Great EP this week! #39 (have there really been 39 of these? Waow :omg:)
    http://48videodouga.net/video/5588

We start with the gang walking along the 'shotengai', where Katomina finds a 'beehive'. Turns out it's a sugidama, a kind of bird's nest in cedar trees, hung outside the corner of a business. Katomina stops a man on a forklift and he tells them it starts out green, then as it ages and browns that lets the owner of the wine cellar know the new liquor is ready... the smoothness and familiarity of this oniisan with the sugidama impresses our gang -- it is his business, after all. Just then though... Katomina bursts out 'you look so much like my dad!" -- and the three members all go nuts over this, as he apparently does! :^^;:

The five press on... and hunger begins to gnaw at Nakaoka. Kokado finds a sign in the distance that reads 'dorayaki' -- the members rejoice! He reads it's a triangular dorayaki -- and Rika chimes in with a clap 'I know that one...'. Ogi asks 'it's not round, but triangular?' and Rika replies 'Probably'. :^^;: They get up to the door ready to tear into some probably-triangular dorayaki... and find it's closed -- their day off! The members loudly call out to see if anyone is home, and Kokado tsukkomis and they head out to find another spot...

Rika, then Ogi sees a symbol for ice cream outside an open business, and the girls run over -- poking their heads in to ask about TV permission, Kokado scolds their boldness. Turns out this place specializes in shiroebi, deep-fried and otherwise... Ogi, with her lightning metabolism, demands a menu... but to start Nakaoka sees 'Toyama black cider', which isn't familiar... he decides to buy a round to try out. Rika has a sullen look about it, and explains that one of Toyama's ramen specialties is a 'black ramen', which uses shoyu to get that color, so she feels it is probably shoyu-flavored. Ogi is jazzed about trying, her teammates not so much. Katomina esp, won't even drink carbonated drinks, due to her belief that it dissolves teeth :^^;: She's offered a taste anyway, and refuses unless she gets permission from her parents. Nakaoka teases 'you're a little old to be asking your parents for permission (yup, 18)...'. Ogi loves it (atta girl, luv her) and Rika predictably folds. Nakaoka challenges Katomina that if he wins 3 rounds of janken, she has to drink it. He loses on the first try. Their shiroebi dishes arrive, and Ogi of course raves, as does Rika... but Katomina pauses and reflects a while... saying 'ah... that's how it is'. When asked what she meant, she says 'individual shiroebi don't exist apart from the group, so the taste of each individual to the collective, elevates the dish as a whole. Idols are the same, as in each individual's effort to the group, raises the group. She's praised for this insight, saying she wants to be this idol... though I have to wonder -- why then didn't she just drink the black cider, to take one for the team? Why'd she get selfish there, then?

Kokado again (yay!) brings up the phoning-a-parent corner of this awesome EP :1st:. It's Rika's turn since it's Toyama. Is her mom at home? Yes, she says, obviously a bit embarrassed at having to call her on TV. She calls, it rings... she thinks she might be sleeping, to which Kokado tsukkomi's 'she can't be sleeping at this hour'... and yet, no one picks up. Next is Ogi... and she squirms. He's working now, right? No, he has a lot of free time. How does she know? Because whenever she calls, he picks up in one ring. And indeed, he does! :^^;: Ogi mentions she's calling during the taping, and Kokado greets and pleasantries are exchanged. Wasn't the sousenkyou result really something? He thanks everyone for all they've done to help. Ogi then chimes in 'you're a bit muted, aren't you?' He says no, he was trying to eat and wants to preserve the peace and quiet  They ask why his daughter claims he has a lot of free time, and why he picks up on the first ring? I have a cell and no friends, Papa Ogi replies :^^;::lol:

What was she like as a kid? She hasn't changed a bit, says Papa, was always trying hard in everything, just like now. Anything he wants from his daughter for the future? Just to continue just like this, he says. Is there anything bad you want to share about Ogi? Papa says as a man with only one daughter, it's not right for me to dwell on her faults. :cute: Who's his favorite member in NGT? Without a pause, he replies 'Tsugu-Tsugu' (Oguma Tsugumi) To close, Kokado leads with 'Niigata...' and Papa Ogi returns 'Furendooo' :1st:

