    1. She first learned about AKB at 8 years old because her older sister was watching AKB48 MV.
    2. She wanted to join AKB48 because she admires them since very young, but the main catalyst is Oguri Yui senpai. Last year when she saw Yuiyui during "Idol nanka Janakattara", she thought idols are so cute and sparkly so she auditioned.
    3. Impressions of Gingham Check at HaruCon: She was so anxious that she was crying until just before the debut. However, the moment she stood on the stage and saw the fans with her own eyes, she really desired to have fun with everyone.
    4. The origin of her name "Mei" is the character Mei in Totoro.
    5. The senior she admired is Oguri Yui. She particularly likes her charming sad expression in Idol Nanka Janakattara.
    6. She would like to talk to Chiba Erii senpai, she looks like she is always having fun and smiling a lot.
    7. She looks up to Mukaichi Mion senpai. She thinks Mukaichi-san looks cool when giving instructions during rehearsals.
    8. She wants to try performing Nemohamo Rumor although she thought the intense choreo might not fit her image.
    9. Her fav song in 48G is Heavy Rotation! She really likes Oshima Yuko senpai in Hebi Rotation.
    10. The unit song she would like to try is Candy.
    11. In her mail, she wants to show her hobbies, her personality, both her fun and serious sides.
    12. Among 19ki, she is the best at: Cooking  Her specialty is gratin.
    13. Doesn't like fresh tomato, but can eat ketchup and tomatoes on pizza.
    14. Fav colors are pink, white, yellow and light blue.
    15. A graduate she wants to meet is Oshima Yuko, she wants to be someone like Oshima-san who is always cheerful and makes everyone smile.
    16. If she centers a song, she would like to wear a checked costume similar to Gingham Check and sing a cheerful song that gives people comfort and energy.
    17. If she was not an idol, she will be a chef  She can fillet a fish, so she wants to become a Japanese-food chef.
    18. Her obsession lately is collecting perfume. She is sensitive to scents.
    19. To take care of her health, she always eats fruits in the morning, especially banana.
    20. Aside from 48G, the song she listens to the most is Hitsuji Bungaku by Hikaru Toki.
    21. She wants her self-produced project to be fashion-related. (oooh she can work with Sarii [hehe])
    22. If you become her fan, she will make you smile and happy every day :D
    23. For the upcoming tour, she is nervous but will try her best.
    24. Introduce to readers: "Mentai, mentai, meimei!! From Kanagawa Prefecture, I'm 18 years old Hanada Mei! Always be cheerful, energetic, and make as many people happy as possible! I will do my best every day!!! I will do my best to make everyone happy, so please support me!!"

AKB48 19th Generation Research Student Hanada Mei: "A Girl Who Brightly Says 'Hello!' to Everyone" [Series: Why AKB48 in the Reiwa Era?]

AKB48, which debuted in Akihabara on December 8, 2005 (Heisei 17), has produced numerous stars such as Atsuko Maeda, Minami Takahashi, Haruna Kojima, Mariko Shinoda, Yuko Oshima, and Rino Sashihara, becoming a nationally recognized idol group.

More than a decade has passed since then, the era name has changed to Reiwa, and new star candidates are joining in droves. What drives these girls to become part of AKB48 under different circumstances than before? What are their goals? We delve into the charms of these fresh members through in-depth interviews!

In the fifth installment, we feature Hanada Mei, a 19th-generation research student who was introduced during the "AKB48 Spring Concert 2024 in Pia Arena MM" held in March. She made headlines by introducing herself to thousands of fans with, "I can clean fish." In this first part, we explore her journey to joining AKB48, her childhood as the center of her class, and why she learned to clean fish.

    ■ At the Choir Competition, I Told the Boys, "Sing Louder!"
――First, let's look back at your childhood. What kind of child were you?

Hanada: I had high communication skills from a young age, and I was the type of kid who would say "Hello!" to people passing by. I wasn't shy. I could chat normally with people I met for the first time.

――What was kindergarten and elementary school like?

