* Former member of Shino-Club
+
* Her official nickname was "Maririn" in her early days as an AKB48 member.
+
* Her parents named her "Mariko" because they wanted a name that would be easy for non-Japanese people to say if they moved overseas. They chose it for being similar to "Marie" or "Mary".
+
* She has a brother one year older and a sister six years younger.
+
* Her father was a Coast Guard officer of the Japan Coast Guard with a rank of 3rd Class Superintendent. For this reason she moved often as a child and frequently transferred schools.
+
** When she was in elementary school she lived in Tsushima City on Tsushima Island, Nagasaki Prefecture.
+
** When she was in high school she lived in Fukuoka and attended Fukuoka Prefectural Itoshima High School.
+
* She did many extracurricular activities growing up such as abacus, violin, piano, ballet, dance, rhythmic gymnastics, and kendo.
+
* She played tennis for 6 years from middle school to high school.
+
* She did not have any particular ambitions as a high school student. She spent most of her time at home and only considered enrolling in vocational schools.
+
* She moved to Tokyo on her own in 2005.
+
* She failed the AKB48 1st Generation auditions. However, she did not want to return to Fukuoka and was offered a part-time job at the AKB48 theater café instead. She became a hot topic among café customers, who said that she was cute and wrote to Akimoto Yasushi requesting for her to be allowed to audition.
+
** She had been very confident that she would pass the original 1st Generation members audition. After she failed she was embarrassed, and she even told customers at the café that she had simply missed the original audition date, not that she had failed.
+
** Akimoto saw how popular she was with fans and offered her a position in the group. He told her of the offer while she was preparing an ice cream sundae for a customer. She agreed to join, and was given four days to learn the Team A 1st Stage choreography. She debuted on January 22nd, 2006 during a Team A theater show.
+
* She is known for her love of Hamtaro and the song Koike from Team A's 3rd Stage.
+
* She was known to have a cool and mature character. She also often teased members and staff, who called her "sadistic".
+
** Her character in Majisuka Gakuen was named "Sado" because of this.
+
** A line in her A-side center song Ue Kara Mariko goes “Mariko high and mighty, you sadistic girl!”.
+
** However, fellow members described her as caring and thoughtful backstage. Nakamura Mariko said that Mariko once bought beef bentos for the kenkyuusei. Miyazawa Sae said that Mariko always gave her positive and helpful advice.
+
* She was known for her "air ocarina" gag, where she would pretend to play the ocarina. She had purchased an ocarina when she was younger because she liked the Ghibli movie Laputa: Castle in the Sky, but put it up for auction before learning to play.
+
* On October 13th, 2007 she injured her leg before a Team A theater show. She could not participate, but instead decided to work that one night as a member of the theater café staff.
+
* She became an exclusive model for "MORE" magazine in July 2008.
+
* During AKB48's rise to fame in 2009-2011, she was known as the AKB48 member with the most solo activities. She appeared regularly on more than 10 TV programs. In the first half of 2010 alone she appeared in 40 magazines and made over 160 TV appearances.
+
** She appeared on many horse racing programs during this time such as "Uma Pro" and gained notoriety with the general public. She was also active as a model and fashion icon.
+
** By June 2009 her private blog reached 600,000 hits per day.
+
* Despite their large age gap, she became friends with Matsui Jurina during the filming of the Oogoe Diamond music video. Mariko felt bad for Jurina, as Jurina was the only SKE48 member among the AKB48 Senbatsu. Mariko said it reminded her of how she had joined Team A later than the other 1st Generation members.
+
** Jurina's solo photograph cover of the Oogoe Diamond CD pictures her shouting. She shared that she was shouting "Mariko-sama!" at the time.
+
* In February 2010 she was involved in a defamation lawsuit. Shukan Bunshun magazine had alleged that Mariko was in a relationship with Kubota Yasushi, the president of AKS. The rumors were untrue and AKS eventually won the lawsuit in September 2013.
+
* On March 30, 2012 she became the first 48 Group member to reach 1 million followers on Twitter.
+
* In 2012 she had the 4th most followers on Twitter among Japanese Twitter users.

