Halloween Night Handshake event - Makuhari Messe, 6th september 2015

It has been already one year since i've been to my first AKB handshake experience, and it felt like yesterday. This time the event took place in Makuhari messe, better known as the venue of the Tokyo Game Show. Since i live in Chiba, it was only 2 stations away from where i lived. Compared to Yokohama (1h30 transportation). It was much more convenient. Weather in japan was not too hot, but quite humid. I advise people to get some spare t-shirts, a bottle (to avoid big queue at the conbini), deodorant/chewing gum, and above all, SUPER COMFORTABLE shoes (compensate sneakers for example). After 6 hours waiting in line, you will crave for leg painkillers. Also avoid jeans that stick to you, it is hell when you sweat.

    [IMG] [IMG]
despite his plain look, Makuhari Messe can welcome the whole 48 fandom. Picture speak for itself.
Many changes occured, as Suzukake nanchara handshake happened before the tragic accident with Annin and Ricchan. When you enter the handshake area, you will have to pass through a serious body check up where bunch of security staff+cops search your bags and use metal seeker. When you got a bottle, you need to drink a little to see if it is not poisoned or not. Well, better prevent rather than cure. There's a lot of staff so the wait isn't too long. Each time you get outside to eat/get some fresh air, you need to do the check-up again. There was a long line for goods, but i didn't bother to look around because i'm broke. There's some remaining stuff from AKB grand sports festival, and usual stuff. Cool clothing like birthday T-shirts or exclusive towel are sold on respective sister group website and are all sold out. Fans knows where is the real deal. Staff dared to sell overpriced shaved ice branded with your favourite oshimen, the cup was around 700 yen next to the sitting area. And it was selling a lot. Maybe they were good, i don't know. No picture sample as i was lacking time to wait for a 700 yen ice cream.

Talking about hanging out. Since i had a free slot 3 to eat, i was looking forward to see the birthday comittee line. Fans were celebrating their oshimen birthday such as Iwatate Saho, Kodama Haruka and Watanabe Miyuki. Also, team 8 members had very active stalls, with many people interested in writing messages. First of all, i wanted to write a message for every members i liked who were going to celebrate their birthday soon. Unfortunately, it took much longer than planned. I didn't even had time for chat with fans that slot 4 had already started. That is unfortunate, as i think they looked like very open-minded people and caring to listen to what you say; if you can speak japanese, that is. While it was forbidden to take picture in the handshake area ( police+ staff everywhere, so you understand i couldn't take picture on the inside), fans comittee were kind enough to let me take some pictures. I think they were proud to show how well decorated their stalls were, and it was indeed impressive! Very colorful.

    [IMG] [IMG]
HKT Birthday stalls. Some offered pins and candys to attract people to write down a message.

On the right of the entrance, was the Photo trade corner. It lengthed something like 300m. Still impressive as ever. Here's the rule : You show your rarest picture up to trade, you show the uncompleted set you wanna fill, or you write on a placard what you're searching. It's very well organized, and some people have like dozens of folder full of official pictures ( nobody buy unofficial pictures anyway, because fans are interested in collecting sets more than pictures themselves). As i said before, you trade; you don't buy. Because trading is the core of the fun. That's also why many people have a lot of variety in what they offer. HKT, SKE, AKB, etc. Of course, everyone had bunch load of pictures from Halloween night, so the main trades were about old photosets being hard to find. Popular members like Sakura, Shiroma Miru, Yukirin or Jurina were often being showed off for trade. But i was pleasantly surprised that many had team 8 members, and they do being traded. Some sets i've never seen before were very nice and it was very tempting to join the fray. But my dozen of picture weighted very light compared to everyone else, so i just walked by, watching. Wow, HKT matsuri kimono set is so good. The owner was angry that i took so much time contemplating them but being empty handed after all. In contrary to birthday comittee, Photo trader are super super busy so i didn't bother trying to start a conversation.
    The handshakes

I had a total of 12 handshakes, starting from slot 2 to slot 6 (one slot is worth 1h30). I had made all necessary preparations to balance my number of tickets/slots as i applied for round 1. Since i only buy one ticket, it's safe to say i could get everything i wanted in one shot. People who like to buy 9-10 tickets can't do so in round 1, so they have to wait round 2. I tried to put 2 popular+ 1 not popular per slots and play safe. Another thing that changed, is that they added a new Autograph event, where you are eligible of one try per handshake ticket to get an autograph from your oshimen. It's jackpot if you get it from 1 ticket, as a member usually take 20-30 seconds to write you something, and you can chat with her in the meantime. They are very caring to the member, and don't push her around when writing. But they show no mercy, kicking you out in standard handshakes. So enjoy it if you got one! Nonetheless to say, i lost everything, and sometimes people who had 10 tickets failed ten times in a row. The more popular the member is, the fewer chances you get. Seems logical.

