According to charts.youtube.com last year, South Korea only lost to Indonesia & Thailand as a country other than Japan that watched AKB48 MVs on YouTube but too bad YouTube changed the UI of charts.youtube.com removed the feature that shows which countries & cities watched the MVs of any artist the most

 

There is a following of sorts. Momusu, SNH48G, The 48G and LDH Girls fandoms are all existing within the country and lately we got the new Kaigai Idols/Jiha Idols which are kinda Chika Idols (Undergroud Idols) that are styled like JPOP groups. They even got calls and responses and the wota chant!
None have become mainstream yet but there is gonna be a survival show of them in the near future

 

The other big question being, could there be a company interested in managing it locally ?
