She is the daughter of Muto Daisuke, a former actor.
She is the older sister of Muto Orin. They also have a younger brother.
She is the oldest member in AKB48 12th Generation.
She has studied piano since she was 3 years old.
She was a member of her junior high school and high school dance clubs and is good at hip hop.
She fell in love with AKB48 after hearing 10nen Zakura.
Her name is a palindrome, reading as "Muto Tomu" forwards and backwards.
- She said she would like to meet SKE48's Imade Mai and NMB48's Kamieda Emika, because their names are palindromes too.
She has several pet goldfish and a beagle named Oguri.
Fellow members describe her as calm, mature, reliable in emergencies, and somewhat masculine. Her friend also described her as serious and "foolishly honest". Meanwhile, Tomu describes herself as shy and self-analyzing.
Oshima Yuko declared her favorite junior was Tomu because she was a hard worker.
- At the 6th Senbatsu Election, Tomu thanked Yuko for all her support.
She was one of the 50 winners of the Young Jump Gravure Competition.
She was a member of the unofficial Okashi Party unit with Maeda Ami, Furuhata Nao, and Fujita Nana.
She adores Omori Miyuu (TomuPon), saying Miyuu is cute like a dog.
She is also close with with Iwatate Saho (TomuSaho).
She was known for her good working relationship with Tano Yuka (TanoTomu) in AKB48 media.
She came in 2nd place in the last round voting for the audition held by Young Magazine and won a 1-year exclusive gravure contract with the magazine. Her first solo gravure under the contract was published on November 9, 2015.
She studied economics at Seijo University and completed her bachelors' degree in 2017. Then in March 2020 she completed her masters degree at the Seijo University Graduate School of Economics.
On April 7th, 2019 she passed the Japanese National Weather Forecaster Certification. This is a difficult test with an average pass rate of only 5.5%. She studied for over 1700 days.
From March 12th, 2020 to April 3rd, 2020 she serves as a regular weather forecaster on Abema TV's "Abema Morning" Friday weather corner.
She has earned a Financial Planner Certification.
She has earned a Disaster Prevention Expert Certification.
She likes manga, and her favorite is "Nonsatsu Junkie".

Muto Orin has said that Tomu reminds her of the Pokémon Purrloin.
Currently she, Yamamoto Sayaka, and Miyawaki Sakura are the only members who ranked in their first Senbatsu Election participation (Muto and Miyawaki in 2012, Yamamoto in 2011) and never experienced a decrease or total drop out of rank.

History

2011

In April, passed the auditions for AKB48's 12th Generation.
On May 5th, made her theater debut as a Zenza girl in Miniskirt no Yosei.
On May 22nd, had her first full performance in Theater no Megami, along with the rest of the 12th gen Kenkyuusei.

2012

On June 6th, at the 4th Senbatsu Election, placed 49th (Future Girls center). She was the only member of the 12th Generation to rank in.
On August 24th, during the first day of the AKB48 in TOKYO DOME ~1830m no Yume~ concerts, was promoted to Oshima Team K.

2013

On February 12th, appeared in the So long! Drama as a supporting character in the Team K drama.
On June 8th, at the 5th Senbatsu Election, rose to 49th place and made Next Girls.

2014

On February 24th, during the AKB48 Group Daisokaku Matsuri, was moved to Takahashi Team A.
On April 25th, was a shonichi member for the revival of Team A's Renai Kinshi Jourei stage.
On June 7th, at the 6th Senbatsu Election, rose to 24th place and made Undergirls.
On June 14th, appeared in the movie Lady Maiko (舞妓はレディ Maiko wa Lady) as Fukuha.
On November 26th, chosen for her first senbatsu for Kibouteki Refrain.

2015

Starting on January 19th, appeared in Majisuka Gakuen 4 as Tsun.
On March 26th, during the AKB48 Spring Shuffle 2015, moved to Minegishi Team K.
On June 6th, at the 7th Senbatsu Election, rose to 16th place and made Senbatsu for the first time.
On August 23rd, was a senshuuraku member for Team A's Renai Kinshi Jourei stage.

2018

Became a contestant on the Korean idol survival show Produce 48.
- Ranked in class D after the initial evaluation.
- Stayed in class D after the second evaluation.
- Performed GFriend's "Love Whisper" during the first performance round. Her position was sub-vocal 1. Her team lost.
- Performed Fitz and Tantrum's "Handclap" during the second performance round. She placed fifth within her team.
- Was eliminated in Episode 8 at 38th place with a total of 299,255 votes.
On June 16th, participated again in the 10th Senbatsu Election and made Kami 7 (7th) for the first time.
In December, it was announced that she would be the lead role in the movie "Okasan no Hibaku Piano" お母さんの被爆ピアノ), originally to be released in Summer 2019.

2019

On April 7th, passed the weather forecast test; the test had a pass rate of 5.5% and Tomu had been studying for "1700 days" (4.5 years) before finally passing.
From April 18th to 28th, appeared in the stage play Bakumatsu Taiyouden Gaiden (幕末太陽傳外伝) as Koharu.

2020

On February 2nd, appeared at the Japan Expo 2020 in Thailand.
On May 15th, the movie "Okasan no Hibaku Piano" was supposed to finally release but was postponed again due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On August 8th, "Okasan no Hibaku Piano" was released in cinemas nationwide.
Released on September 17th, appeared as a weather forecaster in the video game "Life After.

2021

Throughout April, was part of CM's for CHC.
On May 29th, attended an award ceremony after "Okasan no Hibaku Piano" received the 38th Japan Film Reconstruction Encouragement Award.
On July 15th, received a certificate for passing the 2nd Grade "Certified Skilled Professional of Financial Planning" exam.
On August 16th, announced her affiliation with the agency "Ikushima Planning Office."
On November 22nd, announced via twitter she would be appearing in the movie "Danshari Paradise" (断捨離パラダイス), with a planned release date for Fall 2022.

On April 19th, released her first photobook Tomu mo You. It sold 2,098 copies in its first week.