Hanada: I was the kind of child who would brightly greet people with "Yaho!" and talk to everyone regardless of gender. I was known for persistently greeting people.

――With such vibrant communication skills, were you the center type in your class?

Hanada: In elementary school, I was the first to say things like "Boys, speak up a bit more!" during choir competition practice (laughs).

    ――I remember girls like that...

Hanada: The boys would react with "What the heck!" and it often became boys vs. Hanada. I would frequently complain to my mom at home about how they wouldn't listen at all.

――So you were the organizing type of girl, possibly class president?

Hanada: I became one. My elementary school had a "Children's Executive Committee," where children planned and organized events like sports festivals and cultural festivals. I was the MC for these events and also volunteered as the conductor for the choir competition. After years of doing it, I became known as "MeiMei the Conductor."

――Did you possibly become the student council president?

Hanada: I didn't want to take on such heavy responsibilities, so I aimed for about the third-highest position.

――What was middle school like for you?

Hanada: I went to a private middle school. At first, everyone was quiet and cautious, so I matched that by being quiet. But by summer, I couldn't hide my true self anymore and started enthusiastically volunteering for everything. There was a choir competition in middle school too, and I declared, "I'll be the conductor!" (laughs).

But my character and attitude, which worked in elementary school, didn't really fit in middle school. There were a lot of girls who were even more assertive than me, so I calmed down a bit.

――You used to do everything in elementary school.

Hanada: I was surprised too. I think it was because of adolescence. But I still hung out with bright and cheerful kids.

――Since you went to a private school, you must have taken an entrance exam. How did you do in your studies?

Hanada: I hated studying (laughs). It wasn't that I decided to take the entrance exam because I was good at studying. My mom's friend recommended it, so I thought, "Well, I guess I'll give it a try."

――But you can't pass entrance exams without studying hard, right?

Hanada: Not at all. I'm not good at sitting still. I hated sitting at a desk and studying, so I did the bare minimum. Rather than trying really hard, I went to a school that was within my reach.

――What club activities did you do?

Hanada: I joined the tennis club. A friend I became close with was joining the tennis club, so I tried it out and found it fun, so I joined.

    ――How was the tennis club?

Hanada: The physical training was tough. I wanted to get stronger, so I also attended a tennis school, but I only got as far as the second or third round in tournaments. I joined the tennis club in high school at first, but realizing I wouldn't improve much, I decided to try something new and quit.

    ――What happened after that?

Hanada: I decided not to join any club activities and just enjoy my youth. After school, I hung out with friends in places like Yokohama and Shibuya, or went to Saizeriya. We went there with the intention to study, but we ended up chatting a lot and not studying at all (laughs).

    ■ If I Could Clean Fish, I'd Be a Cool Woman
――Did you have any part-time jobs?

Hanada: I found a job listing for a Japanese-style pub that said, "The manager is a woman" and "Everyone is fun," and I absolutely wanted to work there because of those words. I applied and got the job (laughs).

――In a restaurant job, you usually choose between the hall or the kitchen.

Hanada: I was interested in cooking and wanted to improve, so I chose the kitchen. They suggested the hall, but since there were fewer people in the kitchen, I wanted to help there.

――You mentioned you can clean fish as a special skill. Did you learn that there?

Hanada: Yes. The head chef looked so cool when cleaning fish. I thought if I could do that, I'd be a cool woman too. When I got used to the kitchen, I asked to be taught how to clean fish.

I first learned with horse mackerel and got it right away. I quickly learned to clean sea bream too. Flounder was supposed to be quite difficult, but I picked it up smoothly. The head chef praised me, so I thought it could be a special skill of mine.

――That's an amazing talent. So, how did you come to encounter AKB48?

Hanada: When I was in elementary school, my sister, who is six years older than me, was watching the music video for "Aitakatta" on her iPad. I heard the sound and looked at the screen. I saw these cute and sparkling girls dancing, and I thought it was really wonderful.

Around the time I entered high school, TikTokers and YouTubers were becoming very popular, and I wanted to do something that put me in the spotlight too. But back then, there weren't any auditions for idols or anything like that.