* In August 2022, several news outlets reported that Mariko had split from her husband. For a few months, both Mariko and her husband denied any rumors and avoided talking to the press. By December 2022, audio recordings (taken by the husband) were leaked online during a divorce trial. In March 2023, Mariko officially announced her divorce. In April 2023, she deleted all the Youtube featuring her daughter Mei, citing the reason that she felt the way she was going about parenthood was more in line with pleasing an audience than to focus on her child, and she wanted to focus on her child over the audience.

AKB48 Senbatsu Elections
While most of the members of AKB48 were selected through auditions, Shinoda Mariko is so far the only exception. Before joining, she worked part-time in the café on the same floor as the AKB48 theater. Having intended to audition for the group, she unfortunately had to work on the date of her audition and was thus unable to attend.

She shared this story with customers at work as little more than a talking point, and was surprised when hundreds of them wrote to Akimoto Yasushi requesting that she be allowed to audition. Presumably realizing that she came with a pre-prepared fan base, Akimoto allowed her to join the group as the most recent member of Team A just three months before Team K was formed.

It is for this reason that she is not present in the DVD of Team A's first stage but can be seen in the PV to the single Skirt, Hirari; the first she participated in, unlike the rest of Team A who had all previously participated in the single Sakura no Hanabiratachi.
+
Team History
+
:Team A → Graduation
It was not long after joining that Shinoda began to exhibit her potential and improved rapidly - while it had seemed that Akimoto had chosen his consistent leads in Skirt, Hirari as Sukahira Seven and intended to stick with them, over time he appears to have changed his mind and pushed Shinoda to the group's forefront in place of Narita Risa.
+
:: Joined AKB48 as a Team A member on January 22, 2006

+
:: Graduated from AKB48 Team A on July 22, 2013 (Announcement: June 8, 2013 at 5th Senbatsu Sousenkyo | Last handshake event: July 7, 2013 | Graduation Ceremony: July 21, 2013 at Fukuoka Yahoo Auction Dome)
Shinoda is perhaps most widely known for her love of Hamtaro, and the song Koike from Team A's third stage, in which she took all of the speaking parts along with a lead singing role. While the addition of Team B has resulted in some shifts in the leads of AKB48 in general, Shinoda has remained close to the forefront for every single to date, and seems set to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