As usual, there's kami-level queues like Mayu or Jurina. Five lanes in Zigzag before reaching the ticket checking counter, then 3 lanes in zigzag. it's 30+ min, not counting people who are buying 10+ tickets, sometimes 50 tickets. Adding the signing events, it really has altered my perception of waiting in line. I thought i was safe with only 3 people per slot, but i realized it was going to be a stressful day, praying to be in time to get on another member lane i wanted to meet. Also, this time i went for mid popular members so i knew what was coming.

Meru wore a short sleeves brown pull, showing off her pale white skin (beauty point in japan). Long hair with fringe match her perfectly.

I wanted to start things off relaxed, as i already saw meru once last year. Her lane was Okay, let's say 1 lanes+3 lanes. Pretty decent for a slot 2. I waited a bit to read the memo a japanese friend helped me write so i can say something interesting. This year was kind of hard for Meru; all spotlight went to Sakura and Haruppi, momemtum is for Nakomiku, she didn't got a Kennin in team 4 and with non-existent outside work compared to others front row HKT members (Mio, madoka, natsumi), she had it though. To be honest, even her rank (last undergirl) was a letdown as i was expecting her fanbase to have a surge of pride and push her nicely, but it was rather moderate. All in all, it was time to cheer her up. I wanted to talk about her relationship with Miona, as i like them both. And indirectly praised her that it was her that got me into Nogizaka Hori Miona.
Meru : Thank you for coming!
Me : Hello! Uhm... Miona... (searching for words)
Meru : Miona? Oh yes, yes i know her!
Me : I'm glad you and Miona are get along with each other.
Meru : Oh, thank you! please come back again!

Because of the beginner's baffling/freezing, i couldn't say "it is thanks to you that i like Miona now", i really felt that i ruined the moment due to lack of focus. Staff disturbs you with their **** "mamonaku desu" and with one of your favourite member staring at you, if you get lost in speech, it's over. The japanese was too hard to express and i felt frustrated. However, what i can say is that Meru is as beautiful as ever and i don't see any chubbiness at all. (some discussion about that happened in her thread, but to me it is case closed now). After some thoughts, i don't think i did that bad for ten seconds.

I'm gonna add a little corner called "eyes on", this is when i watch lanes next to the one i'm waiting into. Thanks to the new system, i really have good looks to neighbour members. (no curtains anymore!! yay)

Along with her "Lee" T-shirt, she was wearing a black cap. Nothing extravagant, yet efficient.
As a Tentoumou chu supporter, i was really excited to finally see Nagisa, my favourite in NMB. She has a nice idol background, already centering a b-side, a kennin in team 4, a sub-unit, and is a regular NMB senbatsu ( the hype is more on sutou ririka now though). What i know, is that she is loving magnet, having shuu and Ryoha clinging on her. She definitively has this big sister feeling giving others a sense of security. But when it comes to idol-fans relationship, how is it? I wanted to find out. Actually i didn't have good topic to bring (i didn't find the time to watch NMB new shows) so i came up with a standard, lame interaction.

    Nagisa : thanks for coming!
Me : Hello, Nagisa! I've come from France!
    Nagisa : Heh, really?
Me : Nagisa smile is the best in the world.
Nagisa : Ah, thank you! Bye bye!

TADA!!! No seriously, i might be the 10 000 000th person to say that, but i was out of option. Her lane wasn't that long and i had to figure out something quick. To be honest, her reaction was very standard, and so was my line, so i don't blame her at all. Actually i was happy to succeedly said what i wanted to say. Nagisa is probably settled as NMB front row, but when it comes to be a NMB representative in AKB single, that is another story. Anyway, congratulation for ranking this year's Sousenkyo!

Really, Ryoha doesn't want to help me upload a picture of her in handshake clothes.
I'm probably a regular of Ryoha's lane. She only had the 3 lanes after the check-up, but her fans are happy because she had uninterrupted lanes for today (last year, i was first in lane, no queue). I understand her handshake experience is not the best compared to others (miyamae Ami, Tani marika) but the girl is really lovely and i'm sure she care about people coming to see her even though she is kind of my pace. I wanted to be nostalgic, mentioning Rena, but considering my fail from Meru's, i chose a much easier line.

Me : Hello! I live in Tokyo, but i went to Toyota Stadium in Nagoya!
Ryoha : Really? thank you very much!
Me : Your performance of Utsukushii Inazuma ( Wcenter with Nao) was very kakkoi (cool)
Ryoha : *thumbs up* thanks ! it was really fun! Bye Bye!

Good experience, because i was able to pull difficult (for me) japanese, and i got understood. Reaction was nice because going to Nagoya is expensive, and she was grateful that people would do all the trip for SKE. Actually, i did went to SKE concert, but only had the 29th, so i technically didn't saw her performance of Utsukushii Inazuma, but friends told me it was really good so i used it for my ticket. If i had the time, i would have wanted to tell her my wish for her to be an "Ace that Rena can be proud of", because i know Rena is a sempai Ryoha hold dear with Sae, and linking her with Rena might have been a heartfelt moment. But well, bad japanese is bad japanese.

