S48 Mafia Custom Roles Museum/Discussion

I just came up with this idea. Since many of us are quite fond of making Custom Roles, I figured we should display them (so they might be re-used in the future). This thread will also contain discussions on how to balance some past roles, and discussion creating new roles as well.

Of course, if you have a custom role for a mafia game that you have coming up, don't reveal them until after the game has ended.

All roles will be edited into the first few posts. Don't hesitate to re-use these roles as I'm sure the creator would be pleased to see their invention being used in future games. Use these roles to add more variety to your games in addition to the normal mafia roles that are available. Remember to tweak them around to match with your game.

So, I'll start off with the few I had made so far. I have quite a few that I won't reveal yet because they are better off as surprises.

Weather Changer
Used in:
Mafia I
Kashiwagi Yuki, Team B Captain – AKB48-Aligned Member

Description:
Going under the concept of Yukirin being the weather girl, she had the ability to control the weather in this early version of mafia. Her ability was simple in that she could choose to skip a night phase completely. This was intended to be used at opportune times to handicap and trap the Mafia as that is when they are at their strongest. When used correctly, town could lynch two Mafia members in 2 day phases without losing one of their own. It can definitely turn a game around at the last moment.

Unfortunately, this role never had the chance to use its ability, so we have no real judge of its power yet.

Abilities:
Skip Phase - Instantly ends the Night Phase and disables all other abilities used during the phase

Changes you might make:
Perhaps adding more weather-like abilities to this person would be good. Rather than letting them sit back for most of the game, giving them a lightning rod and other concepts could help strengthen and brighten the role

Manipulative Bomb
Used in:
Mafia I
Miyazaki Miho, Team B Loud Girl – Mafia-Aligned Member

Description:
This role was made under the concept of fear and manipulation. Being a bomb and mafia, this would force a town member to sacrifice themselves in order to eliminate the opposite faction. It also helps to create a sense of disorder between the players. Both aspects are not original, however putting them together helps to amplify the danger of the bomb role more.

The manipulation factor is so that the mafia can eventually force a strong town member to activate the bomb ability. By controlling their vote, the mafia can instill fear and still gain the advantage after being lynched.

Unfortunately, the player was lynched while they were away so the full extent of the role was not utilized in the game that it was featured.

Abilities:
Bomb (passive) - The player that kills or performs the last lynch vote on you will die as well
Manipulate - Allows you to change the vote of any player to anyone you choose, regardless of if they voted or not

Undying Avenger
Used in:
Mafia II
Oshima Yuko, Undying Leader -- Majijyo-Aligned Member

Description:
A complicated role that was a play on the tradition (frowned upon) Jester role. Unlike a Jester, this role doesn't automatically win from being lynched, however it gets access to a wide assortment of abilities by being lynched. This was intended to be another power role to help the townies.

A few problems occurred with this role as I put too many restrictions on it, making it far weaker than it originally seemed. In the game that it was used, the player was roleblocked on the night after being lynched. This rendered their character completely useless and got killed afterward.

Abilities:
Abilities could only be used on the night after being lynched
1) Weak Pride -- During the next night phase, kill a random player that had voted on you
2) Undying Resolution -- Protect yourself from night kills (Last for 2 night phases)
3) Full Investigation -- Learn the Role Title and Personal Ability Title of one target player that had voted on you

Changes you might make:
Perhaps making this a one-time activation would be better. So the player only needs to be lynched once and they can use their abilities from that point onwards, of course the abilities will need to be tweaked to match this. Ultimately, this will become a more powerful JOAT.

Solo Artist
Used in:
Mafia II
Choukoku, Solo Artist -- Majijyo-Aligned Member

Description:
In this game of mafia, there was a major lack of doctors. There was only one other doctor, whereas the mafia was incredibly powerful. This role was designed to be a power role on the town side. Not only did it have the power to protect other players from target abilities/kills, but it could also protect itself.

The secret weapon of this role is allowing the player to bait themselves to eliminate as many threats as possible if it was known that the player would soon die anyways.

