Also, an article about them in Fortune.

"It’s been nearly two decades since Japanese trio Perfume was formed in 2000, and through that time the act has become one of the most recognized pop groups in the country. Over the years, Ōmoto “Nocchi” Ayano, Kashino “Kashiyuka” Yuka and Nishiwaki “A-Chan” Ayaka have grown into their roles as the charismatic performers of the futuristic blend of synth-pop, techno, and EDM produced by longtime collaborator Nakata Yasutaka.

    [selected parts of the interview]

How do you feel about the year coming to the end?
Kashiyuka: Looking back to this year, we released an album for the first time in two years and we’re touring with it. For the tour itself instead of doing big stage production like we usually do, we went for simplicity so we can show people more of what we have to offer.

How do you see Future Pop as the continuation of the artistic evolution of Perfume?
Nocchi: We’ve been together since we were teenagers and working with the same producer ever since then. The entire time, Nakata’s been writing songs for us that match the specific time of our lives so that the music has actually matured with us. But for this record, he went back and wrote songs that feel young at heart.

You’re both music and style icons in Japan. Why did you decided that it was the right time to release your own clothing line, Perfume Closet in 2017?
Kashiyuka: It started out from seeing our fans at our shows doing cosplay of our stage costumes. But it was too stage costume-y. They can’t wear those in their daily lives. So we wanted to release things that people can recognize as being inspired by our iconic stage outfits, but can be worn on a daily basis. That’s the basic concept of what we wanted to do.

You have been working together for so long. How do you keep your relationship a positive one for yourselves, and why do you think it works so well?
A-chan: You should ask our parents. [The trio laughs.] We never thought that we would last this long, it’s already like a miracle for us. We want someone else to write a book about why they think we lasted so long so that we can read about it and understand ourselves a bit better.

New story about their tour and appearances in New York.

It's a warm evening in October and I'm sitting in a dark press box in an indoor sports stadium in Shizuoka, a relatively calm coastal city located about an hour and a half bullet train ride south of central Tokyo. On the floor and in the packed stands below me, fashionable young women in their twenties and 40-something salarymen wearing crisp suits and band merch are seated with their smartphones dutifully put away — a concert custom here — as they hold up paper fans and handmade posters in their place. Like myself, the crowd is patiently awaiting the onstage arrival of one of the biggest music acts in Japan. Every so often, a disembodied voice cries out from a corner of the venue: "Nocchi!" a woman shouts, while a man yells back to her, "A~chan!" "Kashiyuka!" another voice rings out. It's an electrifying pre-concert call-and-response as fans shout out the individual names of the women we're here to see: Perfume.

On March 30, the group will perform a world away from Shizuoka — specifically, 6,812 miles away, at Hammerstein Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan. After kicking off their upcoming world tour in New York City, the trio will hit five other U.S. cities in the spring (Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, San Jose and Los Angeles) before distinguishing themselves as the first female J-pop group to perform at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California. Their highly anticipated festival set will mark a turning point for J-pop in the West, as well as an international career high for a group already celebrated as phenomenons in the Eastern music market. It will be a major moment for Perfume, but also more largely, for Asian visibility in the U.S. music industry: The group's performance comes during the same year that BLACKPINK, one of Korea's fastest rising acts, will also take the stage as the festival's first K-pop girl group to grace the lineup.

They were interviewed about Coachella in Variety

"One of Japan’s most popular groups, Perfume became the first J-Pop act to ever take the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with a performance last weekend. Formed in 2000, the electro-pop trio will do another set at the fest’s Gobi Tent on Sunday. That concert will conclude Perfume’s U.S. tour to promote their album, “Future Pop.” Nocchi (Ōmoto Ayano), Kashiyuka (Kashino Yuka) and A-chan (Nishiwaki Ayaka) made the most of their Coachella experience: The group caught a bit of Ariana Grande’s show and attended parties hosted by Interscope and Moschino. The experience, they said, was a dream.

    How was your Coachella set?
A-chan: Performing at Coachella was so different from anything we’ve done in the past. The excitement of the audience was incredible. They didn’t seem to have too much clothes on! [Laughs.]

Growing up, which musicians did you look up to?

Nocchi: For Japanese artists, it would be a girl group called Speed. I also loved Namie Amuro.

A-Chan: Internationally, I must say Mariah Carey. Her songs were assigned to us to practice at the [dance and vocal school the group attended]. I used to think that high-whistle voice parts at the beginning of her songs were actually a whistle-like instrument. I didn’t think that it was a human voice! She has been our star ever since.

Do you pick up new languages easily?

    All: No, we’re not good!

A-chan: The English education system [in Japan] definitely has problems!

Kashiyuka: But because I want to communicate more in depth, I’m taking English lessons. I want to get better. [But] even though there are cultural differences and language barriers, if we share our love and passion for something, we can overcome. I feel that everywhere I go. We can connect through people’s kindness and warmth. Even though there are cultural differences and language barriers, if we share our love and passion for something, we can overcome. I feel that everywhere I go.

"On June 1st, Perfume appears at the music festival "Amuse Fes in MAKUHARI 2019 ~ love, love or something ~" hosted by the entertainment company Amuse held at Makuhari Messe. When Perfume performed in a purple-colored costume and performed the breathtaking dance of the movie "Chhayafuru" theme song "FLASH", a loud cheer arose from the 15,000 audience who gathered."

An interview with Perfume about beauty products.

Japanese Girl Group Perfume Share Their Cherished Scent Memories and Skin-Care Routines

While in New York City on their recent world tour, I got to sit down with Perfume to talk about all things beauty, including, but not limited to, well, perfume. Honestly, I wish this was a video interview because A-chan had me cracking up with dramatic reenactments of her most prominent scent-related memories and dream beauty technology devices. Alas, I'll do my best to use my words to describe both instances and the rest of my time with the group.

The group also recently released a hand cream perfectly named Perfume of Perfume with a spicy lemongrass scent that's close to their hearts. "This smells exactly like the oil that we put on before the show to give us confidence," A-Chan explains, holding up the small white-and-black tube. "We wanted to give the users and our fans a little push on the back for every day."

Is J-pop girl band Perfume destined for US stardom?

“Left side say shopping, right side say spree! Together, both sides say shopping spree,” Perfume singer NOCCHi beckons the crowd.

Moments later, on cue, the entire audience of 2,700 attending the San Jose, California concert scream “shopping spree!” to the delight of NOCCHi and her Perfume bandmates.

Screaming these two phrases about Perfume’s love for shopping may sound a bit cheesy, but the audience were all too willing to please the techno-pop, electronica Japanese group. Their concerts are known to be energetic, cheerful, and most importantly, fun for the audience.

The group’s fan engagement, backed up by infectious electropop, intricate hand dance moves, and a dazzling sci-fi, technological backdrop at their concerts that made Perfume one of the powerhouse groups in their native Japan.