We're in a park called Chuushinbu Kansuikoen (中心部環水公園) 'city center ringwater public park'. They find a group of foreign students, and try to appeal. Heard of AKB48? Most of them cheer. NGT48? One cheer :^^;: Rika tries to have them chant 'NGT... NGT...' and Kokado says to stop making them say it like 'USA' The last spot is a pair of towers there called Tenmonkyou (天門橋) with a 58m string phone between them. Lotti ask a woman to ask who it is on the other side. Rika shouts 'NGT48's Nakai Rika'. The woman says 'Asai Rika...?' :^^;: The woman says to 'Try your best!', to the excitement of the three girls. Nakaoka sends over 'Tell me a Nakai Rika secret she wouldn't tell anyone'. 'After a performance, asking someone to tell her if her feet stink' 'Of all the members, who has the filthiest purse of them all?' 'Katomina' 'Who of the members is the most airheaded?' 'Sugahara Riko' Now it's Kokado's turn to share... 'I use hair dye'. :^^;: Rika shouts across the span 'Is that right?'

Lastly, they actually hit a real, arcade-style shoutengai... and meet with two girls walking by. Rika asks if they know NGT48? No... Kokado asks if they're from Toyama, yes. How old are you? 14... (they look at least two years older). So in an attempt to appeal, Kokado asks Ogi if she has any special talents. So Ogi gives them her catchphrase... which, doesn't land very well. :^^;: So they're asked where they think Ogi ranked in the past SSK. They reply '20th'. Ogi, swelling with pride, says '5th'... which also doesn't land well.

So the gang heads down a side row where Ogi says a lot of people are gathered. Some boys are seated, and are asked who they think are the Niigata members, and who is the Toyama member... which of course, they get 100% wrong. So Kokado has Ogi shout out her pre-HS greeting for fans in the middle of the side row... and one guy in front of them recognizes NGT (thank dog :^^;:). He's even a Rika oshi! Kokado has the girls decide what to do to fulfill the man's wish that NGT perform a live in Toyama... so they do a little live for him. Just then, a voice behind them asks for the girls to do their live on some tiles -- slippery eco ice rink tiles. :^^;: They do a refrain for Seishun Dokei, to the enjoyment of the shoutengai... and they end. What a great EP! :1st:

It looks like next week's EP will be even more wild! Can't wait...

At the end of the show, did Rika say she wanted to go back home to Niigata (clips of next week's episode)? She looked a bit dejected.

^ I know... at first it was a bit of schadenfreude to see someone so confident of adulation get a dose of reality... but after seeing that, I think it hit home that she's more popular in Niigata and in other big populated areas through her SRs, than her own hometown...

I can sort of understand that, though. People who are willing to find fortune somewhere other than their little corner of the universe, usually aren't those who stay and put down roots in their own communities. So it's not at all surprising in that sense, that she's known more outside her hometown. Maybe Toyama young people just don't get into idols like in the big cities... besides, Moeka & Anju got their recognition in pretty big towns, in their own prefecture. So it's not fair to judge apples to oranges... but that's how she's taking it, at the end of the preview. :(:^^;:

I wonder how NGT48 no Niigata Friend viewership is like in Toyama. Hopefully the show will be watched by the same people who saw them during the recording but didn't know them. Hopefully they will come to appreciate their home town girl who is trying her best at her job.

