I think it could be the former. When I've seen her in Showroom I've heard her greeting people in a variety of languages including Korean and Thai. I can't remember her using any Philippine languages such as Tagalog but I wouldnt recognise them anyway and in any case I'm sure she could quickly learn some basic phrases (if she hasn't already!).

 

She doesn't even need to memorize Tagalog phrases (I think she knows a bit from last year's event), all she needs is to speak in English (which isn't a problem for her) and we're all sold.

I think her English is the reason why she's in this lineup besides her being free of schedule. She'll get picked most if not all of the time to perform overseas.

^ Yup, she was born in Tokushima but grew up in L.A. till the age of 10, then returned to Japan, so she learned Japanese from 10. Her mother tongue therefore is rather English. But her a little stilted and polite Japanese is also lovely

EDIT: Sorry, I made a mistake. She was born in USA, not in Japan.

 

Well, in both of her visits to the Philippines, she had the advantage of knowing and reacting to what was being said before the others could. She's also a solid performer.

Personally, her face appeals to Filipinos, especially the casual fans or even non fans who just happened to be in the event area. She hasn't performed in other countries so it's hard to gauge if her appeal is mostly to Filipinos or if she just appeals to foreigners regardless of nationality.

Well she did rank 1st as cutest team 8 member when they were in Guam.

 

She wouldn't stand a chance against Izuriina in India.

 

She is one of the member who caught my eye when Seifuku no Hane PV was released. I think she is really cute with mature vibe. When I attend the zenkoku akushukai, I notice many foreigners in Riona's line (including me, because Rin and Tani is on the same booth, so much win for one ticket). Maybe her charm works better for foreign fans, and knowing that she is the one you can communicate effectively as English speaker surely a big plus for her.

Well, having Riona vs Izurina showdown in getting Indian fans is an interesting idea.

Btw, I think she is getting more and more smaller. Or the others just outgrow her

 

That reminds me those idols that say they became shorter, because they have no idea that your height depends on the time of the day and the hours you've slept.

Unless you have any disease you don't lose height this young.
