Blame me for not researching first. My bad. :fp:

I agree with everything you said here. I'm just disappointed that girls have to take off their clothes for more exposure. :cry2:

Well - to be honest the girls from "Momoiro Clover Z" have NEVER done anything "remotely" Gravure. They've done video shoots w/ KISS & had lavish Lady Gaga style costumes and a early music video where all they did was Eat & Lick Ice Cream cones for an Entire song! dressed as Biker-chicks. But God Forbid I see Ahrin or Shiori in a Bikini (even though they are ALL 18 or over now!).

I do feel your pain Selinie - there's a Line I feel with Gravure. Oddly Oshima Yuko was a child actress & model - like when I first researched her I once found all these really old videos of her playing on a beach & she looked 11? This was YOUTUBE!! Sometimes there's characters in Anime's that have a girl who is "super rich" because she's a teen model (so apparently it exists). Being in Gravure is not as creepy as we Western people think.

Further Clarification of my Original statement
MY comment was that currently Jurina looks like she could host a beauty contest ANYWHERE in the world (like on TV) and Pass for 25 easily. She looks like she's ready to graduate COLLAGE - not High School. If Anyone should be taking advantage of the pin-up market you'd think it would be Jurina. Jurina could Easily be an International Model on Runways in Paris, Italy, NYC (ect) but like many of us know she's still 17-18 inside (mentally) and that's to be commended - You'd never find that in the West.

Lastly - My lament was more than Jurina is not taking advantage of gravure the way: Mayuyu, Yuko, even Acchan (and Paruru, Sakura, even Haruppi) have. But it's her choice. It's Possible she doesn't 'Have the body' for common Gravure - she's not built like the average Idol so perhaps she done traditional Gravure & it was "unflattering"? - No Biggie. THIS is why their are many choices in the Idol world.

Anime Seiyuu's (VA's) rarely have to do Gravure or Modeling but choose to do it so they can get TV work & modeling gigs when Voice roles aren't around - Japanese female entertainers try to be well rounded and have many arrows in the arsenal - Gravure is not easy. It can lead to photo books & print modeling I suppose. Japanese people LOVE youth & female beauty so excelling in Gravure is a status symbol of sorts in Japan. It implies you are healthy & desirable.
Western Opinions vary I assure you.

Geez way to be judgmental and make sweeping statements eh. So members doing gravure makes them cheap eh, do make sure to say that to them if you ever go to a handshake meeting.

And ya know, not every bloke who buys gravure mags is a sweaty-palmed deviant, there is and aesthetic appeal to the female (or male, whatever floats one's boat) form that goes beyond the sexual.

I completely understand you. I'm sorry for the previous misunderstanding.
And yeah, I'm Asian (Chinese) and from the west (US), but I've never seen or experienced this kind of... art before.
I shouldn't be this shallow about gravure. It's just that I'm not used to seeing this kind of stuff so popular in entertainment, even in the US with young teenagers.

It's not like the other girls in gravure magazine really have those boobs that are as big as their heads, photoshop and push-up bras would work just as fine on Jurina as it does on anyone else. The style of their gravure and how often they do it appears to have more to do with their image. The athletic tomboyish types seem to be unlikely to promote themselves in sexy underwear showing their feminine curves. Same goes for Rino for example, who is the underdog type, the few gravure(like) images I've seen of her are kept very natural compared to those of some other members. And this is generally speaking (based on stuff I stumbled upon), cause there are always exceptions, especially in the case of girls who are for example notorious for I guess having slightly bigger boobs than most others.

I was in Japan during the voting and just saw this now. Wow, didn't think Paruru would be this board's number 1 girl. :1st:

  9. I don't really like the whole gravure thing either. I'm not at all bothered if the girl is over 18. Not at all, that's their choice and etc, but when I see the younger girls in gravure... I mean, most of the time, I'm just like 'Awww look how cute they are!' and then I look in comments and see stuff like 'Sexy!' and it makes my skin crawl. It's not even the gravure stuff itself that creeps me out, it's the reactions to it. Honestly, seeing a 14 y/o idol posing while in a bikini is something you'd see most girls at that age doing on the beach for the lolz; it's normal, and it's something a lot of teenagers do, but when you've got these big age adults drooling all over them, I feel really creeped out.

I'm not Japanese and so I don't understand a lot of things, but I heard from a few people that things like gravure and pornogrpahy are readily available in Japan. I really wouldn't care if it didn't involve underaged girls in the minds of grown men. That type of stuff is pretty much inevitable though as there's always bound to be those sorts of people around and I honestly don't even know 100% if gravure is specifically meant to cater to those men.