I think the main point is that NGT is quite popular within Niigata due to heavy publicity and even with the government involved, but must be pretty unknown outside the prefecture to general public. Like in a previous episode when the members met some boys from Nagano (*guilty*) and asked them if they knew NGT, they said: "Well, people there know they exist, but ... (no one cares)". Rikachan aside (even being in her hometown), if the young people in this episode didn't even know Ogiyuka after all exposure on TV, it only shows that they're not interested in AKBG at all. But like she said, there's room for them to grow. :)

Episode 41 (Maho, Mofu, and Mau)
    http://48videodouga.net/video/5712

Today's episode takes place in Maumau's hometown, Ojiya. Also, for the now-regular telephone call with the member's parents, Mofu's dad is on the other side of the receiver to give her some lecturing for her gluttony *. Ouch.
"She's like this even at home, but she's stubborn and won't listen even if you tell her. If you think this is inappropriate, please at least tell her that she won't appear on the show again if she keeps up with this attitude" ┐(´ー`)┌

    * Suffice to say that the very first thing she did, upon looking at the fish-shaped underpass entrances at the begging of the episode, was asking if colored carps are edible

Episode 42 (Maho, Mofu and Mau)
    http://48videodouga.net/video/5764

    - Lotti judges your Instagram account (what the hell though, they left out all of Maho's Cinnamonposting)
    - A visit to the town's colored carp aquarium (Mau isn't afraid of feeding these huge monsters directly from her hand, Maho however... (´・д・`))
    - A small cadre of some middle school kids from the local track&field club shows up on the other side of the street to give the group a surprise greeting, which leads to Mofu (also a former member of the t&f club) engaging in a sprint competition with one of them. (*´ω`*)
    - Finally, once they stop to let Mofu get refreshed with a cup of iced water from a dispenser, they notice there's a calligraphy classroom right next to them and so they decide to pay a visit inside...

I love how savage Mofu was in this episode. She's great. The calligraphy portion had me laughing so hard when Mofu wrote 話し合い (Discussion) and said that it's a suggestion for the members of NGT [hehe]

Can't wait for next week! The preview looked wild

Episode 43 (Maho, Mofu and Mau)
    http://48videodouga.net/video/5830

    • To answer Maho's request for "something soothing" (sorta...), in order to relieve some stress Lotti brings the group inside the only kickboxing gym in town, just as they happened to walk by it. After some little warmup there comes the part where they can finally vent out the pent-up frustrations they have for others, using none other than Nakaoka as a sparring partner.
Stop playing the witch by riding on the broom and clean the damn theater's dressing room already, Rika. You don't want to piss Mofu off any further.
Also, Mau is getting sick of having to work as substitute for everyone else at theater shows, sometimes for as many as three consecutive days -- having to learn all positions and dance moves on behalf of 3-4 members at one time just makes her head explode, and she would rather go back to learning her own part only.
    • Now, for a real relief, the next stop is at a shop specialized in selling only towels, staffed by a "Towel Sommelier". As the lady at the shop explains, this is a real qualification with its own qualification test and everything, counting over 3000 certified members all over the country.
The store's staff works to find the appropriate towel for Maho, which can dry up quickly and doesn't stay half-damp forever. And since the lady mentioned that it can also absorb ammonia coming out of the human body, Kokado is quick to suggest that they can buy one to soak up and neutralize the smell of sweaty feet that Rika exudes by the end of theater performances.
For some reason this causes Mau and Mofu to fall silent and just pretend they didn't hear the last part. The caption on the corner points out that this is likely who they both had in mind at the moment, though. ( ゜∀゜)
Cue an actual demonstration of the towel smell-soaking power with the use of stinky ammonia.
    • Back to Uonuma to check "Mai (米) Friend", aka the little plot of rice field that Maho and others planted back in May (watch episode 27 for more context), see how much it has grown since then and harvest it at last.
With them coming to harvest at such a dark hour of the day, Kokado can't resist joking that they look like some "rice thieves". "The moment of the crime", reads the on-screen caption right after that. (´∀` )

Working together under the heavy rain, at first they set it as their goal to pick up enough rice for 20 onigiri.
However, soon enough Nakaoka realizes how many bundles it actually takes to make one, and so the staff proposes to bring it down to 8. Nakaoka then corrects to 10 onigiri, to make sure that everyone in the group gets 2 each, but Kokado wants to bring it down further to 6.
In the middle of this debate, Maho and Mau step ahead to say they would eat only 1 anyway, thus detracting 2 from the proposed 10 ...only for Mofu to come out and say she'd like to have 5 herself (3 more than her planned portion), thus bringing the final total up to 11! (゚ ∀゚ )

Anyway, it's not long before the rainfall becomes unbearable and they have to seek shelter inside the nearby shack from last time, leaving the field owners to finish the job for them, but in the end they can finally enjoy their hard-earned meal.