Unfortunately, this role couldn't show its full potential in the game that it was featured in.

Abilities:
1) Meditation -- Protect yourself from target abilities (not including night kills)
2) Bodyguard -- Protect another player from night kills
3) Veil of Shadows -- Protect yourself from night kills, however you will appear to be guilty if investigated.
4) Untouchable Fortress (one-time) -- Kill all players that target you during this night phase.

Changes you might make:
It may be too powerful in some games if the mafia isn't absurdly overpowered. Also try to limit the amount of doctors if this role is used.

Alien
Used in:
Mafia II
Minami, Alien-Possessed Ghost -- Individually-Aligned Member

Description:
Easily the most over-powered custom role that I have created so far. I don't really recommend using this role anywhere else unless the game is designed to incorporate this role. This works by absorbing the corpses of dead players to gain abilities similar to what the player had while alive.

In the game that this was used in, the role quickly became close to unkillable.

Abilities:
1) Possess -- Gains a new ability by absorbing the corpse of another player
2) Alien Recovery (passive one-time) -- Allows you to survive 1 kill or lynch

The following are abilities that were gained in the particular game
Vengeful Lynch ~Allows him to kill a random player when lynched~
Alien Janitor ~Covers his kills~
Alien Poison ~Allowed him to poison one player. He will automatically gain the abilities of the player in the next night~
Alien Bypass ~Allows him to bypass immunity to night kills for one player~
Alien Shield ~Allows him to reflect the next action that targets him~
Alien Insanity ~The player must kill every night~
Alien Survivor ~Allows him to survive one lynching~

Changes you might make:
Either don't use it, or severely severely nerf it.

Marker
Used in:
Mafia III
Masuda Yuka, Takoyaki Songstress--Town-Aligned Member

Description:
I am quite fond of this role as well since I feel that it can be quite powerful when utilized well. This is a spin on a power role in which it allows the player to follow their target for multiple nights. It will also tell the player the target's killer, this is extremely powerful information, so the ability is limited.

Unfortunately, in the game that this was used, the player was killed during Night 1 and we never got the chance to see this role shine. Please try it if you find it interesting.

Abilities:
Used at random
1) Mark (3 uses) -- Places a "mark" on a target. When the target dies, all information about who interacted with the player between the nights the marked was placed and the night that they died will be sent to you.

Kamikaze
Used in:
Mafia III
Oya Shizuka, Comic Leader--Town-Aligned Member

Description:
This is one of those "all or nothing" roles where the player suicides to kill someone they suspect to be mafia. Not a very powerful role, but can be quite deadly and a good game changer if the mafia is unaware. The ability could be used similar to a daytime vigilante's, however it requires much strategy.

The player was killed during Night One and never got to activate the ability.

Abilities:
1) [bSuicide (day or night)[/b] -- Kill yourself and a target player instantly

I can't think of much changes for this. May not be for the faint of heart.

Gambit Master
Used in:
Mafia III
Uchida Mayumi, Janken Champion--Mafia-Aligned Member

Description:
One of my favourite custom roles, this is a mafia-like JOAT that works similar to a Skitzo. The player has the choice as to who they want to target, and they will randomly to one of the below abilities. The abilities are much more powerful than a normal Skitzo and therefore can have many wonderful results.

The role worked great and stirred up a lot of trouble in the game where people had to guess what each dice roll meant.

Abilities:
Used at random
1) Full Investigation -- Learn the Role Title & Personal Ability Title of the target player
2) Disable -- Stops all actions/abilities of a target player for one night
3) Frame -- The target player will appear to be guilty upon the next investigation
4) Lightning Rod -- The targeted player will become a lightning rod during the next night phase
5) Protect -- You will protect the target player for the night
6) Mutilate -- Kill the targeted player beyond recognition (their role will not be revealed)

Changes you might make:
Changing a few of the abilities to fit your style of the game would be a good idea. Otherwise, it works well.

