The group, established in 2005, is produced by Akimoto Yasushi and is signed under King Records, originally from DefSTAR RECORDS/Sony Music Japan. Currently the group consists of five teams: Team A, Team K, Team B, Team 4 and Team 8. In addition, the group also has trainees called Kenkyuusei and an international transference team, Team Kaigai. They hold the record for highest overall single sales for a female group on the Oricon charts and also hold the Guinness World Record for world's "largest pop group".

The group also has five sub-units: No Sleeves, established in 2008, Watarirouka Hashiritai 7, established in 2009, French Kiss, established in 2010, and Not yet and DiVA, both established in 2011. Watanabe Mayu, Kashiwagi Yuki, Fujita Nana and also the former members Takahashi Minami, Iwasa Misaki, Kuramochi Asuka, Itano Tomomi, Kasai Tomomi, Maeda Atsuko, Oshima Mai, Ono Erena and Hayano Kaoru have debuted as soloists.

Annually, an election is held, called Senbatsu Sousenkyo (Senbatsu Election), where fans can vote on their favorite members from AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, HKT48 and NGT48. The same happens on Request Hour, where the fans vote on their favorite songs. In 2013, a new event, the AKB48 Group Draft Kaigi, was announced.

The group also holds annually the Janken Tournament, where the Senbatsu members are selected by a Janken (Rock, Paper, Scissors) game, the Kouhaku Utagassen, with special shuffles and the Unit Matsuri, with performances from sub-units and solos.

SKE48

SKE48 is a Japanese idol group based in Sakae, Nagoya, where they have their own theater in Sunshine Sakae. The group, established in 2008, is the first AKB48 sister group. It is produced by Akimoto Yasushi and signed under avex trax, originally from Nippon Crown records. Currently the group consists of three teams: Team S, Team KII and Team E. In addition, the group also has trainees called Kenkyuusei. Matsumura Kaori and former members Matsushita Yui, Deguchi Aki, Sato Mieko, Matsui Rena and Iwanaga Tsugumi have debuted as soloists.

The group also has a sub-unit: Love Crescendo, established in 2015.

Annually, the group holds the SKE48 Request Hour, where the fans vote on their favorite songs.

NMB48

NMB48 is a Japanese idol group based in Namba, Osaka, where they have their own theater in the Yes-Namba Building. The group, established in 2010, is the second AKB48 sister group. It is produced by Akimoto Yasushi and managed by Showtitle. They are signed under laugh out loud records. Currently the group consists of three teams: Team N, Team M and Team BII. In addition, the group also has trainees called Kenkyuusei. Yamamoto Sayaka and former member Watanabe Miyuki have debuted as soloists.

Annually, the group holds the NMB48 Request Hour, where the fans vote on their favorite songs.

HKT48

HKT48 is a Japanese idol group based in Hakata, Fukuoka, where they have their non-permanent theater in Nishitetsu Hall. The group, established in 2011, is the third AKB48 sister group. It is produced by Akimoto Yasushi and signed under Universal Music Japan. Currently the group consists of three teams: Team H, Team KIV, and Team TII. In addition, the group also has trainees called Kenkyuusei. Sashihara Rino has debuted as a soloist.

NGT48

NGT48 is a Japanese idol group based in Niigata, where they have their own theater in the Lovela 2 building. The group was announced on January 25th, 2015 and is the fourth AKB48 sister group. It is produced by Akimoto Yasushi and signed under Sony Music Entertainment. Currently the group consists of one team: Team NIII. In addition, the group also has trainees called Kenkyuusei.

STU48

STU48 is a Japanese Idol Group based on a cruise ship, where the group will have their own theater, located inside the cruise. It will travel through the Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Okayama, Hyogo, Tokushima, Kagawa and Ehime prefectures. It is produced by Akimoto Yasushi. Currently the group consists of trainees called Kenkyuusei.

JKT48

JKT48 is an Indonesian idol group based in Jakarta, where they have their own theater in fX Sudirman. The group, established in 2011, is the first international AKB48 sister group. It is produced by Akimoto Yasushi and signed under HITS Records. Currently the group consists of three teams: Team J, Team KIII and Team T. In addition, the group also has trainees called Trainee (Kenkyuusei). Nabilah Ratna Ayu Azalia and also the former members Neneng Rosediana, Stella Cornelia, Rica Leyona, Cindy Gulla, Sendy Ariani, Andela Yuwono, Milenia Christien Glory Goenawan have debuted as a soloist.