Looks like that the thread hasn't received a proper update about the new episodes in a month. So, I'm just leaving an overview here just for the sake of reference...

    Episode 45 (Nanako, Ayutaro, Otaki)

    http://48videodouga.net/video/5931
Episode 46 (Nanako, Ayutaro, Otaki / Ainya, Noepii, Miharu)
    http://48videodouga.net/video/5987
These two episodes were basically Part Two and Three of what might as well be called an Otaki graduation special. In particular, I appreciate how the group eventually arrived at Suntopia World (which is the largest theme park in the Niigata prefecture) and, although they found out that the amusement park was closed on that day, the staff still agreed to make an exception for them, and so as a graduation present for Otaki they opened it and allowed them to enjoy the various attractions. That was very kind of them. (´∀`*)

Near the end, the trio was also granted a little private time on their ferris wheel ride, so they could discuss among themselves about the situation of the Kenkyuusei team from now on and the worries weighing on their mind. Of course, the members can't wait for their promotion to finally come after all this time, but there's also the factor of age at play, which was also one of the reasons for Otaki's graduation, as she reveals. As Nanako pointed out, it's not that NGT members started out their idol career at a young age to begin with and she fears everyone would pretty much be gone in 5 years time...
Still, it's conforting to at least hear that Otaki will continue to keep in touch with other members to give them consultation and be friends even after graduation. (`・ω・´)

    Episode 47 (Ainya, Noepii, Miharu)
    http://48videodouga.net/video/6050
In one word: rocks. This one was quite a doozy, they didn't even need to try hard looking for weird stuff to do at ordinary shops, as this time they came across something genuinely bizarre just as they walked by.

I love how it just started with them finding a pile of rocks on the sidewalk and wondering as a joke if there was any "stone enthusiast" around (you might even call it a foreshadowing). Shortly after, they see an entire exhibition room with a bunch of rocks on display, which only makes them more perplexed as there's no signboards or price tags on them. And then they see there's a store selling beauty products, which is connected to said room.
The group enters to seek more informations and when asking the store's lady, they find out that it's her husband's stone collection. Long story short, the old man's hobby is picking up stones at the river and he's been doing if for 60 years already. As soon as he shows up, he brings our group to a nearby open-air space where he keeps even more rocks, and then he invites everyone into his personal "museum" built inside a two-story building.

While looking at the collection, an idea pops up on Kokado's mind, and he has the members play a creativity competition, with everyone choosing a rock and trying to give their interpretation of its shape.
Miharu interprets her rock as a sleepy buddhist monk holding up his head with his hand. Ainya's rock is a man holding up his little finger to make a promise. Noepii's calls her rock a "fusion between Da Vinci and Picasso", because one side looks like the Mona Lisa, while another is like Picasso's Weeping Woman. Hearing that, Kokado asks Noepii if she likes art or something, for her to give such an interpretation, but Noepii just says that she "understands it as long as it's on the level of things written on school texbooks". (´∀`;)

