Nishino Nanase (Nanasemaru) / 1st Gen

How I see it, Nanase has always been somewhat shy and introverted. Another shy character would be Ozono Momoko, though in Momo's case she has senpais and from what I see is not that introverted. Nanase on the other hand, she maybe shy to even reach out to people, worrying if the person she reached out to won't be welcoming. Kazumin is probably her closest friend,, the kind girl that she is; Kazumin probably reached out and made Nanase felt comfortable. Although since they're not senpais and kouhais there maybe certain boundaries that Kazumin can't breach. I think what Nanase meant by "friend" is someone she could rely and lean on.

Not 100% sure where she said it -- if it was in NogiChu/Doko or in the 2015 Documentary, but she did say it. It lead to the beautiful video riposte by Kazumin stating that she was Nanase's friend.

IMHO, I believe why Nanase says she has no friends is because of her introversion.

From the 2015 documentary, it is established that Nanase displays introverted tendencies -- growing up she always played by herself always smiling, she likes to only hang out in her apartment in Tokyo, etc. This shyness extends to the fact that it was her mother who submitted her application and not her. She just nodded her approval of the submission.

So then, her introversion tends to dictate a lot of her daily interactions. She, like most introverts, gathers her strength by being alone only able to handle interactions with other people in a small quantities. Too much time amongst people would drain her. So she's very much used to being alone.

If she compares herself to other members, she may see that she's alone more than not and that she likes it that way. Because she's trying to understand why that is the case, she expresses it as having no friends. She is accustomed to being alone and finds it energizing, which is the opposite of how the rest of the world feels if they found themselves alone. Because extroverts are the majority of people in the world and somewhat dictate how we describe the world, they would say she was friendless because she spent a lot of time alone. She is using the phrasing that the majority would use.

Obviously, she's not friendless. It's just that she's expressing her introversion using an extrovert's vocabulary.
