I have been digging everything up from there recently!

A lot of members are popular among Chinese fans.
There are pages for many members, so I can't just say if she's popular or not.

 

I'm also really curious about the geographical distribution of fans and supporters, but I guess only those in the music industry would know this.
Are there any statistics available on the net?

 

For chinese fans, there's Baidu Bar. I found Sakura's one and I'm taking some other members (current and graduated) numbers too for comparison:

Amount of fans:

Watanabe Mayu: 590,000
Kashiwagi Yuki: 301,000
Maeda Atsuko: 296,000
Matsui Jurina: 262,000
Miyawaki Sakura: 160,000
Sashihara Rino: 62,000

Amount of posts:

The order is the same on both LOL but yeah that's how it looks like for chinese fandoms. But keep in mind Sakura is the youngest and newest girl among these. I tried searching for other girls like AKB new gens etc. and their numbers are really low so it's not worth adding to the list. Sakura is doing pretty well compared to all these big names, her chinese fandom is good and I think it will grow more.

@sscrla I can't believe I forgot Paruru I searched names based on who ranked in the top 3 of elections so I didn't think of popular members in general, but yes Paruru is popular in China as well, her fans are still active (same goes for all the other girls in top ranks). I didn't check for Yuko before, but I did just now:

Fans: 288,000
Posts: 1,079,000

Yuko ranks higher than Paruru, so that's the top 7:

1. Mayuyu
2. Yukirin
3. Acchan
4. Yuko
5. Paruru
6. Jurina
7. Sakura

I don't think we forgot anyone. Sakura is doing pretty well. Jurina and Sakura will really be the new rivalry in 48G LOL

Interesting that most are grad members and Sasshi ranks lower than Sakura. I would have thought Tomochin, Kojiharu, Marika, Milky and Rena would have been up their with Acchan.

Sakura's voice sounds nice when she sings in low notes, like here when she did the whole verse of Omoide no Hotondo. it's when she sings higher that it starts sounding shaky and she has less control. I guess she has to work on that. I feel like her voice gets shaky also because she gets nervous when singing higher...

By the way Sakura looks soo cool in the new SakamichiAKB MV . She often nails those darker songs like Dare no koto and Tomaranai. I wish she could perform this kind of song more often, because she really has a lot of potential (in pretty much everything really).
