^On photoshop programs, etc, you can make the image smaller, so it can be 'normal sized' for your avatar.

You mean resize, the very basic MS Office Picture Manager can do that simple thing. And I don't mean to make the original photo at 100x200 pixel I was mentioning that at that dimension it looks bad for a 569x480 photo to be abused to that limit.

I prefer GIMP if I'm going to do editing that goes pass Paint level. The effects and stuff are more complex. I myself still haven't gotten the hang of it, but play around with it for a while and you'll know the basics. (It's freeware btw)
My school friends mostly use something called picnik to do editing on their photos, though I'm not too familiar with it.

GIMP is the way to be since most companies prefer freeware if the job can be done with it to avoid costly Photoshop. Its an added plus to your resume.

And you don't need to be familiar with picnik since its going down on the 19th of this month.

About alternative online editing software you can try creative kit, picmonkey, or aviary.

Another ones are fotoflexer and lunapic

I suck at graphic design, I only use GIMP because it crops better than Paint and I mostly use it to make avatars, GIFs and collages (have yet to make an AKB collage), and edit my gaming screenshots.

^ Well, mine is now a bit flashy and jumpy, bringing attention by annoyance, lol. Not to be kept for long, right... I need a good quality and small av gifs, by the way. Looking like previous (just slight movement). When I remake larger gif myself to fit with dims and size, it gets chessboardy and partial black border...