Cute was the theme for today. Heart-shaped hairpin, white shirt with short sleeves to make the coordinate fresh and light. Haruppi has always been good at fashion IMO.
3 years i've been following HKT, and 3 years i've been following Haruppi in her path to be an accomplished idol. We're far away from this "struggle" pinpointed on her CV, and i'm happy to see outside work (mainly photoshoot and gravure) finally kicking off for her. Also, being selected as part of majisuka cast and senbatsu of the new Asadora song, i do believe she's now in management little papers. Casting aside Sakura's own path to success (and stop comparing them), i'm plenty satisfied at how things are turning out for her, to the point i absolutely have no worries about senbatsu level next year, and would preferably reach rank 14. That being said, enumerate everything was impossible, and i opted to mention her appearance in Majisuka 5 (which i recommend warmly! Nice show.)

    Haruppi : thanks for coming!
Me : Hello! I've been watching Majisuka 5!
Haruppi : Really? Thank you very much
Me : *forgot my line*, ugh... i'm super tense!
Haruppi : *trying to look at my distressed face*
    Me : hum....Please don't loose to Sakura!
Haruppi : Hai! Thank you! Please come again ~

I was supposed to say " I'm looking forward Katsuzetsu appearance in next episode", but the fear to fail took the best of me, and ended up ruining the moment. i saved the handshake talking about Sakura, but it was frustrating. Haruppi showed concern at my fail but gave me the brightest of smile telling me to "try again" (lol) next time. God is merciful for those who are try-harding like me it seems. Strange, because my first handshake went much more smoothly. S*** happens.

Nako was wearing flawless wool black sweater that made her look like a role-model child, first of her class.
The Nako that i have in mind is the one in variety show. Talks a lot, laughs a lot, makes jokes and gag, cheerful and always smiling. Sometimes she can be a crybaby, but who isn't at her age? I think she's cute and adorable, and has everything in her idol DNA to succeed with her character as strength. To be honest i was perplexed at her not ranking with Miku in sousenkyo, and i am even more, looking at her lane. 2+3 lines, had to wait 20 min+. If people keeps coming back, it means she's a nice girl, no?

Nako : Thank you for coming (almost bow??)
Me : Hello Nako, i've come from France!
Nako : Wow, really? *big eyes*
Me : Yappari, you have grown up a lot, haven't you? You look like an adult!
Nako : Nako? * pointing herself* Yatta! Thank you!

Not what i was expecting. But absolutely not in a bad way! She gave me a very mature feeling, very elegant. She is much much taller than in her debut. Her reactions are calm and composed. She has now the age of Meru when she debuted, and i didn't realized how grown up she has become. I'm being fond of Nako even more, and will surely vote for her next year. It is necessary for idols to see their efforts being rewarded. I want to acknowledge her growth in the right direction. This maturity is also welcomed as i'm more eager to let Maria get labelled as Loli of the group. (she's not as cute as Nako IMO)

Absolutely stunning crimson red dress, with pearl earrings and perfect brushing. It's like encountering a doubly shiny pokemon. Sparkling is an euphemism.

I don't have a favourite in particular in AKB. But after reading praise on Naachan and as a tentoumouchu member, she grew up on me a lot. Her kind, majime character is actually unique in AKB group and she is an excellent performer. Last time i already wanted to try seeing her but resales didn't gave me any chance. Now's the time for one ticket.
3 lanes + 3 lanes, 1 lane more than Kojimako, 3 lanes bigger than Mikichan. She was in my "slot of the death"(4 popular members) and i was hoping to buy some time pre-laning. Unfortunately, even if you pre-lane, you start moving at the beginning of your slot.
Me : Hello! I came from France!
Nana : Woah that's incredible *grabs my hand tightly*
Me : trying to say something in japanese *You are very popular abroad. lot of foreign fans like you.*
Nana : Really? I'm so happy, thank you for coming! (in english)

The only one who answered in english. Sasuga Naachan! Also, when i tried to say my line, she stopped talking and listened carefully at what i said, like she understood i was struggling speaking decent japanese. I did notice this attention, and it was really sweet! She really has an aura of a princess. Her bright red dress allowed me to take a good look at her, very memorable. Great handshake experience, will come again. She lived up her praise 100%!

While Nako is the cheerful type, Miku was labelled the beauty/Mature type. What now?

As you may know, The concept of one fan/one oshimen is very strong in AKB group, but management often promote pairing, to make things spicier and emphasis friendship. Or maybe it is the girls themselves? In AKB history, we had Atsumina, Kojima haruna/Shinoda mariko, Twin towers, and on a smaller scale, MeruMio, or Mion/Nannya. Nakomiku is the same. they were heavily promoted as cute loli from third gen and HKT fanbase quickly started being fond of the pair. While we're never sure it's genuine or just "business" relationship, My opinion of Nakomiku is very high as i think they both have good chemistry. Their opposite character complete each other. I know Nako better than Miku, but Miku's beauty can't be denied and i'm sure she will lead HKT group of beauty in the near future.

