Ah, I don't know anything about Nanase. So I also don't know why she was popular. I have only been following Nogi for 3 months.
Well, both Nanase and Sakura are cute, quiet girls and wotas like idols like that (I've seen someone describe them like the type of girls you want to protect). Hinatazaka46's Kosaka Nao is similar, and she's still the most popular member.

What I like about Sakura is her improvement as a performer. There's a big difference from when she first started and now. I recently saw a Tiktok of her Igai Break performance (not sure what concert though) and she was really great. Her Kaerimichi center is my favorite after Nanase's.