――The 19th generation audition was announced in October last year. Did your parents oppose your desire to become an idol?

Hanada: They did say quite a bit that they wanted me to go to university. But I told them seriously that my dream was to become an idol and asked them to support me. They said, "Do your best," and supported me.

――How was the audition process for you?

Hanada: For me, it was a period of growth. It was the first time I really faced my future. I was able to strive for improvement because of the audition.

    ――Was there anything particularly memorable?

Hanada: The self-promotion time was very memorable. At first, I planned to talk about myself, but I realized that wouldn't convey much. So, after giving a simple profile, I showed pictures of me cleaning fish and did my special skill of winking while singing "If I Were Not an Idol."

――You packed a lot into it. Do you remember when you found out you passed?

Hanada: It was in the evening, on my way to meet a friend. I got the email notification, so I stopped on the sidewalk, took a deep breath, and opened it. It said, "You have passed." I called my mom, crying, and told her, "I've become a member of AKB48."

――How did the friend you were going to meet react?

Hanada: She is my best friend, and she knew I wanted to join AKB48. When I told her, "Please keep this a secret," she cried with joy too. (To be continued)

"Joining AKB48 Made Me Think, 'My Life Has Begun!'" [Series: Why AKB48 in the Reiwa Era?]

    ■ After the Introduction (of 19th gen), Going Back to High School and Hearing "That Girl Became an AKB48 Member"
―― How did it feel meeting the other 19th generation members?

Hanada: At first glance, they seemed quiet. The people I talked to a lot during the audition weren't there, so I only knew them by sight. I was a bit worried about what to do. That's why I introduced myself a bit more cheerfully (laughs).

―― I heard from the other members that you asked for everyone's contact information, created a group, and took the lead.

Hanada: Did I? I wasn't really aware of it. But everyone seemed nice, and since I'm the type who can get along with people even if we're meeting for the first time, I thought it would be okay (laughs).

Sari (Sarii Shiratori), Kairi (Kairi Okumoto), and Kawayui (Yui Kawamura) were quite lively, but Itomomo (Momoka Ito) is two years older than me and more composed, so I felt like our conversation tempos matched well.

―― The introduction took place on March 17th during the concert at Pia Arena MM (Kanagawa).

Hanada: I was so nervous I thought I was going to die. Our stage in such a large venue with just the five of us. I felt like I was being watched from head to toe, so I couldn't relax and just enjoy it. I kept worrying about what would happen if I made a mistake.

But when I stood on stage and saw everyone cheering with their penlights, my nerves instantly calmed down. I just wanted to make everyone enjoy it and get to know us more. I thought, "This is what it means to be an idol."

There were a lot of things to reflect on, but I was happy because I could enjoy it.

―― What was the reaction after the introduction?

Hanada: The introduction happened right before I graduated from high school. I went to school just for one day after that, and I was told a lot, "You joined AKB48, right?" "You've just become an idol!"

―― Did your classmates know you wanted to become an idol?

Hanada: I said it quite loudly (laughs). At the beginning of my third year in high school, since it was our last year, we were asked to stand in front of the class and talk about our dreams as part of our self-introduction.

Everyone was pretty normal about it, but I thought I should make a declaration, so I said, "I have a dream, and I want to become an idol!" This spread the word even to other classes.

―― Sounds like something out of a school drama. So, what was school like after your introduction?

Hanada: Since it was the day after the news came out everywhere, I thought going early in the morning might be a bit much, so I went just before homeroom started, which made me stand out even more (laughs).

―― The main character tends to make a late entrance.

Hanada: I snuck in from the back, but I could hear people whispering, "That girl became an idol," "Really?" I thought I had come at the wrong time. Then, during homeroom, the teacher said, "Congratulations, Mei!" and the class erupted in cheers.

―― It's amazing to hear such a story in real life! How did you feel when you officially started your activities?

Hanada: I had always admired being an idol, so it was deeply moving. I thought, "My life has begun!"

―― It sounds like a line from a drama. How did you find the lessons?

