First day sales of 59,771 have put 'Seishun Subliminal' at the top of the Oricon singles ranking :

I'm glad they topped the oricon charts but... what happened to their sales?? I compared it to the previous singles' first day sales and was a bit shocked...

5. Sagase Diamond Lily – 85,788
6. Zurui yo, Zurui ne – 126,687

Considering CAMEO has been dipping in and out of the charts over the past few months, I expected more... I'm a bit doubtful they'll reach 100k at this rate. In the past, they only got ~10k more within the week. 70k for the first week, when CAMEO hit 155k in its first week, is a bit frustrating to witness.

 

^ as expected, online events weren't able to fully replace handshake events after all. I think everyone's sales dropped greatly because of COVID.
moreover, CAMEO's events were still running just a few days ago, and only 4 rounds of sales for Seishun Subliminal were done, so there is still hope for long running sales, because first Seishun events will start only in mid-February.

oh well, at least they increase their digital rankings
CAMEO was 34th on iTunes but Seishun Subliminal is already 22nd

and it is still in 8th place. I think it's their most viewed MV in the first day.

I agree with @fatrain The online HS events can't take away the special meaning of personal meeting your beloved idol I think a lot of fans won't go all out with massive buying online HS tickets. Only supporting but not this much.
Every idol group went with the sales down.
Tsubaki Factory sold with their last single only 37k, the previous had 81k copies sold. It's normal.
I think important is for the groups and fans they do not stop releasing stuff just because of Covid. And =LOVE does the right thing.
Even with decent sales, the single is and I am happy they released new music this soon since CAMEO

I guess I had underestimated just how much impact handshake tickets had on sales. I always did know that they encouraged more buying, but I never would have expected it to cause such a massive difference.

It's a relief to know, though, that it's not just =LOVE.

(off-topic: maybe this drop in sales for everyone is also why AKB isn't releasing anything... they don't wanna break their 1m sales streak )

@bonjourmarlene yep, 1M streak is probably the reason why AKB is caught in a limbo state, unfortunately. they will definitely break it if they release a single right now. and I think it's not just that online events are less popular than HS events, their throughput is worse so they have less tickets per slot regardless. I've read that with all slots sold out Seishun's sales can only be around 90-100k anyway, but I don't know how accurate that is, I never was into the whole HS monitoring thing, that's management's business and not something fan should be obsessed over

and yeah, nowadays idol CD sales almost entirely equal to HS sales (or other bonuses), because CDs don't sell on their own anymore. this is true for all musicians. even the most famous artists with tens of millions views on Youtube sell only tens of thousands CDs without HS. it's not because of COVID though, CD sales declined a long time ago with expansion of Internet.
