  • She has 2 older sisters.
  • Her name was thought of by her grandmother, who wants her to grow up as quickly as a hemp (麻) and to make great friends (友).
    • Her nickname was thought of by Yonezawa Rumi, who first used it in a text message to her.
  • She was a cheerful child up until elementary school. When she entered kindergarten she became shy, and even refused to attend school. Her parents let her stay home and watch educational programs instead. After her teacher and classmates wrote her a letter saying "everyone is waiting for you", Mayu became encouraged to return. She had no problems attending kindergarten after that.
  • She was in the wind instruments club at her school and played euphonium. She was also on the school health committee.
  • She was a good student in junior high school and achieved almost perfect marks. She said that in the periods before exams she studied six to seven hours a day until 3 a.m. after she got home.
  • She first learned about AKB48 in 6th grade of elementary school when surfing the internet. She wasn't a fan of idols at the time, but she was interested in AKB48. She visited the AKB48 website often, bought the indie debut album Sakura no Hanabiratachi, and even attended a Team K theater show.
  • She injured her leg just two days after the Team B 1st Stage began. It was thought that she had a fissure fracture, but fortunately only the blood vessels were affected. She had to take several weeks off, and was so frustrated by the injury that she cried.
  • Akimoto Yasushi once commented that she was born for the sake of being an idol. In the early years of her career she was called "CG" or "cyborg" due to her classic, orthodox idol appearance. However, the nickname became less common as she grew older and her personality changed.
    • A notable turning point was the year 2012, when she stopped wearing her hair in her signature twintail style. Until then she had been very particular about her hairstyle and and took great care setting her bangs. Kikuchi Ayaka once shared that Mayu would take up to two hours to set her bangs, and Nakagawa Haruka joked that "if you touch Mayu's bangs, you will be killed."
  • She was known for having a high level of professionalism and enthusiasm about being an idol, to the point that she was described as a perfectionist.
  • She wears contact lenses, and has glasses as well. In her early days as an AKB48 member she showed her glasses were a deep red color.

  • She likes to watch figure skating.
  • Originally she was chosen as one of the Centers for AKB48's 28th single UZA along with Matsui Jurina, but because she had trouble learning the choreography, her center position was given to Oshima Yuko.
  • She began taking professional vocal lessons to prepare for her fifth solo single, Deai no Tsuzuki.
  • She announced her retirement from the entertainment industry on June 1, 2020.
