I'm confused. So, there was no traditional wedding ceremony?? Were the director and Aki-p the only people in attendance ''in the early morning of the 5th''? So at 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning, they drag these two older men out of bed and get them to witness their wedding?? Is this the way it's done in Japan??

So, first, you get ''legally'' married in front of two witnesses and then at a later date, you can choose to have a traditional ceremony or not? Is that how they do it?

To get married before the law you only have to present a declaration at the town hall. Two witnesses and an official stamp on the document are sufficient as confirmation. Newlyweds are then registered at the koseki, the Japanese civil status registry.

Couples go to an agency if they want a western style wedding or a Shinto wedding hall for the ceremony and a large banquet hall for the party. Everything is linked to a luxury hotel to receive all the guests.

Each guest has to make a speech.

Finally, the envelopes with money brought by the guests for the newlyweds will be collected. Other types of gifts are not allowed.

About the schedule? The agencies only do two ceremonies a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

PS: If choose the western ceremony it doesn't mean that are a Christian, even the reverend of the ceremony is an actor, it is because the bride wants to wear the wedding dress.

    Marriage is a legal construct.

Follow these steps to get married in the State of California:
    1. Choose your married name, if you plan to change your name.
    2. Apply for a marriage license in person at the County Clerk-Recorder’s Office.
    3. Give the marriage license to the person who will perform your marriage ceremony.
    4. Return the signed license to the Clerk-Recorder’s Office.
    5. Purchase a marriage certificate for your personal records.

Number 3 can be a judge, member of Congress, a mayor, etc. as well as the usual religious officiants.

And you need two witnesses to sign the license.

The reception can be months later.

It doesn't mean you're a christian in the west either
Having a church wedding does (at least for one member of the married couple, my sister had a church ceremony and 99% of the visitors were, like her, agnostics or atheists but her husband to be wanted a church wedding)
A church wedding has, at least here in the Netherlands no legal standing, for that you need to have a civil wedding.
It's obvious the situation in Japan is basically the same

btw, as far as I know Takamina did not have a grand wedding either (or if she did she kept it really private, but neither Miichan nor Nyan-Nyan mentioned a reception/party and I would those two to have been present at the very least)

It could be that Takamina's wedding was a Shinto ceremony attended only by the closest family and a few friends of the couple.

My understanding is it's common in Japan to have your marriage registered at the license department first and the ceremony at a later date (if they decide to have one at all). Paolo from Tokyo chronicled his marriage and he and his wife did a mini Q&A about the general differences between marriage in Japan and the US.

In the States it's common to have the marriage certificate filled out and signed at the ceremony and the officiant submits the certificate for registration afterwards. Two of my friends had small courthouse weddings where the judge officiated and submitted their certificate for filing the same day, the rest of us had ceremonies with officiants filing the certificates later. My friend applied for an officiant license for my wedding and fretted about properly filing my marriage certificate haha. For church weddings permission is given by the head of that church to have the ceremony there, so usually one or both of the couple are religious and attend the church in question. Most churches have you attend their marriage classes and at the end of them the head will basically judge if you're ready to be married according to them and will either agree to officiate or decline and tell you to try again later.

I do hope Tomochin has a ceremony as I would love to see her outfit! Same with Nyanyan, I've been waiting to see if either of them marry just to see their ceremony outfits. It's like waiting to see what their grad gowns look like all over again.
