Introduction
Introduction
AKB48 had a total of 165 members during all their 13 generations. the first until the third generation is what we know as the original teams (1st Gen: Team A, 2nd Gen: Team K, 3rd Gen: Team B).
+
1st - 3rd Generation are known as the Original Teams (1st Gen: Team A, 2nd Gen: Team K, 3rd Gen: Team B).

Later on when more auditions were held, all the future successful candidates would take part of a in-training team of members that would work as sub and under for the official members in various actives (mostly the Theater Performances). And finally, when any of the official members would graduate a girl would be promoted to fill the space.

This group of girls was called AKB48 SEED. A term was was dropped later on and changed for Kenkyusei Members (<i>Research Students</i>). after more auditions and eventually more generations were created, the Kenkyuseis started to perform by themselves in the theater covering various old AKB48 Stages.

In 2009 a Team Kenkyusei <small>(Previously they were just "Kenkyusei(s)" and not part of any kind of team)</small> was created and different "auditions" were periodically made before a new Generation joined the group. All the current Kenkyuseis went through a selection phase where the manager decided which girls "truly wanted" to be an idol and were actually giving their best. Eventually, some girls were Demoted during each Kenkyusei Sellection to reduce the quantity of members (these girls were always given the chance to audition once again and start from zero. Thing that actually happened with some members, and some even made it to be part of the group once again.)
+
For all generations after, successful candidates became trainees who would substitute for official members in activities when a member was absent (most commonly in Theater Performances). When official members would graduate, a trainee was promoted to fill their place. This group of girls was first called AKB48 SEED. The term was later changed to Kenkyuusei (meaning "Research Students"). As more generations were created, Kenkyuusei began to perform by themselves in the theater and hold their own stage shows. In 2009, Team Kenkyuusei was created and the Kenkyuusei Selection was held for the first time. Kenkyuusei began to have more presence in the group, even being part of Senbatsu and appearing on TV shows.

Since then, the Team Kenkyusei are considered and acknowledged as another team of the group and currently even perform in the theater way more frequently than the "official" teams.
+
Besides regular auditions, AKB48 also participated in the AKB48 Group Draft Kaigi to recruit new members. They also held a special audition to recruit Team 8 members, and two auditions to recruit temporary members (Otona AKB48 and Baito AKB). Team 8, having one member from each prefecture, held auditions every time a member graduated to fill the prefecture representative spot. Starting in March 2012, AKB48 also had Kennin Members, who were members from sister groups that had a concurrent position in AKB48. However, as of the AKB48 Team Shuffle 2017, no sister group members hold Kennin positions in AKB48 any longer. From December 8, 2017 to April 30, 2023, all Team 8 members were Kennin members in in one of Team A, Team K, Team B, or Team 4. When Team 8 officially went on hiatus in April 2023, and all members of Team 8 became full members of Team A, Team K, Team B, or Team 4. When Team A, Team K, Team B, and Team 4 were disbanded on October 17, 2023, all promoted AKB48 members became part of Regular Members instead.

They also started to appear in the singles (even as Senbatsu) and also got their own tv show focused in them. denoting the importance they have even though they any of them have a real safe position in the group.
+
AKB48 has had a total of 341 original members over their 19 generations, 3 draft generations, Team 8 auditions, and special auditions. They have had an additional 4 transferred members, 16 Kennins, and 56 temporary members. Currently thirteen generations (1st to 9th, 11th, 12th, 14th and Draft 1st) do not have any remaining active members.

Some AKB48 Members actually auditioned more than once until being finally successful joining the group (like the current Team B captain, Kashiwagi Yuki). some even auditioned and were transfered to the spin-off groups (graduated Kenkyusei Deguchi Aki and previous Kenkyusei Nakanishi Yuka are now part of SKE48).
+
As of September 2024, AKB48 has 29 members and 13 Kenkyuusei.

As of March 2012, AKB48 has 57 Members and 33 Kenkyusei with members from the 10th to 13th generation.

Introduction

1st - 3rd Generation are known as the Original Teams (1st Gen: Team A, 2nd Gen: Team K, 3rd Gen: Team B).

As of September 2024, AKB48 has 29 members and 13 Kenkyuusei.
