Re: ~光~ The official Utada Hikaru Thread Who is this girl? Okay, I admit to having read some of this nonsense.
Utada still holds the record for the best-selling Jpop album OF ALL TIME! Her album "First Love" sold 9,500,000 copies
She's an okay JPop singer. I'll admit though, the only thing that really grabbed my attention for very long was "Wait & See", and that's mostly because she was hawt in the video. Though Hikari was a catchy song, too. Too bad her North American debut blew chunks, though. Except for like 1 or 2 songs, that was some of the worst music I have ever heard.* *All in my not so humble opinion, of course!
I'm not really dissapointed that her american debut didnt go superb. I dont really like JPop artists going all global anyway. But then again, that's just me again As for me, I can listen to This is Love and jump, listen to Kremlin Dusk and chill and listen to 光 and cry, there are lots of songs I really appreciate from her.. but those english dubs..? nah. Those can be easily skipped - except for the english version of 光.. but that'st just because i'm an hikari-otaku
I like Utada. she's very unique in her music. I prefer her newer albums over her old ones. I mean I liked the song "First Love" but the album is a bit too boring for me, then Deep River and True Blue is better. I actually liked her english album. I think it's good. Especially Exodus 04 and Kremlin Dusk. But still, the before mentioned albums are better.
Did they even promote her that well in the US? I mean, I have to look everywhere for the album when it was released in Europe. I had to go to a special cd shop, they only had one copy of it, which costed more than normal cds.
I think they only promoted her songs on radio and in some music shops and cafes. Edit: I heard her song was aired on MTV, but I'm not sure.
Okay i see. I just can't understand I had to go through all that, to buy an album, which should be like any other release. But also heard some fans talking about how bad a job "Islans Records" did at promoting her. But maybe that's just fans's excuse for her failure in the US
In Canda, you can find the HongKong version of Ultra Blue in many Asian music stores. Others artists are BoA, ayumi, and Namie, that is all. But the price is pretty good since they are HongKong version
Atleast you can find it there.. Its impossible to find something like that here, even if its an USA release, gah. I need to import everything or get it myself by going to Japan (gee, and do i have trouble with THAT last option )
There were a few decent songs on her 'western' debut album, like Devil Inside. But stuff like Easy Breezy were a bit painful. I know she does like a lot of western R'n'B, but when she tried to immitate it, she just became a bit generic, and lost what made her so special. I do adore Devil Inside though. I personally feel Ultra Blue is her finest stuff, I've been constantly listening to it since release, and am still not bored. I just love it. The entire style just hits all the right notes with me.
for those who haven't listened her new single yet ---> Beautiful World 01. Beautiful World 02. Kiss & Cry 03. Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words) -2007 MIX 04. Beautiful World (karaoke) 05. Kiss & Cry (karaoke) 06. Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words) -2007 MIX (karaoke) Beautiful World is the theme song for the new Evangelion movie...that explain the presence of "fly me to the moon"
^True In the beginning of March I was totally obsessed by "Beautiful World" For me, the first few times I heard that song I found it boring, then when i was in China, there was a episode of Music Station in one of the music channels, where Utada preformed the song and suddenly I found myself loving it.
