The 48 Groups, Sakamichi Series, SNH48 Group all share established rules regarding members' behavior and conduct. These rules include prohibiting smoking, underaged drinking, drug use, contacting fans privately, or public actions that reflect negatively on the group.
In the Japanese idol industry, many groups have historically enforced a Love Ban (恋愛禁止 Ren'ai Kinshi), also referred to as the "Dating Ban" or the "Golden Rule". This is a traditional rule among idols to not have romantic relationships during their time as idols. Many other idols, both in and outside of Japan, follow similar rules.
The Love Ban has been enforced differently across the groups. In August 2023, Kashiwagi Yuki stated that AKB48 does not have a Love Ban. However, former SKE48 3rd Generation members Matsumura Kaori and Goto Risako have confirmed that a ban on dating was written in their contracts. This suggests that the formality of the Love Ban varies from group to group, and its formality may have changed throughout the years.
Other rules
These rules are not enforced across all groups.
- Prohibition of members dyeing their hair without company permission.
- In AKB48 this rule was enforced in 2016, where it affected Kizaki Yuria, Kojima Mako, and Oshima Ryoka. However, throughout AKB48's history many members have dyed hair, and the enforcement of this ban has been inconsistent. Honda Hitomi, Otake Hitomi and Okada Nana are members who dyed their hair frequently, especially after 2020.
- In SKE48 and NMB48, members of both groups have reported that there is a ban on dyeing hair without company permission. Additionally, SKE48 Kenkyuusei have reported that for the first six months of their career they are required to style their hair in the style they chose for their debut photo (hair down, ponytail, pigtails, etc.).
- In SNH48 it was confirmed that a ban on hair dye was included in the 2nd generation Members' contract.
- In 2019, according to Qiao YuZhen, CKG48 members were not allowed to dye their hair and were not allowed to bring beauty accessories to stage performances.
- In Nogizaka46, members are not allowed to wear nail art and gel nails during certain occasions, such as while in the group uniform.
- In SNH48 Group, members are not allowed to stream through third party applications other than Pocket48.
List of Members who were punished for violating rules
Some members have been fired or sanctioned due to breaking group rules. Note that some of these cases are only suppositions. Some former members report they chose to leave the group willingly in the aftermath of breaking rules, while others have been formally dismissed.
- Dismissed: When the management requires the member to leave the group.
- Terminated: When management terminates the contract. Similar to dimiss.
- Suspended: The management decides to pause the member's activities for a certain time.
- Resigned: The member resigns from the group on her own without a graduation ceremony. Resignations are generally understood to be done willingly, with the member making the decision herself.
- Demoted: The member is downgraded from her status from official promoted member to kenkyuusei/trainee.