Miku : Thank you for coming!
Me : Hello Miku, i've come from France.
Miku : Ooh *nodding her head*
Me : you've got taller, haven't you? *makes the move of my hand raising and defining her height*
Miku : Yes! i got 4 cm taller! Bye bye!

I can't help but feel great similarities between the two now, as both are giving me the same mature vibe. I stopped myself at their beginning, (cute and small) but their elegant, smooth response made me realize they are completely different person now. Still adorable and cute, of course, but now you can add pretty and elegant. And i love it. Can't wait to see the pair grow even more. Isn't it what AKB is all about? To see your idols grow? HKT future looks bright.

What to expect from the most hyped, pushed, labelled "new gen Ace"? Soon entering the 100k vote club?

Her journey is close to perfect. She got the push, she got the fanbase. A momemtum that doesn't look to falter. She reached such level it's hard for old HKT fans to see her as HKT48 Miyawaki Sakura, and not AKB group Ace Miyawaki Sakura. It's like, hearing about a cousin you were very close during your youth, accomplishing great things like graduating from top college or becoming a celebrity. So close yet so far. Compared to Haruppi, which i feel close through her modest past, truth is i've never felt the same with Sakura. At best, i wave at her aimlessly during concert, resigned that she will never lay eyes on me. With the same state of mind, i applied to one handshake without big hopes (she's only second to Sayanee in handshakes). And i won.

Sakura : Thank you for coming!
Me : Hello Sakura! *take her hands*
Staff : MAMONAKU DESU (almost time)
    Me : Eh, what? Wtf????
    Staff : JIKAN DESU
Me , panicking : Euh... DAISUKI DESU?? ( taking the same tone as the staff)
    Sakura : *laugh at me*
Me, smiling awkwardly : Mmrrggglll (literally blabbling, japanese couldn't come out as staff was pushing me away)
Sakura : *laugh at me again loudly*

So, looks like Kami 7 members have a special ability. Handshake time crunching. I was ready for my speech, but those agressive MAMONAKU desu put me completely off-guard, and i end up failing big time. Yet, i got the best reaction? Sakura's laugh. The same giggle when Annya is doing a lame joke or when she failed her kibouteki refrain choregraphy. The cutest laugh, like she was being relieved of one hour of serious talk. But man, i got barely 7 seconds, minus 3 seconds i didn't know what to do due in panic mode. But Sakura made up for that, and her honest reaction made me find that natural feeling i was seeking in her. Despite being slot 5, she was still lively so i really thank her for that.

Okapan is gaining momemtum since her rank in sousenkyo. And make good use of it.

Maybe the least known HKT members i've went to, and still fairly popular! 1 lane + 3 lanes. I decided to apply for her as i absolutely wanted to congratulate her for her Sousenkyo rank. Yes it is outdated, but since i come from abroad, it's hard to come anytime we want. Anyway, Okapan has been away for many months from theater due to injuring her arm joint, but it didn't stop her popularity at all. Her lively performance and pretty face quickly made her a fan favourite. Actually she is even more pretty in reality than her already pretty G+ pictures. She has adorable gimmicks that melts people on her lane (faking a death stare, acting tsundere, wink at you). It was slot 6 and after hours and hours standing up, i tilted a little bit and went off my prepared speech.

Okapan : thank you for coming!
Me : Hello Okapan! I've come from France!
    Okapan : Furansu? Honto? (really?)
Me : honto desu! On peut continuer la conversation en Francais, pas de problème (saying quickly in French)
    Okapan : Woah, Sugoi!
Me : Congratulation for your Sousenkyo Ranking! Bye Bye!
Okapan : Woah, Furansu....*looking far away*

She was the most surprised of all that i was a foreigner. It was funny to witness! She has a wide variety of reaction on her sleeves, and i can see her popularity in handshake grows even more. Actually i wanted to tell her i was confident in her entering next single senbatsu, but i was very tired and said what went through my mind. She is also very, very pretty; i got an halloween night picture of her and intend to keep it. If there's a beauty group in HKT, she's definitively in.

Another HKT member getting quite the momemtum. TOTTADO!!
Anyone who watched the sousenkyo knows the girl with the mirror. Staged or genuine, it doesn't even matter at this point. Her move was truly a genius moment of comedy, interacting with the host MC and accidentally involving even Yuihan. Actually the sousenkyo wasn't the turning point but a consequence of Jiina rise in power. She was already starting to appear in HKT main shows (Odekake, Hyakkaten 3) and got chosen as senbatsu for last 2 single. To be honest, she was rather shy and plain at the beginning of HKT second generation debut, but she now has definitively bloomed into someone capable of juggling between beauty persona (narcissism) and pun-maker/variety enthusiast. What really changed, is her beauty. I do remember watching her first profile picture.... meh. But now, looking at her in real life..... woah!

