Quick Question: if survival idols debut, why keep them here instead of the main thread? Just curious.

 

It would make sense to do that although for me it's a way around the 'do not post again within 24 hours' rule if I can post about different groups in different threads.

Random Thoughts, don't mind me. Out of the three 5th Gen Girl Groups that debuted in these last 3-4 Days, (ILLIT, UNIS, ME:I), I really like ME:I's debut the most, followed by UNIS.

What time zone are we using again?

 

My post was slightly tongue in cheek - what I mean is let’s say maybe NewJeans releases a new MV which I post in the Hallyu thread - then an hour later perhaps Purple Kiss releases one - rather than having to add it to my post in Hallyu I can make a new one in the PD48 thread. I would never post about one group across multiple threads.

ILLIT is a very interesting group with many capabilities. I think Hybe set lower expectations for their debut when Youngseo left in the beginning of this year. I didn't watch the survival show, R U next?, but I heard she was the most popular member among the overseas audience. She gave confidence boost to the group. Now we will never see what she could give in this group. It was either her or Jeongeun to be in this group. Jeongeun lacked confidence so that was her doom against Youngseo.

Even without Youngseo the debut has broken all records for a debut album. NewJeans had the record until it was overthrown by ILLIT. aespa's Savage was overtaken by Le Sserafim's Fearless and NewJeans self-titled debut overtook Le Sserafim's Fearless. The new record is ILLIT's Super Real Me. It kinda reminds me of Keyakizaka46's Silent Majority in 2016 which broke all records for a debut and it went viral. It exceeded the company's expectations. This group was the only reason I paid attention to J-idol scene in the first place. Songs were good for J-idol material.

Hybe seems to be doing things right nowadays. Belift Lab had Enhypen before ILLIT. It's the same producers at the agency being in charge of ILLIT. What makes me excited for the future is to hear Yunah talk about different concepts they have in mind to challenge. It seems Belift Lab gives freedom to ILLIT like Ador does with NewJeans.

You can ask yourself, why is Hybe on trend with their girl groups?

All their girl groups have their own distinct image and sound. I shouldn't exclude fromis_9 but they debuted a long ago and is doing alright but not on the same scale as these girl groups. I think fromis_9 had same unluck as Gfriend.

Le Sserafim: hiphop/electropop/reggaeton (Girl crush, mature)
NewJeans: R&B/UK garage/Jersey club (Y2K, teen crush)
ILLIT: Pluggnb/Lo-fi/City pop (Webtoon, dreamy)

Speaking of webtoon, they announced a webtoon for ILLIT, Summer Moon. Where the group will go from here after the debut will be a exciting time to follow. I think ILLIT deserves its own thread when they get more content. They have still not announced their official name for fandom. Le Sserafim has fearnots and NewJeans has bunnies (it was clear from their debut cover) so my guess would be "dreamers" for ILLIT's fandom?

I'm very pleased to see the group do so well here on their debut as I've fast become a fan of them and I've managed to get hold of an all-member signed copy of their CD from a very legit dealer in Korea who I've used for a few years:



Hopefully they can visit London sometime soon
