going by average IG likes, she's even still top 2 with Rika; Ogiyuka slightly behind (she has more followers but she also posts more), more behind are Hinatan, Moeka, Maho. Minami is also 3rd by SR followers, but only slightly behind Yuka and she'd definitely surpass her if she streamed as much as her.

I used to be a lurker on this site for years until I made an account earlier this year and keep forgetting I have one lol but on to my point.... I know the elections have come and gone but I just remembered I had something to say about it since I was recently looking at some handshake results from last year and watching episodes of the hkt/ngt variety show also from last year and I thought and still think katomina had a larger fan base or one of the largest fan base among the ngt 1st gen and was also well known. I don't consider myself an ngt expect since I've mainly been into hkt for the past few years but started to pay some attention to ngt because of the obvious treat they were and still are to hkt's existence/future plus they had a variety show together and I bring that up because just under a year ago takakura moeka was just that weird/shy girl in ngt who was still developing her idol persona but between that time and this past June was able to gain enough fans to go from 0 to 25 ?? I'm not even going to get into Homma since I don't know much about her and that leap was much insane for me to accept than any of them. I'm more surprised since I wasn't following them very closely but had been observing them enough to pick katomina as my fav and eventually moeka started to grow on me at beginning of this year. I have officially lost my excitement for the elections after this year's and it has officially lost its purpose for me, even though you can,argue that the elections had lost its excitement some years ago I still think it served a purpose, to remind the management that the fans still have some say, push members who needed to be noticed, a way to support your oshi and of course it's mainly a popularity contest. However it's no more a reflection of this ideals or how popular a member is and dedicated her fans are, but how rich those "fans" are and among those "fans" can even be a small or big company because once a member is pushed to the top the whole public will take note and the rest will be taken care of, especially in this situation when lots of girls who are from a group that's been only around for a year (signed to one of best/successful labels who will do anything in their power to promote them and make sure they're successful so they profit) make large strides to the top and of course such huge or even miraculous strides will draw media and public attention since its such an unusual occurrence. Everyone was talking and in doing so gives the group and those girls who made such large leaps more attention and an audience and majority of those new audiences will later turn into fans because they will look into these girls that came out of nowhere and try to understand why girls like Homma Hinata and even Ogiyuka ranked so high and in doing so find a reason because there's always an answer if you really want it to be there especially since so "many" others obviously saw something there. Most of these new fans in turn will continue to vote to keep the girls still in the ranks or better yet make sure they stay high/climb in the ranks which will mean more $$ for AKS, management and of course the label.
Anyway my point is I was a bit disappointed in this year's elections, I'm wasn't expecting and wishing katomina ranked higher or better since I wasn't expecting her to make a giant leap since most of the other girls like Rikachan and Ogiyuka were increasing in popularity so katomina would obviously loose some fans to them since they were obvious aces of the group and were going to rank no matter what but those numbers are absurd. I guess to me it became more apparent that the main reason behind creating NGT48 (and also HKT) was mainly for profit and they started by working the city and its businesses which is fair game but once events like the Senbatsu Sousenkyo which used to be a thing for fans to give them lots of $$ because they want to become obviously tempered with or treated like an extension of the label's promotion/building up the group then that's going to far...

 

I think it's far too early to say anything about NGT's popularity. This was their first proper SSK year (like with STU this year, I don't count 2016 for NGT cause they had only just recently debuted and hadn't even had a first single yet. Kudos to Katomina for ranking, though). There are many good examples of ranking well after the initial 'push' and then dropping low again (such as Komiharu and Lemon-chan, I'm sure there are more).

Sousenkyo is one of the 48G's most controversial events, if you ask me, as it is a popularity contest and can take a high toll on some girls. And like you said, rich fans can get you places (such as Sasshi) so you might be suuuuuuper popular but your fans might be really poor so no votes for you :/

And of course, all sister groups were solely created to make profit. And with NGT's current popularity, we can see: it works. STU as well, they haven't even had a first single yet but so many people know so many of their names already and cheer on the kenkyuusei. To be honest, if a sister group was created in my country (let alone the area I live in), I would cheer on them like crazy too. Locality pride is huge, especially if it's a place like Niigata, which is more known for agriculture and landscapes rather than entertainment/idols. My country is the same, more landscape and fields, barely any famous people to support internationally. I would be very proud to have a group like NGT represent my culture and home. I would assume that lots of people from Niigata prefecture voted for their girls 'cause they wanted to see them represented in the big 48G. At least that's how I'd feel.

Sooo...even though Katomina (kind of) is a center on the b-side of the first single, will there be any chance she will be centering a b-side on the 2nd one? Or will those slots be going to Mahohon, Rika, Hinatan etc? I mean we can't fully predict but yeah. xD
