Lyrics and Translations (Studio48)

hello, is there a thread where the song's lyric and movies/videos are explained? e.g sakura no hanabiratachi is pretty straight forward but song like (but not limited to) kibouteki refrain or kaze wa fuiteiru is not so straight forward in lyric meaning and the movie/video

I don't think so :/ You'd have to look in the threads of the individual songs. In the case of Kibouteki Refrain, there is a youtube comment (in English) explaining the meaning of the video very well.

after watching it for some time, I think this PV pretty much represent AKB48's center spot history so far, it started with AKB48's GM Takahashi Minami (2005), then to AKB48's Forever Ace Maeda Atsuko (2006 - 2012), then to SKE48's Matsui Jurina (2012), then back to AKB48's Shimazaki Haruka (2012), as you can see then came AKB48's Shinoda Mariko, see how she's NOT holding the bag, but help and lead instead, it represents how she is NOT the center, but more of a mentor for both Paruru and Mayuyu, interestingly then came AKB48's Itano Tomomi and Oshima Yuko, both holding the bag too, I think this represent the part where AKB48 kinda lost their track after Acchan's graduation, where they had 4 members fighting for center spot, and as the PV shows, it ends with Mayuyu's victory, after that the bag briefly handed to HKT48's Sashihara Rino (2013) and AKB48's Kojima Haruna (2013) as the center spot, then the bag once again returns to AKB48's Watanabe Mayu where she share it with HKT48's Miyawaki Sakura as the double center of this PV (2014).

The lyrics are just about being in love and that you are still hopeful that you'll become a couple even though deep down you know it's never gonna happen

And i also read somewhere that the masked guys are fans chasing the girls. what is your opinion on that? if I saw correctly, not all masked person have the same face too.

Speaking of golden microphones, there's also a golden microphone in NMB's Boku Igai no Dareka, and then Masaka Singapore (the whole theme of that was "Who stole the golden microphone?")

I think you're right though cause that was definitely the motive in NMB's PVs hahahah. Like who can rise up to the occasion after Sayaka lol.

 

In a lot of their videos the video is not directly related to the song. This might have to do with the fact that a majority of their lyrics revolve around romantic love between a boy and a girl, and it would be boring to always have the same theme for a music video.

Eien Pressure is another good example. In the lyrics, it's about a girl that feels pressured because a guy has a crush on her but she feels she isn't girlfriend material and tells him to look for someone else who can be a better girlfriend to him. I personally find the video pretty confusing, especially if you don't speak any Japanese. Paruru moves into a dorm and basically, the girls are all really strange. Yukirin is a stalker (stalking Yuihan), Tomochin is a secret agent, Mariko can read the future. Then there's one girl who seems to be an evil witch and Paruru goes out to collect this magic flower that seems to work against the witch, who then tries to kill her, but Paruru is stronger and makes it back to the dorm.

As for the masked men in the Kibouteki Refrain video, dutchie's explanation makes a lot of sense but so far I thought of them as antis. I always thought they wanna take away the microphones because, no matter who the center is, I always see some people complain; she isn't popular enough, she's boring, she's being mega pushed, she's been center so many times, etc etc. So I always thought it was antis trying to steal the microphone to give it to their oshimen.

Lyrically, Boku igai dareka is a love song, but it also made a great jab at the NMB's (current?) situation lol

Well, I can only be rustier since I graduated 5+ years ago. And my programme actually focused on translation between Chinese and English (NOT Japanese) and I didn't even know Japanese at that time.
So, consider me a noob in 48/46G lyrics translation.




Now this is my second attempt.
While I didn't end up using 'warota' or 'www' in the translation (seriously tempted to, though), I added a translator's note explaining them because I think understanding what those mean can help us appreciate the MV and the dance more. (If people don't know already, that is. lol)

I'm back and I brought home some angst.

Anyway, as I was translating this song, I couldn't help comparing it with Hiraishin (another Keya song). The 'I's in both songs are in a somewhat similar situation (basically, in love with an 'eccentric' 'you'), but they've taken completely opposite paths (I won't look for you anymore vs. I'll always be your ally; I won't shield you anymore vs. I'll be your lightning rod; etc.). More dedicated Keya fans may have figured this out already, but I only noticed it just now. I like how doing translation makes me really think about the source text more deeply.

(And it also looks like I've found the next song to attempt translation for? lol If no one gets to it first, that is.)