The group holds the JKT48 Senbatsu Election, where fans can vote on their favorite members. The group also holds the JKT48 Request Hour, where fans can vote on their favorite JKT48 song and also Janken Competition, where the Senbatsu members are selected by a Janken (Rock, Paper, Scissors) game.

BNK48

BNK48 is a Thai idol group based in Bangkok, where they planned their own theater in EmQuartier Shopping Mall. It was first announced in March 2016 and announced their first generation members on February 2017, becoming the third international sister group and second that is still associated with AKB48.

TPE48

TPE48 is a projected Taiwanese idol group based in Taipei, originally announced in 2011. On March 26, 2016, it was announced the group will debut.

MNL48

MNL48 is a projected Filipino idol group based in Manila. It was first announced in March 2016.

Nogizaka46

Nogizaka46 is a Japanese idol group. The group, established in 2011, is the first AKB48 rival group, produced by Akimoto Yasushi and signed under Sony Music Entertainment Japan. There are no teams in the group, with the members being divided by generation instead: 1st Generation, 2nd Generation and 3rd Generation. Members join the group as Kenkyuusei, being "promoted" after performing a song in a single.

Keyakizaka46

Keyakizaka46 is a Japanese idol group and the first sister group from Nogizaka46, produced by Akimoto Yasushi and signed under Sony Music Entertainment Japan. The group was announced on June 27, 2015, and the 1st Generation members were announced in August 21st, 2015. Currently the group consists of both Kanji Keyakizaka46 and Hiragana Keyakizaka46.

SNH48

SNH48 is a Chinese idol group based in Shanghai, where they have their own theater. The group, established in 2012, is the third international AKB48 sister group. However, because TPE48 has not begun activity, it is often considered to be the second. It was originally produced by Akimoto Yasushi, currently is produced by STAR48. Currently the group consists of five teams: Team SII, Team NII, Team HII, Team X and Team XII. In addition, the group also has trainees called Research Students. On June 2016 it was announced that SNH48 and its sister groups became fully independent from AKB48.

The group also has five sub-units: Seine River, established in 2015, Color Girls, 7Senses, ElectroEyes Girls and Style7, established in 2016. Ju JingYi have debuted as soloist.

Anually, the group holds the SNH48 Senbatsu Election, where fans can vote on their favorite members from SNH48, BEJ48, GNZ48 and SHY48. The same happens on the SNH48 Request Time, where fans can vote their favorite songs.

The group also holds annually the SNH48 Fashion Awards, a unique event in the 48 Group.

BEJ48

BEJ48 is a Chinese idol group based in Beijing, where they have their own theater in the Chaoyang U-Town Shopping Center. The group, established in 2016 with GNZ48, is one of the first two SNH48 sister groups. It is produced by STAR48. Currently, the group consists of three teams: Team B, Team E and Team J. In addition, the group also has trainees called Research Students.

GNZ48

GNZ48 is a Chinese idol group based in Guangzhou, where they have their own theater in the Tianhe Center Plaza. The group, established in 2016 with BEJ48, is one of the first two SNH48 sister groups. It is produced by STAR48. Currently, the group consists of three teams: Team G, Team NIII and Team Z. In addition, the group also has trainees called Research Students.

SHY48

SHY48 is a Chinese idol group based in Shenyang, where they have their own theater in the Shenyang Yulongcheng Mall. It was first announced in July 2016. It is produced by STAR48. Currently, the group consists of two teams: Team SIII and Team HIII.

CKG48

CKG48 is a projected Chinese idol group based in Chungking. It was first announced in June 2, 2017.

SDN48

SDN48 was a Japanese idol group known to be the "mature version" of AKB48, only with members aged 20 or above. The group, established in 2008, was produced by Akimoto Yasushi and signed under Universal Music Japan. There were no teams in the group, with the members being divided by generation instead: 1st Generation, 2nd Generation and 3rd Generation. All the members have graduated from the group, that disbanded on March 31, 2012. Former members Akita Kazue and Ohori Megumi have debuted as soloists

OJS48

OJS48 was a male Japanese Group, with former Osaka police officers and detectives, with an average age of 61 years old. The group, produced by Akimoto Yasushi, released only one single. All the members have graduated from the group, that disbanded on the same year of its formation, 2010.