On another note, Jurina has a really pretty face. She's got that maturity vibe around her and I could see her modelling in the future.

It sounds like it's mostly a cultural difference. I can't really speak to the view of gravure of Japan since I don't know very much about, but I understand your initial feelings about gravure since American culture tends to be more reserved about that type of stuff. However, I think the US does similar things but in different situations and the women tend to be slightly older (in their 20s). I feel like Victoria's Secret has a lot of similarities with gravure modeling in terms of appeal, but they have bigger budgets for the shoots, the photographers are better, and the models are more experienced. The Sports Illustrated Swimwear Issue, FHM Top 100 hottest women of the year issue, MAXIM magazine, and other publications sound pretty similar to the gravure appeal as well. Even Cosmopolitan magazine--which is targeted towards women--does the same thing. Even dudes get subjected to it: just look at Men's Health magazine--there's a shirtless dude on the cover with ripped abs like 50% of the time.

And honestly if you haven't seen that kind of art before you just need to look at more art. lol

    Agreed.
It is important to remember to not to fall prey to ethnocentric thinking, when inappropriate.
This thinking is when people judge other cultures or cultures of the past by applying their current culture's belief system.
ie. the magic number 18 for adulthood. This number had shifted constantly in history due to changes in 1) definition of an adult, 2) maturation development, 3) legal system

Like Monobroke said about America being reserved sexually, it is true to some extent due to its Christian roots.
In contrast, Japan was one of the few countries that wasn't affected heavily by the Abrahamic religions. Meaning their belief of sexuality is different. Knowing Shinto and Buddhism, they aren't very reserved about it.
Hence, it is important to not jump to conclusions that these are "exploitations" or in any form, an undesirable pursuit that adulterates the pursuer.
Rather before making judgements, what should be inquired is research on how these girls feel about this kind of work, while considering their cultural background.

I would love if this was the results of the real sousenkyo honestly ! I'm really glad to see that the "Paruru hate trend" is finally outdated. Yuihan reaching the 3rd place is a big surprise... but a pleasing one !
Mayu's drop is surprising, I honestly thought her & Takamina were the absolute number ones of the international fandom.
also glad to see a lot of my fave Nogizaka46 members ranking in... could have been better for some if I had voted though, but I forgot.

Jurina's low ranking surprised me a lot.

I'm upset that Paruru is number one, because I'm not a fan, but I understand that she's currently very popular, so it doesn't surprise me too much. However, I'm surprised that Mayuyu is not number two.

My Annin is sadly low, but I don't think she'll ever get the popularity she deserves.

I can totally understand the big number of negative votes for Jurina that greatly affected her ranking here.

It's very easy to "hate" on Jurina: aki-p's favorite, always in front, poster girl of a sister group member taking away a spot from akb members, etc. I like to think that people dont really hate her but rather see her as an easy target for the negative points (or a scapegoat or something).

Personally, as her fan, I don't mind her low ranking here. I firmly believe that Jurina is the past, present, and future of AKB, and Aki-P will do everything to make this a reality.

A little bit shocked when I know that takamina is not the 1st place....
But, it is normal, as the next center is going to be Paruru (I think?, in the newest single?)

Jurina was the "Future" of AKB......when it was Just AKB & SKE and no one cared about NMB..... in light of Team 4, HKT and ALL the other girls we've grown to love in SKE & NMB (Besides Jurina) - There are SOOO Many more Choices, flavors, & options that I think a lot of people don't see Jurina as the "Future" but as a Pillar & already existing talent. That New girl from Team 8 that everyone loves - She's the New Jurina (in my Opinion). We've been on this Journey w/ Jurina for like 5 years now - Why do we have to be "Locked in" to her when there are SO MANY other choices (all choices are valid to someone). I personally don't remember signing anything or agreeing to Jurina being the Future of anything - Who & What the Group resembled in 2010-2011 is NOT the AKB we have today.

I personally don't mind Jurina - She got a classic beauty & she's always energetic there's no RULE that says we're locked into what she's offering. I wish her the best but I think she needs to focus on SKE as it's her backyard - I think the tensions between AKB & SKE fans would only hurt AKB's bottom line if Jurina was suddenly the face (or in control) of BOTH SKE & AKB - there's not really any weird animosity between other Sister Groups & AKB - Just SKE. I don't blame Jurina for this. She's just doing her job. No one hates Jurina - but we don't want to be told "She's the Future- Deal with It" - YOU Didn't say that but I've run into a few people who think that way.
