Senbatsu (選抜, Selection) is a term used by AKB48, SKE48, SDN48, NMB48, HKT48, JKT48, SNH48 and Nogizaka46 to refer to the members selected to be featured in the A-side of a single. The term can be extended to refer to members selected for performances, events, and concerts as well.

Information

The term Senbatsu did not become commonly used until the 1st Senbatsu Election, but the process of choosing specific members to perform the A-side of single releases has been in practice since Skirt, Hirari. The largest Senbatsu so far is from Manatsu no Sounds Good and Labrador Retriever, with 36 members.

Senbatsu is almost always chosen by the management. In fact, when management chooses the Senbatsu members, it is often called a "Regular Senbatsu". However, for the sinlges Iiwake Maybe, Heavy Rotation, Flying Get, Gingham Check, Koi Suru Fortune Cookie and Kokoro no Placard, Senbatsu was chosen through the Senbatsu Sousenkyo. For the singles Chance no Junban, Ue Kara Mariko, Eien Pressure and Kimi no Hohoemi wo Yume ni Miru, Senbatsu was chosen through the Janken Tournament.

Senbatsu usually has 16 members, but recently it became common that the Senbatsu is expanded to include more girls.
