Osaka, which adds a lot of value points to the prefecture.

What I realized about Yamanashi Prefecture coming in fourth and Shiga Prefecture coming in fifth is these two prefectures have strong Japanese “brands.” Looking at the reasons why readers and fans voted for these prefectures, many people voted for Yamanashi because of Mt. Fuji and many people voted for Shiga because of Lake Biwa.

Gifu Prefecture is close to Nagoya and is abundantly green with nature, so I think Gifu has really great things to offer, but in order to get the top spots, I think we need to find something amazing to promote.

For example, something that just came to mind is that Gifu is known for its fake food models on display at restaurants. Some consider Gujo city to be a sacred place because of all the different fake food models that can be found there, and it has become a point of pride for Japan. I think people from other countries would enjoy it as well.

Putting your heart into giving presents!

Valentine’s day is over, but I think it’s fun to give presents and it makes me happy when I get them! This time, we asked our fans and readers, “Which is better, giving presents or receiving them?”

Sixty-eight percent of the vote revealed an overwhelming victory for those who like to give, while the remaining 32% said they prefer receiving gifts.

Do those results surprise you? Actually, I’m on the side that likes to give, too! We received many opinions like, “Looking for a present while thinking of the person it’s for is fun!” and “I love seeing the happy smile [of the person getting the gift].” I feel exactly the same way!

I love seeing people smile too, so I normally give my fellow members things like snacks or juice as a small present. Of course, I also give out presents for special events like birthdays.

I gave former Nagasaki Prefecture representative Misaki Terada and former Iwate Prefecture representative Nanami Sato some lipstick as a present when they graduated from the group last year. When trying to decide what to get for someone, you spend that time thinking only about that person. That person’s smile or their expression, all the times they’ve looked out for you, these kinds of memories fill your mind.

Among those who voted that they prefer to receive gifts, some had the opinion that they are happy because the person giving the gift is thinking of them, but as someone who likes to give presents, if the person I’m giving a gift to feels that way, it makes me super happy.

There were also some people who said, “I’m never sure if the person will like the gift, so I’m not very good at giving or receiving gifts.” But what’s important when giving a present isn’t the item, it’s the feeling behind it, right? I always attach a letter or a message when I give a present. I recommend that anyone who isn’t great at giving presents, give that a try!