Jiina : Thank you for coming!
Me : Jiina! Congratulation for your ranking in sousenkyo! I'm so happy!
Jiina : Really? thank you! i'm happy too!
Me : Yappari, you turned into a real beauty, right?
Jiina , *pointing her 2 fingers on her cheeks* : Really? thank you! Kao wa daijobou? (how's my face?)
Me : Iitomo! ( good, of course!)

Actually, the fan before me used 10 tickets so i had plenty of time to observe Jiina in close-up. I tried to not look like a creep, watching from time to time Okapan who was sitting on the right. But wow, Jiina is tall, thin, has long and slender hair and makes a standard dress look marvelous when she's wearing it. I'm sold! The gap between her beauty and her capability to make peoples laugh is becoming more and more her strong point . I firmly believe we have yet to stop hearing about Jiina. Since Hyakkaten, claiming she wants to free herself from Narcissist persona, she kind of broke her limiter. Release your true potential, Jiina!

2 unused Watanabe Milky's ticket. What happened?????
2000 yens wasted you would say. If only it was that alone. It's certainly because i missed the opportunity to meet Milky, one of the brightest smile of AKB group and master fisher. Also, there's no certitude to come back and be able to see her. I mean, maybe she will graduate? Maybe my job won't allow me to go back in japan at the right schedule? The only memories i will have of her is a glimpse of her smile during Nagisa's line...

As i said before, slot 5 was the slot of death. See by yourselves : Okada Nana, Tanaka Miku, Miyawaki Sakura, Watanabe Milky. Just lol. "Où avais je la tête?" (What went through my mind that time?) Clearly a misscalculation from me when doing lottery application. I was probably hoping Miku wasn't that packed and to pre-queue someone would do the trick for this tight schedule. Not only a prequeue start on time (and not before) but also a slots close 30 min before the actual ending of the slots, to avoid flood on schedule. Okada nana and Miku took me 1h to complete, and i was running to Sakura's lane before the fateful closure of her lane. Fortunately, i made it. But it was out of question i could attend Milky. I had to make a choice between Sakura and Milky, and the choice was obvious as i still had slot 6 to meet her. However....

I wanted to play safe, and pre-queue for Okada Kanna early in slot 6. That way, i quickly do the mid popular HKT members of slot 6 (Jiina and Okapan) to book milky's line. That was the plan. I was just in front of the ticket desk... but the lane didn't move. No one was going past the reception desk, and no one was leaving Okapan booth. Just what happened? I thought she went to see disabled fans, but it was quite opaque, and staff were silent.

I arrived at 16h10 at the lane. And waited for one hour. ONE HOUR??? moreover, in Okapan lanes? It was crazy, something must have happened, and i was really loosing my temper, realizing i was going to loose Milky once again/ And this time, it wasn't my fault. I really wanted to complain at the desk, but no japanese fans stumbled at all. Like waiting for one hour in okapan lane is normal? Hell no. I was soo frustrated. And NMB staff don't give a damn if there was a problem in HKT side. So i couldn't do a thing. Complain wouldn't have changed anything. I was scared that my anger would negatively influence my handshake experience (fortunately it wasn't the case), but since i got out of Okapan's line at 17h20 (line close at 17h30) i was once again put in a tight spot. As an HKT fan, i had to choose Jiina. But my heart was broken. *use my HKT towel to wipe my tears* And then, my last ticket for the day was gone.

    Conclusion

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
Even after 6 hours of handshake, resilient wota kept trading their AKB sets in a busy atmosphere

My legs were numb, my throat dried, no battery on phone and sweating like a bear (i had a sweater to cover that in handshake). But beyond being physically down, i was very frustrated to have come all the way to miss a chance to see one girl ( i wanted to be fished, for god sake! And twice!) . When you're loosing an application, you would say "c'est la vie" (that's life) but this time, your brain keep telling you again and again that by queuing for Milky first, you would have been able to meet everyone. And it hurts.

One thing positive, is that everyone made me a good/great impression. No disappointement whatsoever, everyone were lovely and caring. Makes me like HKT48 even more; we often get labelled as a loli group, but truth is that we are steadily graduating from that (proven via handshakes) and many members are building strong personallities to sustain the group growth. Handshake events is, and will always be, a must-do experience when you are a AKB group fan, as you often feel a real connection between fan and their idols. I'm sorry to have skipped the fan-to-fan relationship corner due to lack of time, but what i can say is that AKB fans are as much cosmopolite as ever ( male, female, kids, salaryman, cosplayer?)

Aside from the milky tragedy, it was still a great experience to me, and i still feel blessed to see the girls i'm rooting for since 3 years. And i hope you will have the opportunity too. To make up for my sadness, i went to a Karaoke in Akihabara with friends and butchered AKB songs like Oogoe diamond, Heavy rotation, and Pareo wa emerald. It helps relieve the stress! Japan sure is a fun country. I will probably won't be able to attend 2-shots event in February, but if you hesitate, go for it!