Lotti then turns to the old man for an evaluation of the answers. At first the man is at a loss and just wants to call it a tie, but Kokado nudges him a bit by asking if there wasn't really anyone who was different from the rest. He says there was someone who came up with an out-of-the-ordinary interpretation, which deviated from his and made him realize that such a point of view could also exist.
Noepii: "Who?", Man: "Well, the thing about that Buddha statue, even I or anyone else could conceive it...", which of course means that poor Miharu ranked at the lowest position. (´∀`;)
After some more time judging who thought more outside the box, the man in the end rules Noepii as the winner.
That's not enough, though: before leaving Kokado begs the man to donate some of his rocks to the girls as some kind of gold, silver and bronze medals, but as expected he's pretty reluctant to give away pieces of his collection and just ignores the request. However, he has soon a change of heart and when the group is already on the main street, he gives Noepii a small rock as a certificate of victory, which she now plans to put on display at the NGT theater, following Kokado's proposal. (´∀`*)

    Episode 48 (Maho, Riko, Rika)
    http://48videodouga.net/video/6110
    • After a brief walk from the city's station, the first shop that the group brings up to is your typical cakes and sweets shop.
Since it's Riko's duty to walk inside and ask permission for filming, she heads confidently toward the door believing it to be an automated sliding door ...which causes her to have a double take when she sees it's not moving and realizes that it's just a regular door which she needs to slide manually.
After overcoming this first hurdle, Riko returns back to inform that it's alright and the "madam" inside was so kind. However, there's actually no "okusama" to be seen inside, and she was referring to that relatively young male clerk behind the counter.
Everyone gets to eat their slice of sweet beans jelly and when Riko is trying to describe its taste with her mouth still full, Kokado requests Maho for assistance to (literally) translate what she's saying. Maho: "A lot of different flavors are coming forth little by little", "Why the translation in broken Japanese, though?!" Kokado remarks. (´∀`;)
    • On a side note, as the group is about to exit the store, the clerk reveals that he has spotted Nakaoka at the Kashiwazaki fireworks festival before. To Kokado's surprise, it turns out he was actually on the stage, dancing around. To his defense, however, Nakaoka rushes to explain it was at an event hosted by a fellow owarai group (Dainoji), and he came there merely to say hi to them, but they eventually incited him to get into a dance and so that's how things went down.
The talk about Kashiwazaki fireworks continues between Lotti and the members even as they walk down the street toward their next stop. Wondering how come the custom of firework shows is so active and widespread in the area, for some reason Maho asks Riko for her personal elucidation. Riko replies that it's because there's a lot of artisans who make fireworks around there and whenever one wants to fire them, they just go ahead and shoot them up all at once (like in a "Lawless zone", as it's spelt in the caption). "Even now, someone is probably firing one somewhere".
I actually love how as soon as she began explaining, the show's editors felt the need to include a text at the bottom warning that "* This is exclusively Sugahara's personal opinion", as if it wasn't clear enough... (´∀`;)
    • Moving on, their second visit today is at a clothes shop selling fashionable goods imported from America, Italy, etc... While looking inside, Nakaoka says he actually needs to buy something since he's in a short sleeved shirt, and Kokado proposes a competition where the girls choose some clothes that would suit him. Nakaoka specifies he's willing to pay with his own money, but when Kokado makes it clear that it necessarily has to be something selected by the girls, Nakaoka hesitates for a moment. Apparently he fears to think what Maho or Riko are going to choose.

Two teams are formed, by Kokado's decision: one consisting of Maho and Riko since they are close friends, while another is just Rika alone.
Rika immediately goes ahead to complain, as she accuses Kokado of acting in such a way because he wants to actively ostracize her from the rest. Kokado responds that having all three members choose three different clothes combinations would have been too much and two would be enough. Meanwhile, even a caption appears on screen to explicitly call Rika out on her "Victimhood Delusions".

Also, to serve as an alternate model for the second clothes combination, a member of the staff named Kawasaki-kun, who is pretty much Nakaoka's "clone" in terms of body frame, is also called in.
Another condition: the clothes chosen by each team must cost no more than 18000 yen in total, which is the maximum budget.