Hanada: Actually, I had been doing hula dance for about 10 years, so remembering the choreography and moving positions was really fun, even though it felt new after a long break. But singing while dancing was completely new and very challenging. I almost hit my limit, but recently I've started to get a little used to it.

―― What do you find difficult right now?

Hanada: Having more people know me, I find the words on social media quite scary. Recently, I've become more positive, so it's okay, but not long ago, even when advice was given like "Maybe you should do it this way," I would interpret it as "I was wrong," and become negative.

―― Words on the internet can be tough. Are there any fun moments?

Hanada: There are many. Being photographed, answering questions, and sharing it with the fans is enjoyable. It makes me think about how to improve for the next time.

    ■ What I Have Done Can Only Be Fully Utilized in AKB48
―― Recently, you performed for the first time as an opening act member at the AKB48 Theater.

Hanada: I was nervous. Unlike Pia Arena, the fans are very close. And since I was alone, I felt a lot of anxiety, but standing on stage changed my feelings.

It was like a switch flipped. The me before the stage is still me, but when I'm on stage, it's like my complete self emerges, the version of me I want everyone to know. I think about wanting to entertain everyone and wanting them to see more of my performance, so I try my best.

―― It's the magic of the stage. By the way, how do you see the current AKB48?

Hanada: Many people are talking about the new structure. I think we, the new members, have joined as a fresh breeze, and with this breeze, I want to create an even more wonderful AKB48.

―― How do you plan to build it up?

Hanada: I think that by emulating actions like those of Mion Mukaichi-san during concert rehearsals, we can improve.

―― What kind of things does she do?

Hanada: During rehearsals, while I am only focused on whether I am making mistakes, Mukaichi-san watches each person's position and gives detailed advice at the end of rehearsals.

If each member expands their perspective like that, I think AKB48 will become even more wonderful.

―― At first, you might not have the luxury of time, but it would be great if you could reach that point. What do you want to achieve as an AKB48 member?

Hanada: I want to work hard on singing and dancing, and I also want to try variety shows. I really want to promote AKB48 alongside my seniors and make it more well-known. I also want to take on new challenges and keep expanding what I can do.

―― Is there a specific new challenge you want to take on?

Hanada: For example, I want to try playing the drums. I want to learn and perform "GIVE ME FIVE!"

―― That's a song performed by a band made up of members.

Hanada: I can’t keep a rhythm yet (laughs). But I want to take on challenges like that.

―― What does AKB48 mean to you?

Hanada: It's the place where my dreams came true. I feel like the things I've done so far can only be utilized in AKB48. I’ve been a bright and cheerful "yahoo" kind of girl since I was little, but I don't think I could showcase that in another group.

Also, my competitive nature might only come out in AKB48. I believe AKB48 is the only place that would accept who I am now.

―― AKB48 is certainly known for being bright and energetic, and sometimes it demands a fighting spirit.

Hanada: Joining AKB48 changed my life, and I'm grateful to the seniors who have kept this group going. AKB48 is a very precious and wonderful place.

her first appearance in Nemousu made me like her. shes like a mixture of Mion and Nakai Rika. . her personality is “just right” as well. not too reserved but not too obnoxiously cutesy like what i was expecting.

This is my first time posting here! but I've been keeping an eye on the 19th gens since their introduction and Meimei is one of the first members who got my attention. I found her pretty, and I remember reading one of her mails where she talked about books and I just liked it (yes I love books lol) and I often see her tweets on my timeline and she posts good content, she sometimes talks about things, like it's not just selfies. She also posts some nice pictures, and I noticed that she often replies to other members tweets and I find this very nice and sweet!

Also, she seems to be the one who's doing the best at talk events for 19th gens, and I'm not surprised at all, when I saw her the first time, I just directly felt like she would do well at talk events lol. First, she seems to have some experience as streamer! and the other reason is that she directly reminded me of Miion at her debut! and so I expected her to do good like Miion did at debut, and it happened haha. I'm glad that Meimei is doing well! I hope that she continues doing well and that we'll eventually see her in senbatsu soon! <3