I'm sorry, Milky. Please don't graduate before i come back! Onegai!
    thanks for reading!

9/6 AKB Halloween Night Kobetsu HS/Sign Event @ Makuhari Messe

Kind of like previously what they did in Kibouteki Refrain, but this time they offered chance of receiving an autograph for all members. As was intended, this really did boost sales number which also attracted a tad more warm bodies to the venue than usual. Just like in Kibouteki Refrain, members with less than 5 slots a day have a whole lot higher chance to win their autograph. It's approx 23-25% win-rate and as for members with 5 slots a day theirs' were significantly lower at around 4% or so. They also changed up the lotto system this time upgrading from tabs to some app on an Ipad.

They basically gave you 4 buttons and you press one and it will tell you if you got a normal HS or Autograph. Initially I thought this made sense especially with members 5 slots or less, because the win-rate was always around 1/4 which is the case here with 4 buttons. Oddly enough though it's still the same for full day members which really threw me off how the system actually works. The only way I can think of ( of course this is all just theorizing) is that they've pre-selected 4 doors for you, and in a sense it may and may not have mattered at all which door you picked because perhaps there was nothing behind all 4 doors that was presented to you. This new system is a lot more efficient in terms of cost and speed but I felt it wasn't as exciting as when they had tabs. Tabs gave you this false sense of control to up your chance, like you could pick the tabs on top of the pile..under...behind, whatever. Regardless, I didn't win anything as pretty much all the members I saw was 5 slots except for Shu I think.

MR: Ah! I remember you. (She always says it as in " Don't worry, I remember you" )
ME: I'm returning back to Canada next week. This (handshake) might be the last one.
    MR: Eh?.......Really? I'm sad :(...........I don't want it!! *pouts*
    ME: :/
    MR: Seriously??
    ME: .....I'm Kiddinggggg!!! lolll ;)
MR: Ehhhhhh lolll. I was surprised! Thank goodness~~
Me: Is there something you want? loll. Like souvenirs or whatever.
    MR: Hrmmmm. Maple!
ME: You mean like Maple Syrup or w/e?
    MR: Yea!
ME: Eh, but that's not allowed. (You can't give edibles to them)
MR: Ah, that's right. You can't give that~ Ehhh, what are there?? lol
    ME: I don't know lollll.
    MR: Then...mmmm..a bear! lol
ME: What? lol ( didn't quite hear what she said )
    MR: A bear plush!!
ME: A bear plush? loll, Ok.

Conclusion: I wanted to loop her several times with the tickets I had but the queues were all so long and slow because of the sign event I couldn't even if I wanted to.

    ME: Hey!!
SY: Ah! Long time no see!
ME: You can't see today right? lol (In the morning she tweeted she forgot her contact lens and was worried not able to see faces)
SY: No, I.... *interrupted by me*
ME: Thennn..How about now! loll *suddenly moves my face closer to her's*
SY: Come on, I can see! I can see ! lolll
ME: *both OJS and the staff had their hands on my shoulders kinda give me a short warning that's close enough lol* OK! loll
SY: See, Parka! *points to the parka I'm wearing* (I was wearing the parka that she modeled for, and she's trying to tell me "see I can see" lol)
    Me: mm.
SY: Me? Me? *keeps pointing to herself* ( I had no clue what she's trying to say, perhaps asking if I was wearing it for her. Sometimes when they try to dumb their Japanese down for foreigner I find it even harder to understand because it's super broken Japanese)

Conclusion: Before I even queued for her I knew I was going to get warned for what I was about to do because of the OJS. Once you go to these events enough you remember most of the OJSs and know which ones are the more anal ones.

ME: I'm a person from Canada lol. Do you REALLY like fried chicken that much? lol
MY: Yes, I like it. Ai Labu ! *Thumbs up*
    ME: Ai Labu? loll
    OJS: No Puroburemu.
    ME: Eh? lollll.

Conclusion: This was those random tickets you get from time to time, I'm not really sure why I got it but there it is ! lol.
Very typical..1 ticket mediocre interaction. The OJS was random as hell jumping into the convo like that with Engrish loll.

    MK: Ahhhhhhhh!
ME: That's right, that's right. Small Oppai-san is here lol.
    MK: mm, small Oppai-san!
    ME: Hrm? lol
MK: Small Oppai! Small Oppai!! [hehe] *keeps pointing at my chest*
ME: Speaking of which, Mirukii's outfit today is really yabai lol.
    MK: Hrm?
ME: *points to her outfit while covering part of my face*
MK: Hrmmm~~~? <3 *kinda pushes her chest together*
    ME: LOLLL YABAIII!!!!

Conclusion: I thought I had 2 tickets for her today but I only had one. I was going to give her an early birthday wish but she kinda controls the pacing of her HS all the time and that really makes you forget what you want to say lol.