Fast forward to the clothes showcase. Rika proposes a "surfer-style" combination, which Nakaoka customizes by rotating the cap. Meanwhile, MahoRiko's is more of a "Nirvana" style according to Kokado, seemingly because the striped sweater is similar to Kurt Cobain's fashion. In that regard, Riko emphasizes that the notable feature of the sweater is exactly that the design is reminescent of Riko's beloved zebra crossing stripes, which brings everyone to have a hearty laugh.
Nakaoka then turns to the store owner for an opinion, and so she suggests him to keep the jeans of Rika's combination while taking the striped sweater of MahoRiko's combination, effectively mixing both of them together.
However, it's not until they check the price tags and calculate that the total would be way beyond Nakaoka's budget, that they realize that the store lady was basically influencing them into buying the most expensive clothes of the two. Very clever, but in the end Nakaoka resorts to buying only the "zebra crossing" sweater, much to MahoRiko's joy... ( ´∀`)
    • Back on the street, rain starts pouring down all of a sudden. While everyone else just looks inconvenienced by it, Riko's first reaction is calling it "wonderful". Why? To answer Kokado's question, it's because to Riko "rain is a friend" of hers.
Kokado decides to keep playing along and asks Riko if she is able to talk with rain, and so she agrees to give everyone a demonstration.
"How are things today? -- It says things are going swimmingly today."
"Do you forecast heavy rain afterwards? -- It'll be raining."
And then, following Nakaoka's suggestion, "Who's the one you like the most in NGT48? -- Aaah... It's me!" ( ´∀`)
    • By the way, Nakaoka also tries to have Rika speak to "rain-san". She tries asking if it's going to stop pouring, but the reply is apparently not.
This is then followed by Rika going into some irrational temper tantrum, where she looks in Riko's direction and openly threatens to punch her because her so-called "anger gauge" is 8/10 close to its limit. "Once it fills up by two more units, I'm going to beat her up!"
I'll just leave it here for the sake of record, without adding any personal comment about Rika's questionable behavior in this scene. Not just because of how completely misdirected it was, but especially because she has effectively zero friendship bonds with Riko in real life to even warrant speaking to her in such a rough and rude tone.
    • On more serious news, we also learn along the way about how apprehensive Riko's mama is. According to Maho, she tends to give Riko a telephone call once a hour, and send her a message on LINE about once a minute. Kokado wonders what these telephone calls are like, and Riko replies that they go along the lines of "Did you have lunch today yet?".
    • Finally, our last destination for today is a gym aimed at elementary school-aged kids, where they can enjoy all kind of physical activities after school.
Pretty self-explanatory part, actually. Here Maho and Riko have some fun with the hula hoops, which it turns out Riko is especially good at. Then it's the turn of some game involving stealing each other's towel, which is tucked around the opponent's waist.
Everything goes fine, until Kokado notices something odd: while they're in the middle of another game, he asks Riko to try putting her hands in the pants' pockets. It turns out that she has been wearing her pants backwards all along, and it takes very short for Riko to realize it. What makes it even more silly however is how the drawstring was dangling from behind the whole time, for everyone to see, even when she did her hula hoop number with that smug expression. (´∀`;)

And it's on this happy note that today's episode comes to a close.
      Jikoriko moments final tally: 8
See you all next week for the second part. Going by the preview at the end, in the "parent phone call" part we'll finally get to hear Riko's mama speak, too~

On a side note, this was the second time Lotti brought out this map of the Niigata prefecture. Apparently they're keeping track of every township they visited during the show and marked them in red. I wonder if there's any special purpose behind this, for them to display it just now. A couple episodes back, Noepii sort of joked that when the map is complete, the show will be over, but of course it doesn't seem to be the case. On the other hand, it seems they are now accepting applications from the areas that aren't marked yet -- even if it's not strictly a place, but an interesting person in there, they're taking it into consideration for their visit.

In a caring sisterly fashion, Maho also tried to speak in support of Riko while at it and pointed out that Riko's hometown of Seiro hasn't been visited yet. She assured that there's a lot of attractions in there, which brought Lotti to ask Riko to openly list three of them. "First off, there's the driving school..." she began, before realizing this certainly wasn't the best way to do a ranking of the most attractive features. (´∀`;)
