Love Ban and rules

AKB48, Nogizaka46, SNH48, and their respective sister groups all share established rules regarding members' behavior and conduct. The most famous of these rules is the Love Ban (恋愛禁止 Ren'ai Kinshi), also referred to as the "Dating Ban" or the "Golden Rule". This is a traditional rule among idols to not have romantic relationships during their time as idols. Many other idols, both in and outside of Japan, follow similar rules.

Other group rules include prohibiting smoking, underaged drinking, drug use, contacting fans privately, or public actions that reflect negatively on the group.

Other rules

These rules are not enforced across all groups.

• Prohibition of members dyeing their hair without the company permission.
  • In AKB48 this rule was enforced in 2016, where it affected Kizaki Yuria, Kojima Mako, and Oshima Ryoka. Throughout AKB48's history many members have dyed hair, and the enforcement of this ban has been inconsistent.
  • In SKE48 and NMB48, members of both groups have reported that there is a ban on dyeing hair without company permission. Additionally, SKE48 Kenkyuusei have reported that for the first six months of their career they are required to style their hair in the style they chose for their debut photo (hair down, ponytail, pigtails, etc).
  • In SNH48 it was confirmed that a ban on hair dye was included in the 2nd generation Members' contract.
• In Nogizaka46 members are banned from nail art and gel nails.
• In SNH48 Group, the members are not allowed to stream through third party applications other than Pocket48.