  • Former member of Shino-Club
  • Her official nickname was "Maririn" in her early days as an AKB48 member.
  • Her parents named her "Mariko" because they wanted a name that would be easy for non-Japanese people to say if they moved overseas. They chose it for being similar to "Marie" or "Mary".
  • She has a brother one year older and a sister six years younger.
  • Her father was a Coast Guard officer of the Japan Coast Guard with a rank of 3rd Class Superintendent. For this reason she moved often as a child and frequently transferred schools.
    • When she was in elementary school she lived in Tsushima City on Tsushima Island, Nagasaki Prefecture.
    • When she was in high school she lived in Fukuoka and attended Fukuoka Prefectural Itoshima High School.
  • She did many extracurricular activities growing up such as abacus, violin, piano, ballet, dance, rhythmic gymnastics, and kendo.
  • She played tennis for 6 years from middle school to high school.
  • She did not have any particular ambitions as a high school student. She spent most of her time at home and only considered enrolling in vocational schools.
  • She moved to Tokyo on her own in 2005.
  • She failed the AKB48 1st Generation auditions. However, she did not want to return to Fukuoka and was offered a part-time job at the AKB48 theater café instead. She became a hot topic among café customers, who said that she was cute and wrote to Akimoto Yasushi requesting for her to be allowed to audition.
    • She had been very confident that she would pass the original 1st Generation members audition. After she failed she was embarrassed, and she even told customers at the café that she had simply missed the original audition date, not that she had failed.
    • Akimoto saw how popular she was with fans and offered her a position in the group. He told her of the offer while she was preparing an ice cream sundae for a customer. She agreed to join, and was given four days to learn the Team A 1st Stage choreography. She debuted on January 22nd, 2006 during a Team A theater show.
  • She is known for her love of Hamtaro and the song Koike from Team A's 3rd Stage.
  • She was known to have a cool and mature character. She also often teased members and staff, who called her "sadistic".
    • Her character in Majisuka Gakuen was named "Sado" because of this.
    • A line in her A-side center song Ue Kara Mariko goes “Mariko high and mighty, you sadistic girl!”.
    • However, fellow members described her as caring and thoughtful backstage. Nakamura Mariko said that Mariko once bought beef bentos for the kenkyuusei. Miyazawa Sae said that Mariko always gave her positive and helpful advice.
  • She was known for her "air ocarina" gag, where she would pretend to play the ocarina. She had purchased an ocarina when she was younger because she liked the Ghibli movie Laputa: Castle in the Sky, but put it up for auction before learning to play.
  • On October 13th, 2007 she injured her leg before a Team A theater show. She could not participate, but instead decided to work that one night as a member of the theater café staff.
  • She became an exclusive model for "MORE" magazine in July 2008.
  • During AKB48's rise to fame in 2009-2011, she was known as the AKB48 member with the most solo activities. She appeared regularly on more than 10 TV programs. In the first half of 2010 alone she appeared in 40 magazines and made over 160 TV appearances.
    • She appeared on many horse racing programs during this time such as "Uma Pro" and gained notoriety with the general public. She was also active as a model and fashion icon.
    • By June 2009 her private blog reached 600,000 hits per day.
  • Despite their large age gap, she became friends with Matsui Jurina during the filming of the Oogoe Diamond music video. Mariko felt bad for Jurina, as Jurina was the only SKE48 member among the AKB48 Senbatsu. Mariko said it reminded her of how she had joined Team A later than the other 1st Generation members.
    • Jurina's solo photograph cover of the Oogoe Diamond CD pictures her shouting. She shared that she was shouting "Mariko-sama!" at the time.
  • In February 2010 she was involved in a defamation lawsuit. Shukan Bunshun magazine had alleged that Mariko was in a relationship with Kubota Yasushi, the president of AKS. The rumors were untrue and AKS eventually won the lawsuit in September 2013.
  • On March 30, 2012 she became the first 48 Group member to reach 1 million followers on Twitter.
  • In 2012 she had the 4th most followers on Twitter among Japanese Twitter users.
  • In October 2012 she announced her own fashion brand, "ricori". ricori was developed alongside Double Wear Co., Ltd. and aimed at women in their 20s and 30s.
    • She stepped down as an advisor in late 2013. She walked as a fashion model for the brand in March 2014, but cut financial ties. The brand, which was then operated by Rigore Co., Ltd., eventually ended in July 2014.
  • She has two pet Maltese dogs who have their own Instagram.
  • She is friends with actress Toda Erika. After co-starring in a drama together they began to meet up often.

  • She is a fan of baseball. Her favorite professional team is the Yomiuri Giants, and she particularly likes watching high school baseball.
  • She is very afraid of haunted houses, as shown in Shukan AKB episode 6.
  • She owns her own car, a Nissan Elgrand.
  • She enjoys cooking and posts her meals on her social media.
  • She speaks in Fukuoka dialect when talking to friends from her hometown, but otherwise does not use it.
  • On February 16, 2019 she married a man working in the business industry, just a few months after they started dating.
  • On April 1, 2020 she gave birth to a girl and named her "Mei" and started a Youtube channel about motherhood.
  • On May 6th, 2021, won the Japan Mothers Association's the 13th Best Mother Award 2021.
  • In August 2022, several news outlets reported that Mariko had split from her husband.
  • She has opened an online shop for children goods: yoyako.