Conclusion: This was probably 1 of the shortest HS report I've written, yay? lol. It was a super chill day for me so for once the day didn't end making me feel like crap. I wished I could've brought home some autograph but I didn't really have much expectations hence I didn't over buy this single anyway in the first place.

@Sakuraism Nice to read through your conversations with the girls as always. Entertaining and much more fun than the "Hi..I come from xxx country" repeatedly. The new system of picking a sign is interesting and thanks for clearing up that it isn't a 1 in 4 chance. Explains why Komi said, so few people won her sign (although committee members seem to have done so) and that it was rare this time.

Mmmh, i'm sorry to make boring handshakes. I also think saying the same thing is lame.

But to my defense, I don't speak japanese fluently. And when you have 10 seconds in front of someone that you like and support for many years, it's hard to be comfortable and say what you want. In my case, i did too complicated and had to switch to plan B.

Maybe work-out like crazy until February, become an ikemen, don't say a thing and get 2-shots is a better option lol.

@Li Li Well, I still think it's possible for members like Komi ( If I'm not wrong she has less than 5 slot?) to have system work with 1/4 chance. It's just the problem with that is it works as a double edged sword. You can either have a lot of winners than expected or a lot less, it all depends on the final sample size. In all honestly we just don't know how the system works at this point, since it's not as black and white like throwing in a bunch of winning tabs with the losing tabs and mix them all up on a tray/box lol.

Anyway I feel like I should say a few words on @gocchisama 's defense. I think sometimes it's essential to hear other types of HS reports even though if they may not be as "interesting" in terms of "contents"(it's really personal preference). Most people who reads this thread probably have never or rarely attend these events and being able to read reports also coming from fans within the same boat I think can sometimes be more of a useful reference. It helps them prepare the potential obstacles the other fans have experienced, so they aren't jumping into these event with the idea/expectations that, OH IMMA BE ABLE TO PULL A CONVO LIKE HE DID WITH MAACHUN.

@Sakuraism I think she did a 5 slot (or might have been a 4 slot) that day. I mean either method they can always 'fix' it as such, so we won't ever know the odds. I would have thought the more popular the member, the less chance there is to win one. Either way, I haven't seen any of the new signs on auction yet compared to last time, so in that regard it might be better!!

I once had a Sasshi handshake that went pretty much the same way.

Me: Takes Sasshi's hand "Hello Sashiko!"
    Guard: "Mamonaku!"
Me: "Ehhh?" Quickly tries to think of what to say
    Me: "
    ummm, errr..."
    Guard: Forcefully pushes me out
    Sasshi: "Okay, Bye Bye!"

I agree with @gocchisama, it's impossible to build a rapport with anyone in 10 seconds let alone when the two people aren't fluent in the same language. If I'm successful in attending a 2-shot early next year I'll just play it safe and learn a few words in Japanese to say each time. Maybe 9 out of 10 of the meetings will be exactly the same but there's always the possibility of one meeting being a little different and unexpectedly funny (as with @gocchisama and Sakura!). At least I've had some experience of meeting a major Japanese idol group, in my case it was Dempagumi.inc. Admittedly it was in London and I didn't have to say "I'm from England" to each member, however I felt I was able to fight any feelings of nervousness and just be myself, and just say simple things like "Hello" and "Arigatou gozaimasu, bye bye!". Nothing at all exciting but I still left with a feeling of walking on air. If I can do just that with AKB48/48G members then I'll be more than walking on air, I'll be in orbit!!! :)

Maybe this is common knowledge or I am just out of the loop but how the hell do you guys remember every line of a convo? Specially you guys with paragraphs of dialogue. Do you record the convo on your phones? There is no way all that stuff can be remembered.

This is absolutely true. It is hard to build total rapport with anyone in one day, let alone 10 seconds. This is why I caution anyone going for the first time from buying too many tickets. I know in the fan's head they have followed the member for years, but to the idol you are a complete stranger. However, rehearsing what you are going to say is a great idea. Especially if your Japanese is limited. Not that it will always go as planned, but at least you go in with at least one thing to say.

The difference is that this is Japan. When an idol group goes overseas they at least somewhat expect to be dealing with a language barrier. By now I think most of the girls are used to hang the occasional foreigner in their queue. Still, they can sometimes be caught off-guard. Depends on the member.

Most people are paraphrasing, and even slightly embellishing. Which is fine because we want to make the writeup entertaining. If you look at my writeups in this thread I usually paraphrase because as you said, it isn't possible to remember every single bit of dialogue. Of course sometimes the dialogue can be so memorable that it is impossible to forget. I will never forget Amina's "Eat me!", or Kaotan's "WHY WHY WHY???????? I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU!!!" Or Mikitty's "I love you Mister Chris, I need you Mister Chris! Mister Chris you come twice!!!" or Churi's "Papitan genki, Papitan cute!"

lol, well for longer conversations like Chris said it's mostly paraphrasing, although I usually spend a lot of time trying to paraphrase as accurately as what I can remember that was said. This is why writing these experiences takes longer than it looks, the writing itself is fast but it's recalling what was said exactly takes a good chunk of time.