Celestial Enforcer
Used in:
Mafia V
Yamamoto Sayaka, Celestial Enforcer--Kingdom-Aligned Member

Description:
A town power role made specifically for this game. This role had the ability to redirect all abilities away from the Princess and onto herself instead. Because of how powerful this was, there was a stipulation in that there is a chance that the Enforcer would kill a town-aligned member at random. The Enforcer would also act as a second life for the Princess and would die in her place should the situation come up.

The role worked well and it wasn't too utterly powerful while still serving its purpose.

Abilities:
Indestructible Armour -- When activated, this will redirect all abilities used on the Princess to you instead and renders them all useless. You also have a 1/3 chance of killing a random Kingdom-aligned member when this ability is activated.
Sacrifice (passive) -- The Enforcer will die in the Princess's place.

Changes you might make:
Of course, you would have to adapt this to your own story. Otherwise, it isn't too overly powerful and works well.

Mafia IV Custom Roles

Crossbow
Used in: Mafia IV, by Suzuki Mariya (Individual)
Description: Since a crossbow would have a scope and a bow, this weapon allows user to investigate a member's alignment, and then determine whether or not they wish to kill the member.
Abilities: Investigate + Kill

Description: Roleblocks member until member is contacted by a doctor.
Abilities: Extended Roleblock
Changes you might make:Make your doctors aware of the fact that they need to come in contact with people hit by this.

Crayons
Used in: Mafia IV, by Nakata Chisato, Mafia Aligned
Description: The single most ridiculous weapon ever put into a game. It allows the victim one kill per night, however this kill could in no way be janitored, and also left markings of the crayons in the death report the following day.
Abilities: Nightly kill.
Changes you might make: None, really.

Lead Pipe
Used in: Mafia IV, by Masuda Yuka, individually aligned
Description: Unfortunately this weapon was destroyed on the first night. When used on a victim once, it would roleblock. The second use on the same victim, however, would cause a kill.

Brainstormed some custom roles..

First... I loved my serial killer role in M2.. but what about this?

Daylight Killer

Used in:
Hopefully A Future Game With Large Number of Players

Description:
This would be a serial killer role with similar objectives as a night time serial killer except would use kills during day phases.

This would have to be implemented on a game that was moderated closely. You'd want to make it so that the write-up would come as soon after the PM is sent as possible. (i.e. If another player became suspicious of the daykiller openly, daykiller could use its day kill and instantly kill, therefore silencing) Would make for a great intimidation factor as well and could definitely help meet that hard win condition of last one standing.

Abilities:
First-Degree Murder -- This will kill target with whatever means necessary one time per day phase. You must kill one player during a day phase. Random target will be selected if day phase reaches less than 12 hours remaining and no PM has been sent.

Changes you might make:
-- Depending on how many people are in the game, perhaps giving a 25-50% hider ability on night phases, just to make it a little harder to kill and a little easier to survive til the end. Would not recommend this change for any game with less than ~20 players. Too powerful.

Second.. Okay, in Mafia VI we had an instance come up where we had back to back night phases. That. Was. Awesome. It sparked a whole lot of info and could be a game changer if you play it right.. soo..

DaySkipper or Flashbang

Used in:
Hopefully A Future Game With Any Number of Players

Description:
This would be a pro-town role with the ability to completely skip a day phase, giving two nights consecutively for town-aligned and independents, but only a single night for mafia.
i.e. User activates ability during night phase, all pms are sent, night write up is done. Some useless event happens, day phase and all day abilities skipped, second night phase. All town/independents get to use their ability again, Mafia cannot.

Flashbang.. in reference to blinding the mafia, never know what hit em, kinda thing.

Abilities:
FLASHBANG -- Used during the night; Skips a day phase. All pro-town roles get two consecutive night actions, mafia only gets first night action.

Changes you might make:
-- I think you make it so they cannot discuss their ability til after it's been used. Going to throw more red flags up at them, but would prompt them to have to use it at some point..
-- You could flip it and make it an anti-town, pro-mafia role. Two mafia nights, one town night... They would use this early to thin the heard.. probably better suited for a large game that way.
