Haruka Shimazaki (hereinafter referred to as Shimazaki): I knew Shakespeare's Hamlet, but I didn't know Osamu Dazai's New Hamlet. I was surprised that such a work existed, and when I first picked up the script, there were a lot of difficult kanji, so I closed it immediately (laughs). It felt like I was reading a textbook, but as I read the script over and over again, my understanding deepened and the unique twist became more interesting.

――Ophelia, played by Shimazaki, is a delicate yet strong woman. What kind of image did you have of her?
Shimazaki: The age is not clearly written, but I think that the readers of Hamlet are probably around 15 or 16 years old. She has a girly side that is appropriate for her age, but she has a mature way of thinking, and when I was the same age, I didn't think about it this much. The costume itself made me look childish, so I don't think it's okay if I don't force myself to look like a girl.

――When did you become interested in acting?
Shimazaki: I had no interest in acting until I entered AKB48. After I joined the group, I was allowed to appear in dramas and movies, and I gradually became interested in this kind of world.

――Did you have any hesitation in acting?
Shimazaki: At first, I was shocked that I had to speak so loudly in front of so many people, and I remember being very embarrassed. To be honest, even now, I always feel that acting is difficult, and I may not be in a state where I can genuinely enjoy it. It's rewarding because the work remains, though.

――What made you decide to become an actor?
Shimazaki: When I was still in AKB48, I auditioned for a morning drama, and since I passed it, I decided to graduate at this time. Until then, I hadn't even thought about graduating, and I didn't even think I would pass the audition, but when the morning drama was decided, it was the moment I decided to graduate.