As for like ones I just wrote which is pretty short, it's pretty much word for word because I usually tweet it out in Japanese the moment I finish the HS.

I actually have a different take from @Cristafari about this. To me, it's exactly because it's almost impossible to build any type of relationship on your first go that you SHOULD probably buy more tickets. Of course I'm not suggesting to over buy but have more than 1 ticket for you to fall on. ( 2 shot is diff, you barley talk neway )
With 1 ticket too many can go wrong and easily eat up that precious ticket you have with that member you really wanna talk with.
Also we all know that there many members that requires you to see them more than once for them to even warm up to you. With only 1 ticket, they may end up leaving a bad impression to you.

Of course this is coming from a guy who went to his first HS with 60-70 tickets. Perhaps that's all I know as a first timer lol.

Just to clarify, I don't mean you should only get one ticket. But I have seen people on their first go-round by 30-40 tickets for one member. To me that's a bit of overkill. It is akin to trying for romance, marriage and babies all on the first date. For lack of a better analogy [hehe] It's just that unless you have already created some sort of relationship with a member you aren't going to have THAT MUCH to say. And if you are not fluent in Japanese it will become 10x as awkward.

So yeah, definitely get multiple tickets. Just keep in mind that there is only so much relationship you can create in one day.

I only remember this stuff if I take it down on my phone right when I leave the lane. Hence my not writing a report for this one. I was too rushed to write anything down, and for certain members I can barely even remember the general outline of the conversation

I agree with both Andy & Chris, as first timer I would say, you need to find a balance to get the 'best/optimized' experience.
1 ticket could be really good or backfire, if you are not 'ready' or something happen on spot and makes you forget what you wanted to say (even if you rehearsing what you are going to say several times).

I remember that it happened to me when I went to meet Sahho by 1 ticket. She took a short break right before I walk in, Looking at me, drinking a bit of water and smiling at me (that was so cute)... that was totally unexpected from my side, and caught me off guard... made me totally forget what I wanted to say.
Especially if you are not confident with your Japanese, and/or let's say the girl ask you a question you didn't get, that will consume your precious time very quickly because you'll probably get stuck.
Or the opposite, she didn't get what you said and lean over for you to repeat and by the time you do, your ticket is gone maybe even without getting an answer to your question.

Also for some members the staff are really douche... I remember queuing for Takamina and several fans before me had only 1 ticket.
From my perspective, I saw them walk in, and the same thing happened to gocchisama, they held hands for like 1 or 2 sec., and I heard 'mamonaku desu', 'jikan desu'. I was like... oh WTF?! this is ridiculously fast.
I always try to check how the staff chrono, and that particular one, if you had 1 ticket, she started it when the previous guy walk off pretty much.

On the other hand, In general I go by 3 and recently during August HS I felt having several tickets a bit longer than usual. We used to assume that's around +-7 sec. per 1 ticket, therefore +-21sec. max for 3 at once.
But during my handshake in August, 3 tickets felt way longer than usual, I would say it was definitely 30sec. So maybe there is some recent changes in the management? I don't know... Maybe I was simply lucky? But to stack tickets did not seem as penalizing as before in my opinion, definitely better than 1 by 1.

Back to what Chris mentioned, 30-40 for the first time is overkill definitely except if you are fluent in Japanese and she is your oshi.
From my experience I would suggest 7-10 max at once. if you really have many many many things to say or a long story to tell...
Otherwise as Andy said, I agree that you need more than 1 and SHOULD get more as some members are not even 'warm up'. And the key is looping the queue!
    On average I spend 3-5 ticket/per member /slot.
I went to meet Sakura first time with 3 tickets, I split it to 1 & 2. First ticket was self intro, nothing interesting. Then loop back again with 2 other tickets.
She did remember me, lean over the table & fence to get really really close to me and only this made the whole experience 100x better. she ended up being my kamitaiou of the day.

    Conclusion: combo 1or2+2or3 recommended!

For my handshake event this year, I had a minimum of two tickets for nearly all of the girls for every slot (save Yukirin and random others).

I felt that using two tickets gave me more of an opportunity to make conversation and properly introduce myself and get them interested in you as well as spending longer focusing on them. If it was one ticket, I tried to introduce myself and compliment them in one sentence so they had an opportunity to give a good response.

As I'm not fluent in Japanese I knew that anything more than three tickets at once would probably destroy me, so I didn't bother. The only time I did that was because one of my absolute favourites was leaving and I had so much to say that I memorised beforehand.

But as a first handshake, and maybe even a second, I would stick to two tickets as my minimum for girls unless I just wanted to try them so one ticket would do or I liked them enough to warrant three. Until I'm more confident in my speaking ability that won't change either. For now, for me, it creates a good memorable meeting of conversation and a connection that can be built on the more I go back. :)

I second a recommendation to loop, especially for your oshi. Easier said than done for popular members, however.
